Looking for games

I have only just found out about Perplex City. Looking at the main website the concept sounds intriguing, but the idea of joining mid-game and importing the (somewhat expensive) cards is not quite as appealing.
Is there a US alternative to Perplex City that features a variety of printed puzzles linked to a plot ? Any ideas?

Also I missed out on Majestic when it was released. Are there any other "single player" ARGs ? The game "Missing" comes to mind but the puzzles that I have seen were a little too artsy.

Just because a game is midway through should never stop a person from joining. There are usually a few established players around who are more than willing to tell a newcomer just what they have to do to get caught up on the story. As for the cards, they are not necessary to play the game. I believe you can see all of the available cards online (in low res form) so you won't be out any information. The only reason you would need to buy the cards is if you wanted to climb the ranks of the leader board. And not the cards are not exclusively sold in the UK. I believe there are a couple of places in the US that sell them as well.

The only "single" player ARG I am aware of is Jamie Kane, done by the BBC. One of the main points of ARGs is that they are collaborative, so you aren't going to find many games that are going to be easy enough for one person to solve, yet hard enough that people will feel challenged by it.

If you are just looking for puzzles to solve on your own, I would suggest any of the puzzle trails posted in Timewasters. Otherwise, I'm afraid you're going to be stuck with the more collaborative games. You can check out News & Rumors for games that might just be starting, ARGs with Potential for games that are growing and the What's Hot buttons at ARGN for games that are getting the most attention right now. You can also go through the archives to read a little more on those games to see if they are going to be right for you.

Thank you. This looks interesting, I'll give it a try.

I am very impressed by the effort put into Jamie Kane. While the tasks & puzzles are extremely simple and you only get to solve one per day, I am amazed by the high quality flash apps and the care taken to make the characters realistic. Lots of fun Smile

I checked out some of the TimeWasters and notpron is nice but other puzzle sites are just too far out there (an MD5 hash as URL?? give me a break).

I wonder how hard it would be to make ARGs in general keep track of a players progress (as in JK). This way newbies could start at the beginning and either solve puzzles on their own or ask advanced players for clues, while people with more time on their hands would be at the cutting edge (story-wise that is).

Maybe this could be achieved with a wiki backbone that keeps track of page revisions and pulls up a revision that matches the logged in player's database information.

In timewasters, some of the trails post spoilered sections from the advancing players as they solve one set and move to the next. It is up to the individuals playing to keep track of that. It isn't generally sometrhing the PM's keep track of unless they are present to answer questions or check in on the more difficult puzzles.

You are more than welcome to start a thread to help keep track of progress for any game you are playing.
