[UPDATE] the path of least time July 29, 2005

I don't have much time to talk today because I have a lot of boring admin work to finish before the weekend, but I had a couple of interesting emails recently that I want to reply to. Cassandra asked about whether I went on a '*date* date with the 'Crypto girl'. I wouldn't classify it as a *date* but in any case, I found it pretty funny that people think I'm going out with Violet. Where did you get that impression from? We're very good friends, but I suspect Violet would find this even funnier than I do Smile

Quadraxis asked me where I came up with the name for my blog. As you may know, it's a physics term that referring to the way in which light always takes the path of least time, and not as you might expect, the path of least distance. It's relevant to a lot of optics theory, and more importantly, I think it sounds cool.

Idle theory and path of least time

Actually, first I thought that the name was an adaptation of the principle of the "path of least resistance". It's good to know that Fermat's principle of least time explains the refraction of light, and one Principle of Least Action (the universe laws are opposed to any needless expenditure of energy).

More info available for the curious:

So why exactly is this post called "Violet and books"? What books?

My assumption:

Main idea of the first paragraph=Violet dating Kurt? No way.

Now "Books" is more subtle. Since the name for his blog came up from a physics principle, it is natural to assume that Physics knowledge is found in books.

Well that seems like a pretty random connection. He could just as well have called his post "Violet and smelly old Italian guy who mumbles crap from the front of the room".

When I first read the title "Violet and books", I thought, great! Finally something about the archived books that Violet talks about.
But noooo.
But, now, wait a minute... Kurt is a puzzle designer in a culture that's puzzlelicious. Could we be missing something here?
Hmm. It's worth a closer look.

Certainly, I agree. "Books" could mean anything, just the same as other titles in other in-game blogs. It also could have a hidden meaning, but we have no proof of that. I still think "Violet and Books" is just a title picked in a hurry, for Kurt had to continue with his "admin work".

So far, I have noticed that especific blogs have specific tasks. Scarlett's blog keeps an archive of media, events, and information only relevant to Scarlett, and also lots of info about Perplex City culture.

Kurt's blog appearance has indeed given lots more of interaction. He is in fact answering to the e-mail sender. Technicals issues and more stuff.

In Violet's blog we could actually get a puzzle because Violet facilitated us the encrypted file. Info about Perplex City lifestyle, too.

Kurt's blog appearance in the scene is relatively recent. I wouldn't expect any puzzle there yet, at least until more people find it. I assume that PMs are expecting to receive lots of e-mails in this site, when enough people find it out progressively, they'll give us something to solve. Anyway, there are many secrets to unlock, I just don't think we will find anything on Kurt's blog this early. And if we have to look for hidden clues there, we'll know the right time.
