Barcode found in Pattern Recognition

I recently started reading Pattern Recogntionby William Gibson (great book). I was flipping through the pages today and I found a barcode stuck in the pages at page 200 at the beginning of the chapter entitled "Cyprus". It's a normal barcode, but on the back, there's a metallic circuit type thing. The number is 79797 97979. I'm kind of thinking that it's a tracking thing for the library I got it from, but wouldn't something like that be stuck on the inside cover instead of in the pages? As soon as I saw it, I kind of got suspicious. It's probably the paranoia talking, but I think that someone put it there for someone else to find.

That book has what I consider to be the most beautiful sentence in the English language. You'll know it when you get to it. Call your library and see if they put it there. That should ease your conscience.

Sort of Interesting

Spaceboy,

It sounds to me like one of those security tags that are used to make sure that people don't shoplift items from stores. You know how when you go through the entrance/exit of a store there will be a few suspicious looking column-like things nearby ... those are antennae that are designed to pick a signal when a little circuit/tag like the one you are describing passes between the columns without having been deactivated by a cashier when the item was purchased. Here's an image of such a tag that I found on a wholesaler's website that sells such things:

This particular tag is compatible with an anti-theft system called Checkpoint.

The interesting thing is the number on the barcode. Googling 79797 97979 gets you a hit that refers to other people who have found such a tag in other books. The particular set of books in which these tags have been found is an interesting grouping that makes me think of a certain project which has yet to start, and has made reference to Pattern Recognition previously Smile .

If you take the number to be the UPC, this apparently matches up with some VHS or DVD version of Inherit the Wind, a 1960 film about the Scopes trial about teaching evolution in schools, a topic that is once again topical.

EDIT: Looking up this number using http://www.upcdatabase.com/ (using the Advanced look up number without check digit option) suggests that this is a "Numerical code on fake UPC stickers -- actually anti-theft devices - Numbers don't match bars". So the number itself would seem to be meaningless, a random number selected by the folks who are manufacturing these RF tags. Thus any link to Inherit the Wind would seem to be pure chance. Furthermore, since they are used for theft prevention, it wouldn't be surprising to find a tag like this in a book (even in some libraries, that apparently are also using RFID for theft prevention).

The fun thing here is the interesting set of books that have been mentioned on the Net as having contained this particular tag. They seem to be somewhat thematically related (science, technology, conspiracies, etc.), although maybe this is just an indication that people who read these sorts of books and find such a tag tend to post about it on the internet ... and the person who buys a cookbook and finds one is less inclined to find it interesting.

Cheers,
xnbomb

EDIT: Found the image again

The tag I found looks exactly like the one in the picture above, apart from the numbers that is. I guess it means nothing unless the thing about the number showing up in a number of different books turns out to be some kind of conspiracy or something Rolling Eyes

You know I think you're exactly right, but a guy can dream, right?

When I worked at the library back in my college days I was the one who put these in books and magazines. Some had bar codes and some where just white. They came in a huge roll and all of them on the roll, if of the barcoded variety, had the same exact number underneath the bar code. The bar codes weren't scanned or anything. For books, we never put them on one of the pages. We'd either put them inside the cover or under the dust jacket. For magazines, we'd put one on the cover and then sneak a few inside on some pages to thwart those who thought they were smart when they ripped off the cover to try and steal the rest of the magazine. My guess is that Pattern Recognition is a book that is often swiped from your particular library so they put one inside for extra insurance.

Also could be that these are the types of books that are most often stolen. In the Indiana library I worked at Devil worshipping books were the big theft item. Rolling Eyes

Another thing those tags were good for.... sticking one inside your coworker's jacket pocket so when they try to leave for the night they set the alarms off.

Sticking them on people is without a doubt the best use possible for them. At the last bookstore I worked at that had a security system (other than me trying to look big and angry), not only was I a manager, with access to as many as needed, I was also the manager stationed closest to the exit, so in charge of security "situations". It was especially fun the evenings I was one of the two closing managers.

Those were the days Smile

I've heard of this before. Hold it up to the light. What's it say? It should have a watermark or something like that.
