Brains still a little fried? This may help...even though I'm not sure what to do with it.

I've read your reply to JRMWilliams. Now, I don't know what he sees or does not see, but I know what I see.

I see a 16 letter "word" that anagrams out to "What is my last name".

I see a picture whose title consists of 16 digits.

I see part of a checkerboard with 8 open squares split in half...leaving 16 triangles.

I see 16s....

I don't see, however, the connection between them all.

You see what he did not.

Some were looking at squares, but not seeing the triangles.

You get the next clue: left to right, top to bottom.

Ok...more fun correspondence. And by the way, is anyone alive in the chat rooms?

One more thing, define the word "anagram" and tell me how what I have given you is such a thing?

LAX

Anagram (n) - A word or phrase formed by reordering the letters of another word or phrase, such as satin to stain.

Or, more appropriately, ltwaimmesyhtansa to whatismylastname.

Re-shuffling the letters posed an interesting question. I have yet to learn your last name.

My instincts wants to shuffle the picture title...and place it in the triangles of the grid.

My brain doesn't follow...it's altogether too much shuffling.

I'm missing something.

-Fresh

P.S. There's a "vigenere" somewhere in "y'ore nights even", but I don't remember the rest of the page.

Anagram - A word or phrase formed by reordering the letters of another word or phrase, such as satin to stain.

anagrams (used with a sing. verb) A game in which players form words from a group of randomly picked letters.

"ltwaimmesyhtansa" would fall under the second definition (anagrams) but not under the true meaning of an anagram. "ltwaimmesyhtansa" is not a word and therefore is not an anagram.

My last name is Trevor, but that is not the name that you are looking for.

Follow your instincts... they usually point you in the right direction.

What have we got so far?

picture called 0009300019557000 (16 digits)
text: king me
text: ltwaimmesyhtansa (16 letters)
5x4 checkerboard (with 16 triangles)

Hint: "One word: Count"
Hint: "If black jumps over red, then Black would call "King Me". However, this "next move" has nothing to do with what you see in front of you.
Tell me what you see and I will tell you what you know. Tell me what you don't see, and I will tell you what you are missing. "
Hint: "Count what you see, but not what you are looking at. You see squares. I see something else."
Hint: "You see what he did not. Some were looking at squares, but not seeing the triangles. You get the next clue: left to right, top to bottom. "
Hint: "My last name is Trevor, but that is not the name that you are looking for. Follow your instincts... they usually point you in the right direction. "
Hint: "((8+3) x 2) - 3 + 7 - (23+7) x 2 +12 = w"
Hint: "w + 32 = y, what is y?"
Hint: "w + 31 = y, what is y?"

*note: some of these hints were posted in #acwe, from emails people got

Ok...a long correspondence...forgive me if its overkill...but it may become useful. The correspondence continues from the end of my last post. (There has to be a better way of doing this...)

Quote:

The distinction seems a little academic, but I do admit...I was wrong and you were right. Boy, I hate admitting stuff like that.

And, excuse me, I assumed Trevor was a middle name. Jack Trevor Story threw me off. (I've been doing some research on my own. You know, idle hands...)

I'll shuffle numbers, put them in, and wait for lightning to strike.

-Fresh

My point is this... if "ltwaimmesyhtansa" is not an anagram, as it is defined, then the solution, "what is my last name", must have been meant to be found another way.

Figure that out and you will be half way to solving this puzzle.

LAX

Ohhhhhhhhhh.

That's twice I was wrong and you were right. It's beginning to be a rough night.

I think I've got some work to do.

Freshness to Jack

I see the pattern. The numbers still confuse me a bit...but I see the pattern. Thank you for the help.

Quote:

You have amazed me beyond words.

Your next clue: ((8+3) x 2) - 3 + 7 - (23 + 7) x 2 +12 = w

What is "w"?

LAX

Quote:
Freshness to Jack

-22?

Quote:
Jack Trevor to me

This one is a little easier to do (NOTE TO SELF: I may have to make these puzzles harder).

w + 31 = y

What is y?

LAX

Quote:
Freshness to Jack

Hey...I've been havin a heck of a time with this one.

If we agree on w...y=9.

Freshness to Jack

Ahh...now we're working together...and we're comparing hints.

y = 9 if w + 31 = y,

but

y = 10 if w + 32 = y.

Can y be assigned two values? My algebra teacher would be very upset. Or she would say that the system of equations is unsolvable. Something like that.

-Fresh

Quote:
Jack Trevor to me

-22 + 32 = 9? Maybe my math is a little off, or that is not correct.

LAX

Quote:
Freshness to Jack

Gotcha..the other email I was sent read w + 31, not w + 32.

So, 10 it is.

There are a few more emails I refuse to post cuz it takes too long. Jack recognizes the error, re-states he meant 32, and says there are people watching him more closely...and thats why his emails are becoming shorter.

Whew.

0595310907 is the ISBN number for a book called "King Murray's Royal Tail: The True Story of An Easter Bunny"

so on to http://www.anothercontestworthentering.com/murray

I mailed this to LAX and got a reply stating that that page will be used to post those classified ads when he finds one.

EDIT: I figured out how to solve it the right way too..

Fill the triangles with the letters, starting with the leftmost column going top to bottom. Then the second column, etc.
Then read the text row by row. Top triangles first, bottom triangles second.
This will spell WHATISMYLASTNAME.
Then do the same with the number in the filename. It will read 0595310907000000. The 1st 10 digits looked like an ISBN to me..
Example attached.

Thanks for breaking down the solve for us Kender... I was beating my head against a brick wall a tad, but what did the "KING ME" part of the puzzle represent? Or did I miss something?

It is both a reference to checkers (where you say 'king me' when you reach the opponents side of the board apparantly) and the title of the book we found, "King Murray's Royal Tail"

Can we speculate that this means Northern US or Canada?

Hmmm...do we know where Jack Trevor is located out of?? I mean, if he's out of Michigan then he would probably mean Canada...but if he's from California, it's probably northern U.S.

I sent an emailing asking where Jack lived:

Quote:
I live in Owensboro, Kentucky. The ads were found by the few friends that I actually had in high school who have moved further north over the years. A couple of them live in the Toronto area, the others are spread around a little bit more.

Well, I live in the wrong part of Canada, but with any luck we have a few ARGonauts in the area that are playing this game.

I noticed that Whalewashing lives in Ontario, Canada. He's likely going to be our source.
