[META] Still an ARG-related radio show- but w/ extra awesome

So I'm looking into applying for a weekly "specialty show" at my campus radio station next semester. This will be the first time I'll have the freedom to produce my own content, choose what goes on the air, and such.

When ARGTalk first started, I was really excited about the idea of, you know, a radio show about ARGs. The possibilities for such a show really are endless - recaps/summaries of games in progress, interviews with PMs & players, ARG-related humor, and of course the invaluable opportunity for indie PMs to trailhead. Of course, I'll fill in empty spaces in the two-hour block with the best music the Blaze has to offer.

Since we stream online, most everyone who's so inclined will be able to listen. And if I can find a decent streaming audio recorder for Windows (my girlfriend's OSX app isn't up to snuff... well, it's her computer, really) and learn that RSS/XML business then I can upload the entire show afterwards as a podcast!

I won't be able to know exactly what timeslot I'll get until early January, but I'm shooting for a weeknight (MST), hopefully Thursdays. Most importantly, if I want to get this show off the ground, I am required to do a pilot episode Thursday, December 8 from 8-10 PM MST - exactly a week from now, come to think of it.

I'll need a lot of help getting this off the ground, and I don't know how much community interest there will be in this. But I'm really excited about this idea and I hope you will all be too Smile

So, who's got suggestions, comments, criticisms and/or candy?

See my post here for new information on the retooled show.

I like the idea, and will offer any assistance needed, just call on me.

OSX is capable of generating a streaming program, given the right bandwidth at home.

dmax: To clarify, I was talking about her "Radio Recorder" streaming-audio, um, recorder thing. There's way too much breakdown (terrible wi-fi connection, cranky elderly iBook hardware) on the way to her machine to make it a reliable podcast producer, so to speak.

But I'm doing this as a real, bona-fide radio show - 1260 AM if you're within, like, two miles of campus. The studio has a rudimentary system that I can use to take & broadcast live phone calls, and plus being the world's first "real" ARG-related show lends our humble little station a little extra cachet, y'know? Wink

Well, as I mentioned in chat... I think it's a very cool idea. And while it may seem daunting to spend two hours every week talking about ARG while there's no 'big' game going on which would attract a large number of listeners, there's still a ton that could be discussed and there are always things to talk about that are ARG-like if not quite ARGs. And, the empty spaces could be filled with some simple musical puzzles... themes, first letters of songs, first letters of bands, etc etc etc.

Honestly, I can't say that I'd tune in every week, though I'd make an attempt to remember to do so if I was online. I can say that if it was a podcast that I'd definitely download it & listen!

beyond the ARG bit... congrats on getting & taking on the responsibility of your own show! That's very cool Smile

Thursday, December 8, 10-12 EST has been put into my handy dandy little calendar! can't wait to hear what you come up with! Could you link me/us to the station?

you've reminded me of my old puzzle community at TheStone.com -- in the early days, we did have a weekly radio hour (maybe it was two hours) webcast by one of the players. They did things like interviews with puzzle makers and players, and a weekly summary of which forum threads had the hottest discussion topics. There was also a weekly contest, usually something creative like poetry submissions rather than a puzzle to solve. The show had a call-in feature, so listeners could phone in questions, but mostly people sat in IRC and chatted about the radio content during the show. The show's host would also watch IRC and then relay to the listening audience what was being discussed. It was a very social time for the community.

If you think you'll have passive, uninformed listeners, then your show will have to be more informative reporting, with a news magazine format. Perhaps you could have an essay by a guest commentator, or a how-to segment. Lots of potential here!

If the poor little machine off which we currently run the bulk of the station's operations was fully capable of running CGI:IRC at the same time as our playlist program, I'd totally do the real-time IRC monitoring thing. That's an awesome idea... I guess I need a laptop.

And I doubt ARGers are a passive and uninformed group... but it's possible. Good thing I have lots of awesome music to play just in case Wink

Does this mean that Orson welles' "War of the world"-radioshow was actually the first ARG?

Short I admit but people running into the street.. sound like a ARG to me.

In some ways, yes. But I'd argue that there are a number of instances of such ARG-like things before War of the Worlds. There are lots of great examples throughout history and some of the best occur at the advent of new technologies. One of my favorite recent examples is the use of photographic tricks during the growth of photography. There was a decent exhibit at the Met that I was able to explore when in NY last month: The Perfect Medium: Photography and the Occult. Things like the Cottingley Fairies told a great story without saying a word. And, really, it was nothing more than just a simple play on reality as we know it mixed with our own fantastical desires. Not an ARG, but, in manyways, similar to what we do today Smile (and 20 years prior to War of the Worlds)

Heck, I bet that way back when we were nothing but fuzzy humans in caves, people were telling stories and playing in a similar fashion. It's our nature. We so want to believe in alternate realities... we always have.

(sorry for the threadjack there G3K... mods, please move to meta if this discussion continues)

edit: imbri - I edited the url for the Perfect Medium article a tiny bit since the boards didnt want to seem to render it correctly. It now takes you to the About page for the exhibit. There is a link from that page back to the main page for other information. - Rowan

I think that if you are available to call, you should. It would really show the station that there is a "need" for this type of show.

In fact, any time that there has been some sort of radio show in the past involving ARG's, I know that we have come out in droves and impressed the producers of those shows. This one should not be any different.

Just my $0.02.

P.S. The station says something about "Alternative" music. Why is there rap on the air?

At night, um... wel it's not "anything goes." But certain students who have the privileges of doing specialty shows do tend to specialize in ways that don't fit the format. Plus it's usually "alternative rap", at least on Tyler T's show.

I'm going to say no, if for nothing else because before and after commercial breaks he made announcements about it being a story... just because you have moronic people who only listen to a part of something before freaking out does not make it an alternate reality. That would be like me turning on the movie Independence Day at the wrong time and deciding the planet is being invaded.

The Allegory of the Cave was the first ARG, man.

Music in games

Ideas:

1. Current game overview. Not every game, maybe just a look at one or two games being played.

2. Interviews with PMs - I think they will love to do this. I would include grassroot PMs, or even start with them first. When I planned ARGFest, I found that PMs were more than willing to support us and talk about their game in particular and games in general.

I would really love to hear Steve Peters be interviewed about his life in ARGs. And how he went from player -> community leader ->grassroots PM -> working for 4orty2wo.

3. Music used in games. PPC even has a band that has produced a CD. Audio is important in many games. In LCP the music used was excellent to help set the stage for the different time periods.

4. Contests - everyone loves to get swag. You may be able to pick up some donations of things to give away in a contest.
