Bear in mind, there's no way of knowing if it's the correct key until we try the answer at the PXC site. If memory serves, the client will say something like "possible match", and send it to chimera. There will be lots of false positives that will need to be gone through to find text that is legible, and then any likely candidates will need to be tried.

So no, it won't say "woooo, you found the answer" - it can't know if it's right or not. It will let you know if it's found a possible though.

EDIT: Somehow the program just manages to use >100% of my CPU, I think that may have been a bad reading. I also managed to do a WU in 4 minutes!!! Should I be worried by that (I have a 2ghz pentium-m processor).

If this was just after you restarted the client, then no. If you stop a client before it has finished, and then restart, it will look like it has done it much quicker.

Ahhhhhh, so it completes the last WU before starting the next.

I wondered if it was something like that but had seen no mention of it so guessed it couldn't be.

I'm running the client on my 1.5Ghz Centrino flaptop.
It does a WU in about 17 min.
The processor runs at about 97%.

The cooling fan for the processor is on permenantly.
My leg is getting extremely warm. (It vents hot air through the bottom of the case)
Should I be worried?
Where can I buy some asbestos trousers?

Speaking about leaving computers on all the time (which I normally don't), does anyone know a rough way of calculating energy consumption?
I have an Athlon 64 3200+ running off a 480W power supply. My wife was wondering how much this was gonna cost us in electricity, so I got to thinking how much it will cost to solve this puzzle. Anyone have any guestimates?

The power supply rating is irrelavent, the computer will only use the what it needs, if it needs 300w it'll use 300w, if it needs 400w it'll use 400w (up to 480w).

I don't know power usages of CPUs (or the rest of the machine) so can't help but a couple of recomendations, turn off the monitor when not in use, turn or other things (speakers, printers, etc.) when not in use.

Of course if the code translates as "WOOO you found the answer" I think we can assume it may be possibly correct Very Happy

Quite possibly! All the other answer so far have been fairly obvious once they were solved. Of course that could be partly due to hindsight being 20/20... Very Happy

I have a copy of it.

Perhaps the attack website could have a feed where peeps could put in there names if they have the card along with mail addresses, then the website could send out a list of 3 possible answers to all the mail addresses on that list, who could then update when it is wrong, until the day somebody gets to the promised land of a correct answer page.

We'll know when we have the right answer, there's no need for that.

If it receives a result where all the characters are within a certain range of ascii (i.e. alphanumeric characters) then he gets a message and the text comes up. He then looks at it, if it looks likely, he'll try it, or send it to someone else to try (probably guin as he's done all the sitework). If it works, it gets posted here, if it doesn't, we carack on!

So it must be unlikely that it will generate a large number of possibles to try in any given 24 hour period then.......
