It wouldn't be hard to show the output. My question however is, would we really want to see it.

With (69^Cool possible outputs, it makes it pretty impossible to search through them manually to find one needle in the haystack. And let's be honest, it's one huuuuge haystack ;l)

I have noticed, on pictures of the card on ebay, that the "proper" wave 1 version of the card has the five cows in a "cartouche" instead of the way they are printed on the pre-release version of the card. Could this be a clue from MC that the five cows are much more important than we have been assuming? Remember how the Rosseta Stone was decrypted because of the recognition of names in cartouches.

The 13th Labour database will be going offline shortly for the next 4 or 5 hours for essential database maintenance.

During this time I will install most of the server side changes ready for Phase II of the assault.

Just a quick update I have had from Chimera245 and to keep you all informed.

1.4.0 has been initially tested and will be available for wider testing soon. He will be adding more Phase 1 work units into the mix over the weekend
(the ones featuring spaces) and will require us to adjust the stats a little. So keep them clients running Smile and watch this space.

New Work Units and Thank You

The new Work Units GuiN mentionned are going into the database as we speak.

This adds another 5,374,785 units to the mix.

I'll set the sequencer to run from the end downwards for a while, so the phase 1 clients can finish doing the last few units on the first pass.

As a bit more information, as GuiN has mentionned elsewhere we are adding an additional set of characters to the key space. The new characters are <space> , . ! ?

This means there are an additional 5,374,785 combinations of the first 4 characters of the key (we call these Work Units), and a similar number of additional combinations for the last 4 characters.

Phase 1 Clients can process any work unit (including these new work units), handling all combinations of A-Z, A-z and 0-9 for the last 4 characters of the key.

Phase 2 Clients can do the same, but additionally reprocess units for which the phase 1 examination has already been undertaken, checking the additional combinations only.

That's probably explained very badly, but suffice it to say we will (once Phase 2 is completed) have evaluated all the combinations of the new 67 character keyspace.

As an aside, I would like to thank GuiN, MJ, Mac_monkey and the others for their assistance in the marketting and communications side of this. That is the one key function that my temperament and abiliities do not allow me to partake in - and without which the whole exercise would have died months ago.

Also to the people undertaking the search - thank you for all those CPU hours. I think at times we have all had doubts that this would succeed - but with your ongoing commitment we will get this done - and this would be a major achievement - more than most of you imagine.

Anyway soap box mode off - enjoy your new work units

I think I may have got a couple of those new work units (2054437183 and 2054438719), but my 1.3.1 clients are printing far too many dots and taking far longer than usual to process them (about 3 hours now, and still not finished - normally, it only takes 5-10 minutes, and I'm pretty sure all the units I'm getting should be the same size as before).

All my clients have been doing the same for around the past 12 hours now...

edit: see http://www.perplexorum.com/showpost.php?p=2351&postcount=30

edit 2: after clearing client.txt two of my clients have already picked up more problem work units (2054304575 and 2054304063)

*walks in looking rather sheeish*

*puts on stern voice*

Ahh, so you spotted the little issue with the old client and New Work Units ending in a <space> ! ? , or . then did you.

Good boy

Bugger.

Sorry about that - there is a new client coming with a simple bug fix in it (1_3_2). I made the unforgiveable mistake of not testing 1_3_1 with the new units - and it doesn't know how to detect completion if the new work unit ENDS in one of the new characters.

Sorry again.

Anyone running the client will have noticed that it has stopped collecting WUs. This is due to an update which is now available on the site:

13thlabour

A patch and full version are available

Stats counters

First off, thanks very much for keeping the system going with these new phase 2 units and the clever approach to splitting the work between phase 1 and phase 2 clients. Excellent work. I'm feeling confident that this new expanded key space will find us our solution.

Is someone working on the stats system? It seems to have stopped working. I love to look at the progress everyday. The stats system seems to have stopped on Sep 23rd at 23:00.

Keep up the good work.
Cheers,
Mark

BTW - My games magazine, PCZone (UK) gave away a pack of perplexcity cards with the magazine a few months ago. I tried to get the interested in this challenge (lettersSPLATpczone.co.uk) but unfortunately they didn't respond. I was hoping they might print the letter and get readers interested.

You could try reducing the throttle setting in the config file - my machine does the same if I leave it at the default, I think the processor overheats. I probably ought to sort out the cooling on the ol' PC I guess....
