Spam problems

There appears to be a recurring spam problem in the Perplex City General/Updates forum. I haven't noticed anything like this else where on Unficton, but from searching it only appears to be happening on this board.

Examples: Here, here, here and here.

I won't pretend to be an expert on forum security, but is there anything that can be done?

PxC is not the only place where these crop up. In fact, they regularly bump dormant threads in the Archives forums. Moderators usually delete them within 24 hours, and ban the IP address of the poster when appropriate. Discussions of the problem come in waves, but generally we don't want to inconvenience our many members in order to stop a few bots.

(repost from somewhere else)

Please stop commenting about the spam (within the thread where the spam occurred). This way, when the spammy post is deleted (as it is now) then there won't be one to five posts remaining that don't make sense.

In the future, if you see spam, let an admin know. Then, go about your business, please -- the spam post will be deleted within 24 hours of detection, usually.

I seem to remember some kind of system that could detect and auto-block most spam of the kind Enigmaster pointed out.

I can't remember if it was a PHPBB module or no, but I'd think it might be worth investigating.
