Another trick that has worked for me when I get a bonafide error when I try to run it (this usually happens right after updating) is to download the "full download" instead of the patch, and copy and paste everything new except my pre-existing client.txt and units.txt.

Got it yesterday. I've been running it on two computers and have a copy on my thumb drive so that I can run it on any of the computers at the school, if I have a few minutes.

Watch out ... depending on your school, this could get you in trouble if you run something on the systems that they don't want running.

From my personal perspective, you should only run the client on any system:
A) you personally do own, or
B) have the explicit permission of the owner to run it (this would include a computer that belongs to your parents).

While I trust chimera245 and company to have written stable software, you do not know what interaction between the client and some other piece of software will do to that system. If it's your system that breaks, well, you made that choice. If it's someone else's system, they didn't get to say "I don't want to run that" and it puts everyone in a bad situation.

Potentially chimera245 could be liable because I do not recall signing a EULA that said that the designers cannot be held liable. Designers: you REALLY want to put one together ASAP Exclamation Exclamation At the very least, a disclaimer or pop-up that says you are not liable for any problems with your system would be a good idea.

FWIW, if it did cause a problem on one of my systems, I wouldn't sue but that's just me.

You're looking for nothing really, just leave it running and if you're lucky and find it one of the people running it will email you Wink

Just to emphasize what e_nygma said, from the FAQ page:

Quote:
Q. Can I run this at work/school/college?

A. Technically you can. However, make sure you get permission from the Network Admin first, and if they say no then don't install it. We want to get this card solved, and the client is safe, but you will get into trouble installing it on a machine you don't own without permission. Perhaps ask them to visit the site and email the team if they have any further questions

PLEASE - if it's not your machine, get permission first.

Good point. However, the only place I have run it is on a virtual machine in my networking class. I actually asked the professor about it and he said that since the virtual computer is just a shell and disconnected from the real computer, it doesn't hurt to run. I haven't run it on the library computer or anywhere else. However, I guess I could install a virtual computer on my own computer and then run it on that too. Oo, two or three virtual computers running it in parallel... I could have 4 computers running it with only 2 computers in real life punching away. Interesting.

Hi,

I'm having trouble with the new client. The previous versions have all worked fine but this one does not seem to connect. I get,

Congestion encountered adding client, waiting for retry
.Retrying Now
.............

Then just more dots.

I have tried installing to different folders and checking that the firewall is accepting traffic from 13labour. I've also reinstalled the .net 1.1.

Any help appreciated.

TaRa

EDIT: I should say that this was a complete install not the patch. Thanks Sackospuds.

I got the same error (stupidly) trying to run the new client with the old config file.. (what happens when you don't read directions..) if you're using a totally new install it shouldn't effect it though..

also, have we figured out what this means?

Application has generated an exception that could not be handled
Process id=0xfffd24c1 (-187199) Thread id=0xfff51e65 (-713115)

after which I had to close the program.. (it was working on unit 896158023) this is the second time it's happened (first time was mid unit as well)

There apears to have been an update somewhere as I've just noticed a 50 WU unit on my system, I'm just making sure that this is right and other people have been receiving them as well (it says x of 50 now not x of 30).

I've been getting the "exception that could not be handled" thing as well, on both my computers. It's a pain when it happens, so any suggested solutions appreciated.

I've found this happens whenever my computer crashes in the middle of processing a WU.... what I did was just re-download the client and re-install the files except client.txt and units.txt (I think proc.txt is the one that gets f-ed up sometimes) and it worked for me.

I saw that somewhere earlier in this thread, and tried it, and it still didn't solve the problem Confused

Maybe I did something wrong Dunce so I'll give it another go. Hopefully it'll work! I get upset when I think my pc has been merrily chugging away overnight, only to discover the message of doom staring at me when I switch the screen on.
