Testing Update

OK - the latest on the testing situation.

First the good news. We have now tested over 4700 work units, and have 80+ clients registered. This work will continue apace over the next days and weeks.

Now the not so good news. The problems plaguing some Mac users have been identified, and are a little bit trickier than I'd hoped. While I am working on a final solution for them, certain clients will not be able to operate.

Later today or early tomorrow I will ship a new TestClient.exe, which will evaluate the suitability of the client installation, report that suitability to the main server, and if the client is found to be (currently) unsupported - block that client from operating. This is needed to:

A) Make sure that all Work Units are *really* being tested correctly; and
B) Let me know who to send a 'fixed' client to once everything is ready

Prior clients will be able to continue for 24 hours or so - but once the majority of people are changed over to the new clients I will disable access to all legacy ones. This way the vast majority can continue to contribute, without fear that the project is compromised.

Apologies to those, who for a short while at least will not be able to take part. Remember, this is a long term undertaking, and a week or so at the start will not make a difference in that long term.

Cheers

Mike

Hey, I'm glad to help out, chief. Anything to get this card cracked STAT!

By the way, should I post this news over at the Def Con fora, to see if I can get us some assistance on code optimization?

Jeez, I disappear for a couple of weeks and all this happens! Chimera - top stuff!
I offer the use of my PC for a client - will download the client as soon as it's available.
Not sure how the incentive part will work, but I offer an unopened Wave 3 pack if it helps.

Unfortunately the throttle settings don't seem to affect the speed at all, so I'm hoping the next version will fix this and allow the program to make better use of my CPU's power.

If you are running Linux or OS X and are a whiz with the command line, you might check out the "renice" command. It allows you to bump up/down the priority level of a process at the operating system level. Nearly all processes start out with a nice value of 0. Positive numbers make it more nice (i.e. it yields CPU to other processes when necessary, but sucks up the processor when idle.) Negative numbers make it eat more processor at the expense of other things.

For those of you willing to run the Test Client, the latest is available at:

http://www.e-wire.net.au/~eb_oakla/pxc/13labour.zip

The latest patch (for existing users) is:

http://www.e-wire.net.au/~eb_oakla/pxc/patch006.zip

When we move out of the 'Test' phase - which should not be too long now, updates will most likely also be available at:

http://www.13thlabour.tk

Many thanks to GuiN for his sterling efforts in setting that site up, and to all the testers who have worked their way through the various patches this week.

Fixed

Evening,

The new client works well.. I'm doing a work unit in +- 18 minutes. No more issues trying to end a unit, either. Thanks again for the work, and hopefully we'll see some results once we get this live.

Thanks,

Loric

I get the following error message upon installing this new patch.

Quote:
Error Validating Client, Exiting

I am running OS X (10.4). Any suggestions?

Thanks again for your hard work on this, chimera.

That means, unfortunately, that yours is one of the limited number of platforms which is unsupported at the moment.

I am currently working on a fix for that - and will let you know once an appropriate client is ready.

Sorry for your trouble thus far, but remember this is a long road, and your contribution will be just as valuable if it starts in a week as if it started today.

Hey, no problem. It just seemed like the 'path free' patch needed updating, but there's obviously much that I don't understand about the client.

Nice progress guys.

One thing I've noticed with the client is that on about 1 out of every 3 work units processed it takes between 5 and 10 minutes 'close' the work unit and get a new one (due to congestion). How much worse is that going to get as the number of clients grows?

Once we move out of testing I'll be changing the hosting of the Web Services to something with some more connections.

The box it is on at the moment is configured for this test, rather than production stage.

Website update

Updated it to include new pages and have been checking traffic. in 4 days 275 unique hits - so if we can get even half of these to participate thats a lot of CPU power.

anyone who can offer space for mirror dowload sites for the final client pm me. Once the client is uploaded to your space I will add the link.

Want to say a big thanks to the work that Chimera has put in.

Not sure if people realise (those not on the test client) that he has managed to get the time for a work unit (on my PC anyway) down from 20 minutes to about 16 minutes....thats 1/4 of the time knocked off, which could make a huge difference when you consider how many keys we have to test...

I have promise from my friend of two servers that I can mirror the file on....
