ive just got dots. i know thats what i want but im still curious to how someone will know when they have the right answer. Do all the results just get sent to someone reviewing them and then the right one will have its client e-mail sent a notice or something? *appologises for asking so many questions* Rolling Eyes

I (or rather the Web Server) gets notified of any possible candidate strings, as does the client visually. We are expecting a number of false positives - so don't go mortgaging the house if you see 'Possible Key: ' on your screen.

These then get evaluated centrally - probably by me (depending on how many there are). If it turns out to be the answer, I'll notify the lucky finder by the email registered.

I'll also be posting the answer globally on Unfiction as soon as I have had the solve confirmed.

As for the Client Name - that can be what you want. In fact noone is validating your client email, so you could put mickey.mouseSPLATdisney.com for all I care. It would however be tricky to award you the prize for finding the solution if you did that.

All clients with the same email address are considered linked, so from 1_0_3 - you will see the number of units done by this client (machine), and those by all clients linked to the same email address.

Chimera,

Will you be letting the person who's machine cracks the cipher get "1st solve" on the PXC website too? I know there's the prizes and all, but "1st solve" is kinda nice.

Or, you can keep that one for yourself, I guess (since you did write this thing, right? Smile )

that's what i was trying to ask with my last post with the 'independantly checked' part. Embarassed

Is anyone else still trying out the webpage code checker with ideas that come to them? http://www.connected.ltd.uk/pxc/

So that's 0.68% done. Perhaps next time the client gets an update, could the top line also include the percentage done? It would be nice to see how much progress as a whole we are making Smile

Currently processing a unit approx every half an hour, but increasing the throttle in the config.txt file makes no difference whatsoever. Can anyone help, is there anyway i can make it go faster? I'm using a mac and running it through mono as previously advised....

Yeah, throttle doesn't change anything with mine either. I emailed someone about it (Whatever email address was on the site) but no reply.

I'm assuming this, actually. I think if it's a silver, it's likely to be a puzzle with multiple stages, no matter how tricky the first few may be.

Meanwhile, I'm running the client on three computers so far and just wanted to thank everybody who helped create it. Mostly Chimera, of course.

You need to reset your client. You can do this by refreshing your CLIENT.TXT and PROC.TXT from the original install.

Awesome client (very bovine). Will use all the spare cycles I can get my mitts on.

As an aside there's some stuff in the sun developer grid community http://sun.java.net/sungrid/ where you can get a 100 free CPU hours. Just a thought, but I wonder if anyone's tried some free juice from sun? On the other hand there are 772 clients running this morning (!!!), so maybe it's not necessary...

I signed up yesterday, and I'm currently trying to recruit extras. Do we have any projections for how long this is going to take with different numbers of people involved?

A while Smile

There are 14.7 million work units to do. At the moment we are doing about 15000 a day - say 0.1% with our 700 clients.

Assuming (on average) that the solution is found half way through, and that we get an average of double this number of clients (a workable target given current growth), that would bring us up to 30000 work units a day and 50% processed in approx 250 days - or 8 and a bit months.

9 months has always been my target.
