Does anyone know more than this? Who paraboloid13 is, how they can be contacted, how the answer was arrived at, and, just perhaps, what the answer is?

Big cheers!!!

Could it be someone whose surname is Pringle?

New update on We Love Puzzles from paraboloid13:

jack2: Re the pass key - it is indeed 8 characters.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

that will remain my secret

The only way to solve this was a forced attack - it took a while - but I have special resources at my disposal - that's all I will say on this matter!

I will drop more hints if they are needed.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

So far you have 5 keys that will unlock the mystery - order them wisely - What a steal

I know a certain 8-letter word that fits in with a lot of what has been said by the solver. Can an account still be activated for entering solves if I never had one during "prime time"?
(Can't check at the moment due to Websense limitations).
ETA: NM. Didn't know about the UID.

I believe, yes, you can still register new accounts. Because, according to mind candy, the game is still essentially playable. They just don't happen to be writing any new content, see.

Anybody know if the 'Cracking Machine' at www.kallisti.co.uk/pxc/ still works? You can type things in and get a failure message. I guess you'd have to know the key to find out whether it's really operational. Apparently there are at least 2 people who know it.

I would like to see the solution to this one. If anyone is willing to just post the key, or explain exactly how to derive it, that would be enough fun. I got some ideas from Paraboloid13's hints, but I don't want to devote another 2 or 3 years of my life to trial and error.

Not really sure but I think you need to brute force the key, as we tried all those years ago. I know what the answer to the card is (you can work it out from paraboloid13's clues), but that isn't the key to decoding what the text says, so think only paraboloid13 him/herself can tell us that at the moment, unless you can brute force it yourself!

That's distressing. I thought the hints would lead to a key. Must be getting old. How about a hint for the hints, or something about the nature of the answer - number, word, phrase, song lyrics??

As I understand it, and I may well be wrong, you couldn't really give any hints for the key. The key should just be a random collection of 8 letters, numbers and punctuation (e.g. 3rY,w7:X), and so it could only be found by trying every single combination of available characters one by one - a task that could take many years of brute force, and essentially how the card was supposed to be solved. Paraboloid13 must have managed do this with all the computing power available to him/her.

Presumably (speculating here), the key decodes the numbers to some text that poses a question.

As for the actual answer to the card,
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
it is one word
.
