I have two computers and I've been reworking the computer I'm typing this on to allow me to start blasting away at it. I may not have the card but I'd gladly let you use my spare CPU on both. I let SETI@HOME use my computer for 3 years and when it started to screw with my computer, I deleted it. This is something I'd like to be a part of.

Part of me is tempted to load it onto the computers at my college. Take the file in on my thumb drive, transfer it to the school's computer and let it run. That's an extra 30 computers. Although I don't want to risk getting in trouble for it.

Live Journal

LJ - I would like to post a few simple puzzles to get peoples interests going - while not distracting us from our core objective - or even those new pesky silvers Smile - so if anyone would like to devise anything simple and fun then please feel free to PM me - I think this would be a good introduction to the community and the game to any new passers-by.

On another note - we must be doing something right as the site had nearly 500 hits over the last 24 hours Smile and based on the increase of active clients we are certainly cooking on gas - i reckon we did about 16000 unit yesterday - i may be wrong but we seem to have moved into the 150,000 mark and it was only yesterday we were celebrating the 1% barrier approaching.

Ive designed a one off tshirt for promotion and the winner - its only an iron on but its got the web site on - im gonna use it to as a marketing ploy too so fingers crossed (I owe jo^4 for the idea as she set the seed in my mind)

And finally thanks to everyone that has offered stuff - Ive had loads of offers of stuff and things are now arriving. The prize pot is looking nice - well quite sexy actually (how odd that a pile of puzzle cards, a poster and book can make you all tingly!!!)

It would certainly be a bit embarrassing to get to the end of the search and have to say 'sorry, guys, there was a small bug in the program...'

Memory problems with Mono on SLES 9 on IA64

Flynn wrote:
I've had none of these problems with memory - it sits at about 25Mb memory usage and doesn't budge, and I've had it running for days on end. I'm on Ubuntu so there could be a difference there, but also I've just checked what version of Mono I'm on, and it's a bit later than yours - I have 1.1.8.3.

Might be worth installing the latest version of Mono to see if that makes a difference.

Thanks for the info Flynn. I made a typo in my original post. I was running the latest version which is 1.1.15. The Mono website stops just short of offering 1.1.8.3 for download anymore. However your post inspired me to check the site more closely and I realised that 1.1.13.6 is the latest stable version so I switched to that and now the clients seem completely stable using 21MB of memory each. Much better.

Thanks for your help,
Cheers,
Mark

For people who want to see the pretty stats, we now have a graph and two status images (here and here). All three of these are updated every quarter of an hour.

Also, if you'd like the raw versions, both the current values and quarter-hourly values are online too. Use 'em how you wish! The columns go timestamp (for the second), followed by number of active clients and number of work units done.

Finally, it'd be cool to have some more designs for the status images (for avatars, web sites, etc). If you're feeling artistic let me know! Smile

Yeah, exactly.

I agree with you completely Juxta. (My apologies if my previous post implied they didn't deserve complete credit. Seriously, you guys have done an amazing job.)

5 simple steps:
1. visit www.13thlabour.tk
2. Click on download
3. Download full client (v. 1.02)
4. Run client
5. Repeat 4.

We're looking into ways to let the source code out, but we have to make sure that it doesn't make things harder. For example, if a forked version of the client has a bug in it somewhere, it'll corrupt our results. Of course there's nothing stopping people decompiling the code as it is, but we don't want lots of versions of the client floating around.

One option we're considering is sending a signature back with the client (which isn't in the source code) or something similar. That way people who want to peruse the source will be able to, but then we'll patch any changes back into the official client. Chimera's away for a few days, so we'll ask him on his return Smile

As Ollie said but with one addition - if you find it doesn't work, you may need to install the .NET framework. You can download that here.

it was mentioned above that when a possible is found the client displays this on screen, given that there is (for me at least) a limit to how far I can scroll back in my command window (and that the whole history would be lost in the event of power failure), I was wondering: Does it write this to a local log file too?

Also, is the name and email address the cleint installation is associated with stored locally anywhere? It was shown on first login, but I'm not 100% certain I remeber what I put in.

Correct, you should see a little progress bar. You need to stay connected to the internet for it to run.

It is quite slow. You can change the speed by editing the file as directed in the readme, but it still isn't fast. I'm running it on a 1.8ghz mac under the mono framework flat out, and I'm taking about 30 mins to do one Work Unit. Don't forget, it is processing 14.7million combinations.
