Also I just saw you guys use the phrase "TIAG" twice, but I haven't the faintest idea of what it means. Remeber, I am comepletely new to this.

TIAG = This Is A Game

Also, Chimera, am I right in thinking that if it does find a solution that is in understandable ASCII, it will pause everything else until you check it? I was going to leave the computer but am slightly worried that it will just say "Answer found!" and then disappear past the point it can scroll to.

It tells me, or rather the Web Server, the moment a potential candidate is found.

Guessing that we have not had any yet?

Crying or Very sad

as an aside, I have wanged my throttle up onto maximum, so that when i am not using my pc it can hog as much as it wants, but I have then set its priority in Task Manger to Low, which means that when other things run (such as my Virus scan....or my e-mail) it allows them to, but wacks straight back up to 98% after

Not sure this is good/bad idea.....thought I'd share though, also handy when browsing internet

I'm also happy to relate that since the webserver upgrade, I've had nae more problems with the congestion issues (I was one of the awkward buggers who was getting client-side problems pretty much most of the time)

I found a link that describes the mathimatics of the 13th Labour of Hercules:
http://www.math.tamu.edu/~boas/courses/math696/Maple-Hercules.html

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I know this is supposed to be discussed in the other thread, but I think this might be important. The Labour was a supposed "lost" challenge that is now known as "The Amphora of Zeus" or "Gabriel's Horn." Apparently it was impossible because the amphora had an infinite surface area (described on the site). Has anyone tried to imput INFINITE as the answer? I would myself but I don't have the card. It would fit as it is 8 letters long.

I know that a couple of people put a whole lot of effort into getting the distributed cracking program up and running, so I hate to ask about the possibility of them putting in more work, but has there been any concrete discussion about adding to 13labour.tk so that it displays the amount we've done so far, number of people involved, etc.? I feel there's a chance that this sort of info might act as encouragement to get people involved and continue being involved. of course, it might also just demoralize the hell out of everyone instead, so maybe its not worth doing. either way, just a thought.

I realize the point has been brought up before but I was thinking that maybe just decoding this through brute force is like the impossible tasks. There must be some alternate way to do this (like Hercules finding the volume instead of surface area). Also I saw no mention of anyone trying INFINITY as the key. As I stated before, it is 8 digits which seems to be the right amount.

I think that regular updates are a good thing - even if they can't be automated via the client, once a week or possibly more often would be reasonable. As long as the numbers keep getting smaller (or conversely larger, depending on which way you want to show it) then it's a good motivational tool.

Of course, the other way of looking at it is the fact that whilst it might take X hundred computers Y hundred days to go through all of the computations...it might turn out that we hit upon the right WU tomorrow. Or the day after. Or next week. Every time you process an unsuccessful work unit, the chances of the next one being the *right* one go up. Think about it that way.

I'd like to believe you are correct, NinjaPirate, that we can figure out the key without a brute force effort. Please try any keys you might think of at this site.

(If there's any question of the validity of this site's code, please let me know, as I still frequently test potential keys, like infinity and infinite, which aren't any good.)

Another pointer that we're on the right tack with bruteforcing is from MC's interview with the MTV website:
Quote:
[13th Labour] is a very complex piece of cryptography that we've calculated would take about 30,000 computers running in tandem several months to solve.

And just to let you all know, I'm now running the client and it's crunching data at the rate of one work unit every fourteen minutes, which isn't too shabby right? Even if it is using fully 50% of my CPU!

Just as an update, the latest Client patch (in final testing) displays the number of Active Users and Work Units solved thus far on startup.

Just a quick question... I'm running the client at the moment and I'm trying to figure out the best speed to get the most out of my computer...

Just wanted to check; if I put the speed up too high will it just run at the highest speed possible and slow everthing else down or will my computer explode and burn down my house...?

Matt

P.S I'd just like to say great work on this guys; you've done a really good job! I think the fact that mind candy has given you prizes to give to the eventual "winner" (or whatever you want to call the person who finds the key) shows that this is the right path to go down...
