Out of interest, how often do sites like this have an IM contact? If you want to flog something like this you don't want that sort of contact as it's too direct for complainants (not that I'm suggesting it doesn't work, I'm far too virile to require this sort of assistance Very Happy ).

Out of interest, how often do people communicating with potential customers use "r" and "u" instead of "are" and "you"? Smile

So it's an ARG or a thirteen year-old with a stragely well-developed sense of parody.

The sense-of-parody (or Sop, as it's known clinically) normally develops after puberty has been firmly dealt with as acne can only be taken seriously and life is, afterall, so unfair.

Had a bit of a conversation with the good doctor just now, mostly talking out of my butt, had no idea where to go with it:

Quote:
(16:32:35) ThunderclapEight: hello
(16:32:46) drpherotone: hi there
(16:32:55) drpherotone: how can I help you?
(16:33:07) ThunderclapEight: i have a question about your pherotone system
(16:33:17) drpherotone: fire away...
(16:33:45) ThunderclapEight: i'm just curious, is it something any type of cell phone can handle? I'd imagine cell phone speakers aren't the most versatile in the world.
(16:33:57) drpherotone: true, that
(16:34:30) drpherotone: but if we're doing our jobs right, I think they will work in most phones...won't really know until we make them available to the public
(16:34:4Cool ThunderclapEight: true, the lab world and 'real world' are often different
(16:35:04) drpherotone: so so so true.
(16:35:30) drpherotone: I was blogging about my lab just yesterday, i should have made that point, it's an improtant one to make.
(16:36:47) ThunderclapEight: that's how i found you, from an ad to your site to your blog to your blogger profile to your IM name. I think its great that a startup like yours is so open and gets in direct and personal contact with the public so quickly.
(16:37:36) drpherotone: I used to call it open source science b4 the open source movement became so enraged with me
(16:37:42) ThunderclapEight: ha
(16:37:5Cool drpherotone: but I think it takes a lot of voices to sing an opera., you know...
(16:38:16) drpherotone: do you like opera/ I am an opera freak Razz
(16:38:29) drpherotone: and an orchid freak...I need to put that in my profile
(16:38:33) ThunderclapEight: can't say I've listened to it very much, but I'm not opposed to it or anything!
(16:39:05) drpherotone: just curious...just now listening to Mozart's cossi fan tutti, it's about swingers, sort of...
(16:39:17) drpherotone: I wish I knew what they were saying.
(16:39:37) ThunderclapEight: yeah, I can imagine
(16:39:59) ThunderclapEight: opera is probably a great background for science though - grand and calming at the same time
(16:40:07) drpherotone: I read the libretto though, and let me tell you, it is spicy
(16:41:03) ThunderclapEight: well hey, I should get back to work. Just one last question and I'll let you do the same - any idea of a release date for pherotones?
(16:42:11) drpherotone: very very soon...I can't be any more specific than that, but we are putting the ribbon on the deal...any time now, really...but these things are so tricky.
(16:42:29) ThunderclapEight: gotcha. Well I'll be keeping an eye out! Its an intriguing idea.
(16:42:57) drpherotone: keep in touch...bye now.
(16:43:01) ThunderclapEight: bye

Going by the 'specials' page, I'm guessing we'll find out where this is or isn't going on Feb 14th.

Whatever this was meant to be, I've read some industry/blog stuff that is guessing that the early exposure of the McK agency as the people behind it and the scandal about the false wiki entry may have made the sponsors rethink their strategy, and it might not be going to proceed as planned anyway...whatever that plan is/was going to be.

As a representative for 15 year old boys, I'd like to contest that statement.

my chat with the good doctor

Okay, I kind of like this little project. Smile Especially the encouragement to create compelling photos and videos of staged testimonial content... kind of Go Gamey, kind of HEXy.

My IM with the good doctor below. I wonder if we're supposed to figure something out based on the doctor's interests. I was struck by the dr's quick dropping of interests like clues in thunderclaps' conversation... same kind of thing repeated here. I mean, orchids? fiestaware?

Anyway, someone figure this out. I'm sure it has a solution. Smile

Quote:
avantgame: hello! are you there?
drpherotone: hi, I am, for a few mo
drpherotone: more minutes
avantgame: I find your research very intriguing! I'm wondering about the testimonials. Have you been receiving any exciting ones?
drpherotone: A lot, but before we can publish them, we have to track down all the senders and get their permission.
drpherotone: If people post them straight to the comments section of the blog, they can go out right away.
avantgame: I see! Will you be picking any favorites to reward, by any chance?
avantgame: perhaps if I hummed you a few bars from cossi fan tutti, you would be more attentive to my IMs Wink I hear you're a fan
drpherotone: sorry, I am soooo distracted...trying to update the blog, answer emails, talk on the phone and IM you.
drpherotone: I love Motzart.
drpherotone: Yes...
avantgame: I know! well, is there anything those of us who support your research can do to help, in the meantime?
drpherotone: And Orchids...and I also collect firestaware and depression glass
avantgame: Mozart, Orchids, firestaware and depression glass... very interesting combinating of interests
drpherotone: Just spread the word, and checking in like this just to let me know you are thinking warmly of me does wonders
drpherotone: fiestaware*
avantgame: ha! fiestaware, right
avantgame: Okay, I know that one
avantgame: very good then. talk to you soon, looking forward to more updates. ciao ~
drpherotone: more to come very soon, days, not weeks away now

more IMing, less dissertating

More... I realized having just been back from Denmark myself, perhaps I could engage the good doctor the background story a bit more... now someone please figure out what we are supposed to do with this here. The amount of blog adspace this campaign has bought is really staggering (they're everywhere I look -- kotaku, Reality Blurred, boingboing...) something's ticking behind this door I tell you... (I hope)

Quote:
avantgame: Hello Doctor! Not to bother you again, but after going through some of the older entries on your blog, I realize I forgot to ask you about your travels back to Denmark. I myself was just in Denmark last week. Where were you visiting?
drpherotone: Copenhagen, and I went to a massage symposium in Chritiania
avantgame: I was in Copenhagen and Christiania myself! Terrible thing about the new government action to haze it all for condo's.
drpherotone: I'm only surprised it has survived this long.
avantgame: We actually were on two separate flights to Copenhagen that were diverted to Stockholm, and then Malmo, due to the winter storms. I take it you got out in time to avoid all the snow!
avantgame: SAS lost all of our luggage and my husband and I had to wear the same clothes for 5 days straight. Sigh.
drpherotone: I was there in November...no travel problems.
drpherotone: Ugh...and the danes are usually so sharply dressed.
drpherotone: it's terrible to not have your best clothes with you.
avantgame: We were able to attend the royal christening, though. were you following that madness? As a Dane, I assume you still have some interest in the royal family. Smile
drpherotone: Well, actually that's a sore spot...
drpherotone: You see, I am amazingly wealthy...
drpherotone: and the lore in my family is that we are descended from Hamlet, who was, at one time the melancholy "King of the Danes."
drpherotone: We can't prove it though, and a lot of our money goes back to Viking times.
avantgame: Wow! That's so interesting. I can see why the royal family would be a sore spot then. Smile Ah, the Viking times. Good old times they were. I imagine, anyway. Well, it was our first trip to Denmark, and we quite enjoyed it, especially the cakes at La Glace. Speaking of my husband, I wonder. Do the pherotones work on people you are already in a relationship with, I wonder?
drpherotone: Oh, of course...we believe pherotones can be best enjoyed from within a warm, stable, safe, committed relationship.
drpherotone: You can also use pherotones on yourself, to put yourself in the mood to satisfy the desires of a demanding spouse.
avantgame: I'll be sure to let my husband know that, so he can be better able to meet my demands. Wink
drpherotone: Or Vice versa...sometimes they are just a good jump start...a short cut, if there isn't enough time for slow-coooking romance.
avantgame: Heh. Good advice, good advice. Okay, back to the grind of the workday. Nice to chat with you again.
drpherotone: Yes, anytime...thanks Wink

This is interesting indeed - I didn't realize they had an advertising blitz going on. I actually saw the website a few days before it hit here but thought it was just a joke.

Has anyone called the number in the whois? 919-700-3310

She spelled Mozart "Motzart." Drool Right after his birthday, too!

Maybe it was a clue?

Sounds (well, looks) like a phonetic misspelling to me.

I've tried calling the number several times, and I just get a fast busy signal.

919 is the proper area code for the region of North Carolina where the doctor is purported to be stationed, though.

Mozart, Orchids, Fiestaware, Depression Glass... hmmm... anyone good at that tribond game?

I just did, but all I got was an error(?) message: "Welcome to Sprint's Long Distance Services. 51 7 3 0"
