Maybe you should change your nick to Heracles?

Definitely the 13th labour of Chimera. Sad

I reckon Chimera's efforts knock that old Greek and his trials into a cocked hat

We're back finally.

It'll take a bit to clear through the backlog of stuff, but a couple of dozen clients are already back up and running.

This is the last time though - I'm fairly pig sick of the whole business to be honest.

You've done amazing things, and put so much effort into it - not only to get it going in the first place but to keep it running. With any luck it'll be done and dusted soon

I'm finding access to the new server has been very slow (lots of "this may take some time......" while waiting for server responses) Crying or Very sad

Also getting a high proportion of systems reporting:
"Starting Unit 0 1 of 0 at ..." followed by endless screen fulls of activity dots. Confused
When this happens, units.txt is always empty and proc.txt has lines 1, 3 and 4 set to 0 and line 2 set to a rapidly varying number.

This problem seems to be cured by stopping the client, editing proc.txt to the second line to a 0, saving the changes and restarting the client. However, this is a tedious and laborious (pun intended) process - I don't like having to nurse-maid all of my systems on a daily basis.

Is anyone else having problems, or is this restricted to my house (and office)?

Yeah - I'm having the same problem. It seems to take at least half an hour from ending one batch of 10 units to collecting the next 10. I thought it was just my computer being a bit weedy but obviously not Confused .

I don't think I've had the second problem you mentioned - but then I'm not very computer literate so I don't tend to watch it very closely.

I've experienced the same problems as Furry Mark. Fortunately for me I was able to just close the window and restart the client after the endless dot problem. It has been slow between work packets, maybe around 3 minutes, fortunately I haven't experienced the 30 minute delay Echidna has.

Please don't take this as a complaint chimera! I'm very grateful for your willingness to keep the server going even through all the headaches you've had with your ISP! I'm only providing this info in the hopes that it will be helpful to you for troubleshooting. Thanks for all your efforts!

*EDIT* it has been over 30 minutes since I got my last work unit on one of my computers...

Client problem can come back

I got back from a week away to find that most of my machines were suffering from the issue Furry Mark describes above. So I fixed the proc.txt file and they all got going again for a day or so. However this morning 3 of them have the same problem again. So this means that whatever is causing it is still happening. So keep an eye on your 13th Labour clients.

Cheers,
Mark

I had a horrible thought. How do we know the code that clearly labels positive results is working? ... By that i mean, Have we tested passing encrypted text to this code that would produce something readable and had it work?

I hate to think weve passed the answer because some small piece of code wasnt telling us when it found something.

Shocked I really hope not, that would be devastating, I'm sure it does work fine though *thinks positively*

 End of the line?

Hi Chimera,

I know you've had enough of this project, and I don't blame you for being sick of the whole business. However I wondered whether the current outage is something you are aware of? planning to fix? or whether we've reached the end of the road?

Cheers,
Mark

Hi Chimera,

I haven't been able to connect to the server for several days from all 3 computers I usually run the client on, but according to the mikesroom graphs there are still a steady number of work units being processed. Any idea what could be wrong? I don't think it's just me since marky1124 sounds like he's also having issues.

Thanks,
Jason

I've just got back to find that none of my systems have had work for (at least) a week. If some work units are still being processed it implies that the server is up. My guess is that the IP address changed again Embarassed

Chimera's probably got a lot on at the moment, and he's the centre-point, so gonna have to be patient for a bit...after all, what's another couple of weeks? Wink
