EMAIL from Phyllis Caves?

Quote:

My Dear Dr. Amaal,

Thank you so much for showing concern for me as I am buffeted by these
repeated
assaults upon my person and property. I am feeling quite isolated and
despondent. You, and a couple of other email correspondents, feel like the
only
friends I have left in the world. Your reference to the plundered treasures
in
the story's Hollow Needle seems quite apt. But, in my case, it is the very
jewels of my inventory that have been stolen.

These caves you mention... I don't know about them. Are you suggesting the
thieves could be hiding their plunder in them? Are you suggesting that I go
off
like a youthful Isidore in seach of them? Oh, I am not young or brilliant
or
courageous like Isidore. But, a part of me is roused by this idea. I have
been
the victim of so many attacks upon my sanity in recent months that I almost
begin to feel reckless, like I could throw myself into such an adventure. I
will see what I can learn about these local caves and seek your advice on
how
to proceed.

Sincerely,
Phyllis

That's pretty curious. I was just rambling.

Isidore

Well, here is a little info about Isidore. After much trial and error, it turns out Phyllis is talking about Isidore of Seville. And he did live in caves at some point in his life.

I did a search using the terms: Isidore of Seville, caves:

Here is one.

Here is another one. Gives a history on Isidore and it seems he wrote quite a few books. Here is an excerpt of part of that page. Might help us with Dale/Wes plot.
The "De natura rerum" a manual of elementary physics, was composed at the request of King Sisebut, to whom it is dedicated. It treats of astronomy, geography, and miscellanea. It is one of Isidore's best known books and enjoyed a wide popularity during the Middle Ages. The authenticity of "De ordine creaturarum" has been questioned by some critics, though apparently without good reason. Arevalo unhesitatingly attributes it to Isidore. It deals with various spiritual and physical questions, such as the Trinity, the consequences of sin, eternity, the ocean, the heavens, and the celestial bodies.

I have only been able to find his books online in Latin, so I won't mention them here. Who is our Latin scholar?

Wonder why Phyllis mentioned him Question Hopefully this will help someone out.

INFO Isidore

I'm afraid she's talking about Isidore Beautrelet, the hero
of l'Aiguille Creuse (The Hollow Needle), mentioned in my
note to her.

I didn't really expect her to respond so enthusiastically to my remark about the caves.
And I'm not sure they even exist in this reality now that AGP
is a cemetery.

Email Hollow Needle Penrose

Quote:

I regret that my life has not settled down since our last email exchange.
You
may have read my private email to another that was published on the town's
site
by that vindictive young webmaster. I have been the object of such ridicule
that I dared not leave my house!

I did have Douglas ask about any local caves and there don't seem to be
any.
Just as well, I suppose, because I was being silly to think about searching
for
lost treasures. Just imagine the hilarity that idea would arouse among the
local gossips?!

I continue to be afflicted by misfortune. My insurance company will not
honor
my claim for the stolen manuscript page because the appraisal process
wasn't
completed. I find myself in the unfortunate position of requiring the
assistance of Mr. Penrose of all people. Can you imagine?! It's almost too,
too
ironic! I am going to have to approach the man most likely to have arranged
for
the theft of the page and who is, most probably, currently in possession of
it,
to see if he will fill out the forms for my insurance! Another one of my
correspondants has graciously offered to approach him for me so I live in
hope
that I will be spared yet another humiliation. All of this has been too
much
and as I find myself retreating from the whispers and snickers of the
locals it
is a comfort to have communication with a gentleman like yourself.

Sincerely,
Phyllis

Given that we're quite aware of Mr. Penrose, I don't see
anything here.
