[BOREDOM] Just a little riddle

This was based on a favorite riddle of mine from a puzzle book I have. I just added a bit of a twist to it. Hope you all enjoy it.

Creeps along without a sound,
Feet that clutch both stone and ground,
Symbol of the eminent league,
Poison tips on its colleague.

The answer to the riddle above corresponds to one of the numbers listed below. Which is the correct number, and why?

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

the answer is

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Ivy, unless i'm mistaken. ivy league is the symbol referance, it's a vine that grows very well on any surface, stone ground, trees, or even glass. the poison referance is either to the toxicity of holly berries (holly and the ivy) or to the poison ivy plant. which causes a nasty rash in a lot of people. the only thing i dont get is number refereance but i'll take a stab and say 3 because it's the number of leaves on the most common variety of ivy though some 5 lobed variant exist and others as well i think.

Well, in terms of the number...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
That would be 4, or in roman numerals. "IV"

Embarassed I think I highjacked the thread. Do you mind? The name is just to good to waist on just one riddle.

On the suspected answer: van Beethoven.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Music is not a part of this answer. The hint is real so ....no moonlight.

I'm so disapointed. No takers?
hint: The solution can be found in the three sets of 2 letters from the 3 clues.

Hmm. ok.... The clues should result in 2 letters each.
Clue 1: a particular
Clue 2: 27
Clue 3: fortissimo

The other ones are hints.
Hint 3: use refference and voila.
