I have to disagree with you there TL - I think

Best Movie:
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

is clearly the best movie and bast adaptation of a novel.

Does that mean you agree with me on everything else?

Oh yeah, I forgot--
Best Sports Moment
The ugliest bullride of the year, but the most memorable--the final ride of the PBR finals where Justin McBride hung on for dear life off to the side of Camo to win the World Championship.

Great movie! And konashark, the LOTR fan that he is (and who never read the Chronicles) also loved it.

Can't wait to see them do the rest of the series.

Best Cable Series:

HBO's Rome

Serenity
Batman Begins

As much as I loved Serenity, and as much as I enjoyed shelling out my hard-earned cash to see it six times (and in many cases, to pay for the people I dragged along), if I'm totally honest with myself, I have to admit that while it was an excellent chapter in the Firefly story, it basically played like a longer, very expensive episode of a TV show. I loved every minute, but there were films that were better as films.

I agree with you on Batman Begins, which apotheosized the comic book movie with sinewy elegance and real heart, but I'd also add King Kong, in which Naomi Watts' transcendant tragic love for a 25-ft. ape is rivaled only by Peter Jackson's exuberant love for both his source material and moviemaking itself. I never thought seeing a big gorilla slide around on a frozen pond could make me cry like a baby. As usual, Jackson has an extraordinary gift for smoothly juxtaposing epic, operatic grandeur and heartrending intimacy. King Kong isn't without its flaws, but somehow even a flawed Jackson picture operates on a completely different plane from even the best of the rest of what's out there.

I'd make it a three-way tie with Munich, which got under my skin like no film I've ever seen before. It's not a fun movie -- it's not even a remotely enjoyable movie -- but it's an almost perfectly constructed picture that isn't afraid to ask difficult questions or face up to difficult truths, without trying to wrap it all up and put a happy ending on it.

I see I'm going to be in the minority on J.R.R. Jackson's The Chronicles of Narnia, which I felt was a mediocre film that owed as much to Jackson's LOTR trilogy as it did to C.S. Lewis, and suffered from the inevitable comparison, as well as unintentionally pointing up the weaknesses in the book. The third time I saw it I got an uncontrollable attack of the giggles each time a scene was staged almost exactly like something in LOTR. I did think that the acting by the girl who played Lucy, and the actor who played Tumnus was excellent -- their meeting was the only scene that held any real magic for me. Also, I thought Tilda Swinton was magnificent as Jadis -- I was a bit miffed at Aslan for killing her, because I was really enjoying watching her toy with Peter. Rupert Everett's cameo was charming, and Liam Neeson is always good. However, all in all, I thought most of the acting was serviceable but not particularly inspired (a standout in the negative sense was the actor who voiced Maugrim -- excruciating), and the whole thing was wrapped up in a bargain bin score that already sounds dated.

Well, here we really differ. I thought Syriana was an excellent movie -- not the best movie of the year (I think picking three disqualifies me from picking any more) but one of the best. It oversimplifies a bit, and is overly schematic, but then again, that's probably the only way to make it possible to put it onscreen.

For Biggest Disappointment, I'd have to nominate Revenge of the Sith.

Phaedra, happy to make your minority double the size, Narnia was lacklustre (although I certainly agree about Mr Tumnus...James MacEvoy is fantastic, he's been in quite a few things recently on UK TV...Shameless being the crowning glory).

The BBC made several series of the Narnia books (All except The Last Battle if I remember) which went out on a Sunday afternoon when I was younger and they were truly excellent. It benefitted from the addition of cliff-hangers; the film was bland and slow-paced in comparison. Although inevitable comparisons with LOTR are made, to me it seems that Narnia was the inevitable cash-in on the back of LOTR's success, call me a terrible old cynic Wink

And very eloquently, I might add. Very thoughtful and well-written comments.

Can't say as I disagree with you on any particular point. I'm not a movie buff; this year I've seen more movies than any in the previous decade. Don't particularly enjoy the movie theater experience, so for me to see a movie more than once in the theater is significant. I saw Batman Begins and Serenity five time each. Haven't done that since Saving Private Ryan (13 times). To me a movie is about entertainment and I was excessively entertained by both flicks. I'm more than certain that 'as films' there were many, many movies better than Serenity. As a sci-fi movie, tho...you'd be hard-pressed to find a better, this year or any other year.

Yum. Lovely new word for me to look up. You're so correct.

You're smarter than me, tho. See, for me a movie has to make sense and for almost every livin' moment of that movie I was thinking to myself, "What Is Going On?" It was so convoluted. This is not the definition of a pleasurable movie going experience for me. Plus, the trailer made it seem to me that it was going to be a political thriller, which it most definitely was not. Shoulda known better. I didn't like Traffic, either.

Best TV series: Battlestar Galactica
Best Score: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Best Life Comedic Moment: "Testing" my subwoofer when the cat was laying right next to it.

Here's my own opinions..... of course. Whose else would they be?

BEST MOVIE(S):
Batman Begins was very very good. I don't really know what more needs to be said about it.
Brokeback Mountain had its flaws but so does every movie. I think the positive (especially superb acting from all four leads, especially Heath Ledger and that woman he's married to) makes this a very deserving film.

And, I'm sorry, I have to (have to) place King Kong as one of the most-hyped, most-disappointing movies of the year. I thought it was much too long, and Peter Jackson lost a lot of steam in what could have been a decent 2-hour movie. I'll admit to some personal bias - perhaps the story itself just didn't grip me. For a Godzilla-type giant-monster movie, I guess it was well-done, but the long (and consecutive) "struggle with giant monsters" scenes really ruined it for me.

Movie: Serenity was certainly my favorite movie of the year (it was the only one I personally paid to go see, not once but 3 times). I'm sure some of the other films I saw could be argued to be better films, but Serenity is the only one that got my hard earned cash.

Movie Comedy: 40 Year Old Virgin. I don't think I laughed so hard all year.

Movie Disappointment: Revenge of the Sith. Hated it. With A Passion. This coming from a girl who wrote her college essay on Star Wars. I just have two words to describe the creator: Nazi Crack

Television: I also have to second steve on Battlestar Galactica as being the best show. Utterly amazing. And it starts back up Friday (Jan 6th)!

Nonfiction Book: This goes along with my favorite movie: Finding Serenity (although admittedly I don't read a lot of nonfiction). Smart, funny, and had made me re-examine the series in some new light. I just finished it and now I'm going to go back and watch the DVDs again to see what other things I can pick up on that I had missed before. (Sadly, it seems that most of the fiction books I read this year were older - which just seems strange to me because I read a lot- so I can't really say what my favorite 2005 novel was. At least nothing on my bookshelf is jumping out at me.)

Best Sports Moment: I had a best sports moment, but now I am a bitter, angry, sad, dejected fan and that moment means nothing to me anymore. For all of you that know me, I'm sure you can guess what it was and why I no longer care. I will however take sympathy hugs if anyone wants to hand them out (not that I've been milking this for all it's worth).

Ro, you are a woman after my own heart. I'll suggest a 2005 piece of fiction for ya. Serenity--the novelization. R.A. Kieth DiCandido did a masterful job of capturing the language, the characters and the wit of the movie.

I'll give you a sympathy hug on principle. Maybe if I hung out in chat more, I'd know what you're referring to. I'll admit to be wildly curious now.

Heee!

Apotheosis = becoming divine. From Greek -- theos = deity, and apo-...erm...dunno...in Greek it usually means "away" or "away from," so...it must have another meaning...nevermind. *slinks under rock* [/etymology nerd]

Nah, just more obsessed with the Middle East. Smile

In unrelated news, gah, it says something about the quality of movie scores this year that I can't even come up with mental candidates for "best score."
