Ah yes, I think you're right.
How convienient.

I know. We had speculated that Violet would die over the weekend, ignorantly forgetting about Cymbalisty.

I speculated that we wouldn't see the final installment, didn't specify how. It just seemed that delaying viewing it over the weekend and allowing someone in on the work would lead to something that prevented it.
Given the basis Violet and cymbalisty were working on:

He's taken that section of the manuscript back to the Museum now, and picked up the one we'll work on tomorrow.
Cymbalisty may well have had the final page in his possession, so we may never see it.
Need to know who else Violet told about there current work, but Jason has to be suspect number 1 for this assisted suicide. Or conceivably the experiment was so heinous he couldn't live with the implications?

Ohhh that's good. I hadn't even concidered that one. But really, could it possibly be that bad?

Ok well let's consider the situation.
We are nearing the end of the war, and Viehattle has just performed an Italian job on Perplex City.
You only do this if you are joining the winning side, hence Perplex is losing the war.
Given that this is the end of the war, and we are told Perplex won, whilst the other cities were destroyed. It sounds to me like this experiment has the hallmarks of a major turning point/cataclysm in the war, sort of like an H-Bomb on a larger scale.
So yes mass genocide is a possibility, and one that may be that bad.

Yeah, I know that, but really, would a guy kill himself over learning that?

Just had a thought. Anna Heath was recently spotted spending time with him, which Violet considered odd, especially when learning they are old friends.
Could Anna be a useful source to follow up on?
I just remembered thinking it was suspicious, the inclusion of that information.

Well, think about the stigma that surrounds The War as a whole. The last page may be a graphic account of aftermath or something of the like. Considering that it's the final page, then something fairly grave must have made Granier stop writing in it. It would be like repressing World War II then hearing about the devastation at Hiroshima or Nagasaki, and knowling it was very likely your ancestors who were responsible.
Of course, I don't think that's it at all; I think something well more sinister is afoot, along the lines of the other ideas already said. But, being unable to cope with the knowledge of a bloody past (and basically bearing the weight alone) could wreck a psyche well enough, I'm sure.

Good point on Anna.
As to whether that would lead someone to suicide. It has been known for people in some cultures to be unable to bear such knowledge.
In fiction you could point to the wheel of time, where a warrior people (the Aael) couldn't cope with being peace lovers. In earth history cultures such Japan are built on honour and dishonour where such actions are not uncommon. So not unheard of.
Its quite a heavy burden on a librarian. Knowing the info and that someone covered it up. Trying to decide if you should reveal it to the world, or hide it. Could you keep it from violet, should the world know?
How would you stop the world knowing in that instance? If you stay alive Violet will constantly be on at you. Disappearing would look suspicious, and could lead to a man hunt by those that are covering it up.
Given his need for ceretin he isn't the most stable of men, would he be able to keep his peace on the matter. Safest solution is to close off all loose ends, destroy the diary page, and yourself.
Although given that he is a librarian I suspect he didn't destroy the page, but probably hid it securely somewhere.
I am not saying that I believe this is the case, just that it is a possibility.

If he read it, it could have involved his family, legacy, someone he admires, anything. He could have read he comes from a line of baby killers.
But the obvious thing here is that the junior taking an interest was a spy and had him killed. Thats far more likely.

It seems unlikely, given the character of the rest of the diary, that he would have named lots of names at this point. More likely he revealed that the experiment, whatever it was, would wipe out all of the other cities indescriminatly, men women and children. It really does sound like a genocide in the making and you could imagine them doing it.
But what are they doing it with? I am guessing that the mine is where, or near where, the cube was found, or once rested. We know that the mine is full of cube shaped something (hence the children using cube-shaped pyramid pieces), could that be from the influence of the cube? Whatever the cube shaped stuff is it appears to be the basis of the experiment.
Maybe Cymballisty couldn't bear the thought that he and his people worshipped a weapon of mass destruction?

Given the timing, person and the sudden appearance of two very suspicious people that have latched onto our main contacts, I'm going with the murder theory.

Yup, I truly think he was murdered. To me it seems obvious, he was killed and it was made to look like suicide, and the final part of the journal will be missing. Since it has been stated in Violet's blog that he takes the piece they will work on tomorrow home, we are bound to find out in due course that the last page has vanished.
