Ok, did my first round of conversion. I found spaces, various lowercase words, an exclamation point, and not an apostrophe but the symbol below a tilde on the keyboard, can't think of the name.

I'm going to do some more work with it, it looks like things may be out of order.

Some words I found:
sustain
complete
running
bridge
fence (Celebedhel found)

okie

So I'm REALLY bad at deciphering these binary lines. They seem blurry, I dunno maybe my eyes are bad. But we have a text recognition thing at work so I will run it through that.

Meanwhile, I looked in the LJ userinfo and tried to run some searches on the odder looking interests.

godspeed you! black emperor = a band
aldous huxley = author, wrote brave new world (utopia, biotechnology, eugenics, etc)
arthur miller = playwright, wrote death of a salesman
bark psychosis = band
bjork = singer
daniel keyes = author, wrote flowers for algernon
do make say think = band
dorothy parker = writer, poet
fyodor dostoevsky = russian writer, possible founder of existentialism
george bernard shaw = irish playwright, socialist
hellen keller = blind deaf girl
joseph conrad = polish author
matmos = band
mikhail bulgakov = russian novelist and playwright
mum = a band, i think
oscar wilde = playwright, novelist
radiohead = band
robert graves = author
shirley jackson = author, wrote The Lottery
sigur ros = band
slint = band
sonic youth = band
sylvia plath = poet, writer, notedly wrote about depression
the microphones = a band? links only found about microphones
theodore dreiser = author, naturalist
william faulkner = novelist, won nobel prize, followed proust
wire = ...? a band, given how this list runs? no clue.

Started looking though the interests on LJ, to see if anythign caught my eye...no dice. Mostly because the lists of people are so long. But even of stuff updated recently, nothing. Worth a shot. Anyways, I'm to bed!

marv1423: Good evening!
whatisthesilence: good evening to you too! who may i ask is this?
marv1423: I'm a friend of a few of the people that are trying to help you out.
whatisthesilence: i see! i have been receiving quite a few messages from strangers lately. trying to help me out, you say?
marv1423: That seems to be the goal.
whatisthesilence: well, that is good to hear! this is quite a bizarre turn of events. i'm not sure if i can handle it all on my own.
marv1423: That's what we're here for!
marv1423: Consider us your not-at-all-creepy internet problem fixers!
whatisthesilence: i do like the sound of that! do you know anything about...strange beeps?
whatisthesilence: you see, i purchased an answering machine today. i hooked it up, and while i was out job hunting someone must have phoned and left me a message. i'm not sure what to make of it. lots of static and beeps.
marv1423: If you can put the recording of the message online somewhere, we might be able to figure it out.
marv1423: There's a good chance the beeps might be morse code.
whatisthesilence: that would be odd, wouldn't it? well, i'm sure i could do that. i believe i have a microphone around here somewhere.
whatisthesilence: i can have it on my journal by tomorrow afternoon!
marv1423: That's good to hear.
marv1423: Now, I have to ask - what have you done to earn a stalker?
marv1423: Online dating?
marv1423: Hanging out on the "Creepy" side of town?
marv1423: Winking at strangers?
whatisthesilence: ha ha! no, none of that. i've actually been asking myself that exact question! i'm not much of a computer person, so this caught me by surprise. you and your friends are some of the first people i've chatted with. in the past, i've really only used the computer to stay in touch with my friend sandra and to send out resumes and such. this is all new to me.
whatisthesilence: and i don't see why i'd have any enemies.
marv1423: Surely, you can think of something.
marv1423: We all have enemies. It's just a matter of how many.
whatisthesilence: true enough. but honestly, for the life of me, i can't figure out why this particular individual has it in for me. i just logged on one day, the day i first downloaded this program, and he messaged me out of the blue! he started rambling on about fences and bridges and time and such. he also seemed to know quite a bit about me. it almost seems as if he knew me before i ever came on here.
marv1423: Well, if he knew your screen name right away, he's either hacked into your computer, or he has some way of watching you in your home.
marv1423: Any recent break ins? How about windows that someone far away could look through?
whatisthesilence: hmm no break ins, but i do live in an apartment with a large window. i suppose someone could do a little spying if they really wanted to. i couldn't tell you why, though. i'm not very interesting.
marv1423: According to your blog, you're reading a book about bees.
marv1423: Any particular reason why?
marv1423: ...do you love them?
marv1423: <3
marv1423: It is Valentine's Day. Don't be afraid to admit it if you do.
whatisthesilence: oh, not necessarily. i heard about the book from a book club i was in. i wouldn't say i love them...they scare me, to tell you the truth.
marv1423: Do you know anybody that makes honey for a living?
marv1423: Or perhaps someone by the name of Durga?
whatisthesilence: hmm. can't say i do!
marv1423: Ah. Ok.
marv1423: Just wondering.
marv1423: No reason.
marv1423: Well, at any rate, this person is stalking you for a reason.
marv1423: If you can figure out why, I'm willing to bet you'd also be able to figure out who it is.
whatisthesilence: i agree. hopefully this individual will step forward, or will slip up somewhere. everyone makes mistakes...leaves something behind...and i hope this person does too!
marv1423: Hey, would you mind if I ask you a personal question?
whatisthesilence: not at all! shoot.
marv1423: Do you ever feel compelled to run out and answer payphones?
whatisthesilence: payphones? well, i have my own. i don't quite see the point. why do you ask?
marv1423: Oh, no reason.
marv1423: Just wondering.
marv1423: When did this stalker start harassing you?
whatisthesilence: oh, about a month and a half ago. it started the day after i lost my job. not the most pleasant thing to wake up to.
marv1423: What was your previous job?
marv1423: Med school, maybe?
marv1423: Perhaps you know a fellow named Kamal?
whatisthesilence: no, no. i was a writer for a local zine. not the best paying job around, but it was enjoyable.
whatisthesilence: and i'm sorry, but that name does not ring any bells.
marv1423: Ah. Okay.
marv1423: Just wondering.
marv1423: Would you happen to still have any of the articles you wrote?
whatisthesilence: oh, i have the entire back catalogue in a box somewhere.
whatisthesilence: why do you ask? would you like to read some of my writing?
marv1423: Sure!
marv1423: That might be helpful.
whatisthesilence: i suppose it might. i could dig that box up and scan something sometime in the future if you'd like. i wrote quite a bit for them.
marv1423: What was the zine about?
marv1423: Any specific topics?
whatisthesilence: oh, a wide range of topics, mainly dealing with the bizarre. cryptozoology, UFOlogy, parapsychology...it was quite fun. i've never been a fan of time travel, though!
marv1423: ORLY?
marv1423: Time travel, you say?
marv1423: Do go on!
marv1423: Now, tell me, is it possible for a space ship from the future, to travel to the past, and crash land on Earth?
marv1423: And then, would it be possible for the beings on said space ship to promote an XBOX video game?
marv1423: Hell, for all we know, that might have already happened!
whatisthesilence: well, that sounds like a load of nonsense! like i said, i'm not a big fan of time travel! you're starting to sound like my stalker friend.
marv1423: Oh...wouldn't it be creepy if I was him?
whatisthesilence: it most definitely would!
marv1423: I could be all like, "Sup, NE ladiez?!".
marv1423: And you'd be like, "Ewwwww! Go away!".
marv1423: And I'd be all like, "a/s/l?"
whatisthesilence: ha ha! and i'd say "i'm not 12." are you?
marv1423: Ooh. Good comeback.
marv1423: Is there any particular reason you don't like time travel?
whatisthesilence: not really, it just doesn't sound all that plausible to me. i guess i've always had a certain reluctance to swallow any of that rubbish. i suppose you could say i'm a bit of a scully when it comes to that area.
marv1423: In that case, Ms. Scully, I'm your Mulder!
marv1423: Smile
whatisthesilence: ha ha! well, the autoinfanticide angle is what fuelled my disbelief. i just don't see how it's possible.
marv1423: Hang on, I've got a good comeback for that.
marv1423: The truth is out there!
whatisthesilence: it surely is! but there's no truth in time travel, if you ask me.
marv1423: That's because you're not a BEEliever.
marv1423: C'mon. Surely, you covered government conspiracies in the zine.
whatisthesilence: plenty!
marv1423: For all we know, the government could be nearing perfection of a time machine to stop the robotic monkey war of 2020.
whatisthesilence: highly doubtful, my friend. highly doubtful.
marv1423: Were you fired from your last job, or did you quit?
whatisthesilence: i was fired. i wrote a rather nasty response to someone and, by the time it hit the press, i was already packing my things.
marv1423: There you go.
marv1423: Who was the response to?
marv1423: Naturally, that person might be very angry.
marv1423: What was it about?
whatisthesilence: some nut claiming he was from the future! a john teeter wannabe, i called him.
whatisthesilence: or was it john titor? i apologise.
marv1423: Really...
marv1423: Do you have any way of contacting him?
whatisthesilence: i suppose. i don't see why i should, though.
marv1423: If you give us a way to contact him, we might be able to see if he's related to all of this.
marv1423: Heck, we might even send him a series of sarcastic AIM messages for you.
whatisthesilence: that would be good for a laugh! well, i suppose i could dig up that article for you someday.
marv1423: That would be a big help.
whatisthesilence: right, right. well, i'll see what i can do!
marv1423: Hey, just what *is* the silence?
whatisthesilence: well, there are two silences that i know of. *my* silence and the one that our stalker goes on about all that time. which one are you wondering about?
whatisthesilence: because i have absolutely no idea if you're asking about the latter.
marv1423: In that case, tell me about the former.
whatisthesilence: well, while i was busy writing about all things bizarre i got caught up in bible prophecy. revelation 1:8 really interested me.
whatisthesilence: or 8:1. it's quite late.
whatisthesilence: "and when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour." pretty odd. it has always intrigued me.
marv1423: Very strange indeed.
marv1423: And the silence was never explained?
whatisthesilence: there has been interpretations, but i'm kind of sceptical. i just find it very curious.
marv1423: Hey...does Sandra have an LJ, or AIM name of any sort?
whatisthesilence: ah, yes. her screenname is sandywinston . she's a busy girl, though.
marv1423: Do you think she could have anything to do with what's going on?
whatisthesilence: ha, i don't think so. we've been friends for a very long time.
marv1423: Well, it's been fun chatting with you, but I should be getting to bed.
marv1423: Talk to you tomorrow?
whatisthesilence: alright, then. yes, of course! it was a pleasure chatting with you.
whatisthesilence: goodnight, then!
whatisthesilence: i'm going to head off to bed myself. i didn't realise how late it was. i'll try to get that answering machine message up on my journal later in the day.
whatisthesilence: night!
marv1423: Sounds like a plan! Adios!

I hope this helps! A long, informative chat. Although they denied any knowledge of my ilovebees references, I'm still not 100% convinced that this GAIM is not related to it. The time travel mention definitely got my attention.

I don't think this one has anything to do with Bees actually. The time paralells don't match up, one was one consciousness being shot back in time and split into two distinct characters. This one seems to be one person who has become unstuck in time -think Kurt Vonnegut. Plus the terminology is completely off for the Universe Bees took place in.

This definitely looks like it could be good, but I think you're barking up the wrong tree and may in fact discourage the team from continuing by making the Bees references as that is a HUGE build-up to have to live up to.

I really don't care one way or another if this is ilovebees related. But, when a game makes a reference like this, one can't help but wonder... Whoever is running this game brought this on themselves. I'm just following up on it. Razz

Anyways...our contact has posted the phone message he's been getting.

welp it's morse code....

i wrote it out in text form. i don't know how to decode morse, though. here it is for those of you that do...

Hey guys, I got called in by snic to take a look at the audio file.
First, notice that int eh last third of the file there is an extra layer of sound, buried pretty low. There is a human voice speaking. I cant make it out, and IM having a little trouble filtering it. Maybe I'll take another look.

Now, about this morse code.
I dont think its morse code. THeres not enough distinction to indicate word seperators and too many repeating sequences.

What we do have is 2 discrete signals that occur in spaced sets of 8.
Yep, binary code.
I dont know exactly what method you guys have been using to convert the binary codes youve found so far, but here are the two possible orientations of this message(assuming the above posters notation of teh sequences is correct. I did not double check his transcription against the audio file!):
01101101/01110101/01101101/01100001/01110100/01110011/01110000/
01100001/01100011/01100101/01100011/01101111/01101101
10010010/10001010/10010010/10011110/10001011/10001100/10001111/
10011110/10011100/10011010/10011100/10010000/10010010

I dumped the first one into a random "convert binary to english!" thingy and, tho it didnt get every set matched to a letter, it got as far as "mumatspacecom"

So, Im sure of this, but someone needs to decode that string properly.
Take care!

BTW, my hats off to the PM on this. Almost had me chasing morse code till the "Not quite words" and the "sets of 8" facts came together in my head. Clever!

edit: scrollie lines suck - rowan

^^^^fersher.

i figured it was morse, so i started trying to decode it using random morse to text converters which didn't work at all. none of them would would convert a single letter. i found it kind of odd that every sequence had 8ight beeps...but had no idea that was related to binary. i really don't know anything about binary...come to think of it....i really don't know a whole lot about any type of code.lol.but i wanna leeeeaaaarN!!

Well, 2 things. Looks like space.com is a valid domain, also it looks like the addy mumSPLATspace.com is not valid, so there has to be another meaning here. Maybe someone needs to ask William if this means anything next time they talk to him.

I can confirm the transcription of the binary sequences:

01101101/01110101/01101101/01100001/01110100/01110011/01110000 01100001/01100011/01100101/01100011/01101111/01101101 => 'mumatspacecom'

Reversing, inverting, etc. only produce gibberish as far as I can tell.

I like the style these PM's have. Put something in a puzzle that appears to be something we do all the time but make it something different.

Normall we would interpret mumatspacecom as mumSPLATspace.com

well, how about mum.atspace.com?

http://mum.atspace.com
Check it out.
Gonna have to do some sideways thinking on this game, methinks. If it looks like a familiar puzzle, try to find a new way to solve it.
