Found another still from the same scene. The guy in the gorilla suit is George Segal playing a guy named GORDON Hocheiser. Ruth GORDON plays his mother Louise.

One of the reasons posited by catherwood is correct. And if it wasn't an official rule it certainly was implied.

You'd think I'd have an easier time with a recognizable actor in the picture, but no. About the only thing I can come up with is Interstate 60 but I haven't been able to find any stills to confirm or deny it.
