Mail from SAM

here is an email i received from sam tonight

Pam:

Here's what was in the envelope that Wes left for me at his shop. It
took me a
while to transcribe the note because of Wes' funky handwriting, but
I've typed
it out below for you. I've also attached the second page from the
envelope Wes
mentioned that is supposed to give me the combination to his safe, but
I'll be
damned if I can make heads or tails out of it. Please, any help you can
give me
would be appreciated.

Still no word from Dale. I'm starting to lose patience with the guides.

Sam

Note from Wes to Sam

I'm writing this quick note hoping you'll find it in case things go as
I fear
they might tonight. You see, I have strong reasons to believe that I
may not be
returning from my trip to Dale's house to meet the guides tonight. I
didn't
want to worry you with this before everything happened. I apologize for
not
being completely honest with you after all we have been through, but I
didn't
think you would go along with what I have in mind for this evening.
Have faith;
despite my misgivings about the guides, I think they are sincere in
helping us
get Dale back tonight. For now at least, I think we share common goals.
The
dead eyes are another matter. Avoid them at all costs. I found
something, a
reference to what may be them in a somewhat obscure book. If we get
through
tonight, I'll fill you in, because I'm out of time now.

Here's the real reason for this message. When you couldn't find me the
last
couple of days, it was because I was off tracking down that damned
disc. That's
the "business" I was attending to. I don't know how to explain it, but
I have
been dreaming of the damned thing every night since I sold it. I swear,
it's as
if it's haunting me. And you know Dale thinks it's important somehow,
too. So I
decided to try and find it. What I found, though, I certainly didn't
expect.

The man who bought it from me weeks ago was a first time shopper in my
store,
who had been attracted by all the attention we had been getting lately.
When he
saw the disc, it was like he had to have it. He offered me quite a bit
of money
for it. As you know, I sold it to him. I tracked him down a few days
ago (from
the credit card he used) to a fairly nice home on Long Island. I
introduced
myself to the woman who answered the door. She turned out to be his
wife.

Now get this... When I told her who I was and what I wanted, she broke
down
crying, sobbing hysterically. Eventually she calmed down enough to talk
to me.
To make a long story short, she claims her husband began acting very
strange
after returning home with the disc. He was literally obsessed with it
and
trying to figure out the markings on it. At some point, he disappeared
for
about a week without a word of explanation to her. He came back in the
middle
of the night, just over a week ago or so. His clothes were dirty and
torn and
he was acting crazy. After waking her and half the neighborhood,
screaming at
the top of his lungs, "It's gone. They'll never find it," he cut his
own throat
right in front of her on his front lawn. He's dead.

Before I left, she gave me a small notebook that she said she found
tucked in
the seat of the car her husband was driving when he disappeared. She
said the
police must have overlooked it, and since she didn't want to "bother"
the
police, she didn't do anything with it until I showed up. She asked me
if I
would give it to them for her. Yeah, right.

I didn't have time to look closely at it, but locked it in my safe at
the
store. I'm afraid that my employee, Patti, or someone else might read
this note
though, so I've attached something to give you the combination you need
to get
in. You know me and my codes. By now you should be able to figure out
this kind
of thing. I've got some pretty valuable items in the safe, so be sure
to lock
it up.

Good luck.
Wes

There was also a picture attached to the email...see kona's msg below for picture.

Here is the picture, yes it was titled combo.jpg.

Chat spec:
1) pencil sketch of Rodin's (or someone elses) Thinker. Is that 1 finger raised to the eyebrow? But then again, in all the statues, the hand is a fist, and would that be a 0?
2) a doily - 29 petals pare down to 11 and finally to 2 (per maggiemae's knowledge of numerology)
3) the Sarah Wyatt statue of Digitalis. He has a 6 fingered hand.
4) an open hand with 5 fingers.

0 or 1, 2, 6, 5 ????

Here's the curerent spec from chat:

1st image: Rodin's "The Thinker" - solitary man = 1

2nd image: doily with 29 points - 29 = 11 = 2 (per maggiemae)

3rd image: statue of digitalis (note the foxglove) = 6 (fingers)

4th image: hand = 5 (fingers)

Thus 1-2-6-5

Message sent to Sam from kona - still awaiting response

Just out of curiosity....haven't had much time lately....why is the statue assumed to be Digitalis?

I went looking for it at the "Celebration of Local Artists" page...but it's gone. So is the spec that it was representational of Digitalis because it's no longer there (or am I forgetting where it was?)

Shouldn't this be in "puzzles"....esp. if we get it wrong the first time?.

Is the page where the "locals" art is found. The statue includes foxglove growing at the foot of the hooded figure. Hence, at it's unveiling, it was spec'd that this represents Digitalis. Which brings up the question: Did Sarah Wyatt also meet the fortune teller?

new email from sam re: COMBO

here's the latest email from sam:

Pam:
Still no word from the guides or anyone else about Dale or Wes. I'm
starting to
wonder exactly what they meant by "soon" in their last message.
I went by Wes' shop again today after making sure Patti would be there
to let
me in. Thank God she normally works nights and weekends for him. I
really
didn't know how to try and explain to her why I wanted to dig through
Wes' safe
so I went ahead and showed her the portion of his handwritten note to
me, where
it said that he had put the notebook in the safe for me. She obviously
recognized his handwriting and I tried to distract her from reading the
rest of
the message. She really didn't seem too concerned with it anyway and
said, "Hey, if Wes gave you the combination, he obviously doesn't care
if you
go in there" and pointed to the back room.
I tried to feel her out a little bit about the combination by saying,
"Well, he
actually gave me some numbers, but you know his writing, it was hard
for me to
tell if it was one long number, three numbers, or four numbers, you
know?" She
laughed and said, "Yeah, his handwriting really sucks. I don't know the
combo
but I'm pretty sure the safe is just one of those three number spin the
dial
type things."
I didn't have too much time in his office because I had to get to the
Municipal
Building but I did try a couple of the suggestions people sent me for
combinations to Wes' safe. It is a dial type safe with one dial that
goes from
0 to 100. Here's what I tried so far with no success:

29 - 6 - 5
2 - 96 - 5
2 - 9 - 65
29 - 11 - 5
2 - 91 - 15
12 - 6 - 5
1 - 26 - 5
32 - 6 - 5
3 - 26 - 5
3 - 2 - 65

Those were all from suggestions people sent. Luckily, I found a set of
keys in
Wes' office area that I pocketed quietly. I'm pretty sure one will be
his shop
door key so I don't have to rely on Patti to let me in or arouse her
suspicions
by coming back time and time again until I figure out this safe.
OK, I have to get some work done. It seems I screwed up the Library
Auction
date and now I have Mrs. Dobbs mad at me too. I think that officially
makes it
the entire town. Sad
I have to fix the date to show that the Auction starts tomorrow; the
Fund
Raisers are always on Sunday but I put up the wrong date. I guess I was
a
little distracted. I have some more details about the auction itself to
post
later today too.
Please let me know if you have any other ideas about the combination.
Sam

"Done"

Heather:
I finally got everything done here that I needed to, including fixing the auction error you alerted me to. I posted the new information about the
Auction tomorrow, and got the item listings ready to go too. You know, if that whole process doesn't go smoothly, I just might lose my job here. Oh well, there's no looking back now.
I'm going to stop by Wes' on the way home and try out a few more combination ideas people have sent to me today. I don't want to spend too much time there if I'm not making any progress though, because I've got this strange sense of urgency to get home. I can't explain it and I don't want to get my expectations up on something so potentially silly, but still, I just feel a need to get there as soon as possible.
If something doesn't happen with either Dale or Wes tonight, I say it's
time we start tracking down these damn guides!
Stay in touch.
Sam

EMAIL (Done) Combination

My version of the note from Sam had this toward the beginning:

I'm fairly certain it's a standard three number combination, but the four
pictures on Wes' note are really throwing me off.

Is this a nudge?

Heather:
I'm sorry, but I didn't get into Wes' place tonight to try more combinations
and look around. It was already dark when I got there because of the Auction stuff I had to get done, and when I did get there, I got another strange feeling and circled around the block once before stopping. I'm really glad I did, because I spotted one of those strange guys hiding in the shadows there, watching the place. The ones Wes named the "dead eyes". Part of me was tempted to drive right up on the lawn, point the headlights right at him, and get out and get my hands on him until he told me what the Hell is going on.
Don't worry though - the feeling didn't last long. Instead, I got out of there and headed home. I went back a couple of times during the night but he's been there each time. I've also been looking everywhere for Dale but so far nothing. I still can't help feeling like something's going to happen tonight though, so I'm going out one more time.
I know, about forty of you started typing up a "Be careful" e-mail for me right as you read those words. I promise, I will be careful.
Sam

Email from Sam 5/4/03

Finally made it home after a long day. This damn auction has been
nothing but problems, as Mrs. Dobbs, the Mayor and Phyllis Willingham were arguing over last minute details like how much to start this at and how much to sell that for. Oy! Not nearly as much fun as it sounds, and it sounds terrible! Still no luck at Wes' shop with his safe. I ran through a bunch of new combination ideas people sent me. Here's what I tried today:

0 29 65
1 29 65
02 96 5
12 96 5
0 2 65
1 2 65
0 26 5
10 6 5
5 60 1
1 29 56
65 29 1
10 29 14
40 29 56
20 29 56
40 29 65
20 29 65
8 29 65
88 29 65
1 29 11
7 29 11

That is in addition to the list from yesterday. I'm hoping that Dale
might be able to help us decipher this thing, since he's actually worked
with Wes on some crazy stuff like this before. Speaking of Dale, he's finally up and about and says he's not feeling to bad, all things considered. He is very upset though about Wes, as you can imagine, and swears we are going to do everything we can to find out what happened to him as soon as we possibly can. I know he's planning on trying to contact the guides tonight and see if they can shed any light on Wes' whereabouts and just to yell at them a little too. He's not happy with their apparent attitude of "sacrificing" Wes for him. Dale also told me to figure out how he can talk to everyone that's been helping him at one time, because he says there is a lot he needs to share with them. He seems more determined and focused than he's been in quite a while. I'm thinking an IM chat of some sort is going to work out the best and will try and set something up for tonight if possible, but by tomorrow night at the latest, since it's already after 8:00PM here. Dale mentioned that he might want to go poke around Wes' and try the safe himself and you can be sure I'm not letting him out of my sight to do it so I guess we'll be going together over there.

Speaking of Wes' place, one last thing I just remembered. I looked
around for anything that might fit the "obscure book" reference Wes made
about the dead eyes or "numbered ones." I couldn't find anything that
looked like a book he had been currently reading, but this after all his
office, not his home. There was one of those deskpad calendars on his
desk, recently switched over to May, but the only thing written on it was
the name, "DALE" and the words "CASTLE GREEN RD", which isn't an address I recognize from around here. I did manage to find the figurine
people had asked me about, the one made by Sarah Wyatt. It was on top of his filing cabinet. Someone had suggested looking at the bottom of it but there was nothing there. It was sitting on top of a small piece of paper
with this written on it however. "Mais si c'était vrai ?" I haven't had time to try and figure it out yet but I brought the paper with me to make sure I got it copied correctly.

OK I brought some food home for Dale so we're going to eat. It's good
to see him doing normal things again. He promises to speak to everyone
just as soon as he gets himself prepared and we get things set-up.
Thanks again for everything.
Sam

*************

I looked up the phrase: Mais si c'était vrai ?

It is French for: But if it were true

Did a search on Castle Green Rd. Only found this:

Type of Foxglove

Here's another kind of Foxglove plant. http://www.nothyme.com/seeds/flowerseeds.cfm

Foxglove Faerie Queen Apricot Seeds
Digitalis purpurea
This biennial will provides years of enjoyment once it starts reseeding in your garden. Foxglove was where the first heart drug digitalis originated. It is now considered poisonous so don't manufacture your own.

Letter to Sam

I sent this to Sam today.

Quote:
Sam,

Perhaps the obscure book you are looking for is a ledger or calendar? Both could relate to numbers, as in "the numbered ones". If you anagram Wes's notes (Castle Green Rd & Dale) they spell out "ledger calendar set". Considering you found the notes on his calendar, maybe it's the ledger you need? Castle Green Rd by itself anagrams to "red rectangles" also. I thought that was interesting. Hope it gives you some ideas.

Diandra

Maybe it'll pan out. Maybe not.

I'm with you on the alternate meaning of the "RD" entry. Thanks for working on the anagrams.
