a hello

hi everyone,
i JUST found this game (and the world of ARGs in general) and I'm scrambling to catch myself up with everything that has gone on, and im terribly disappointed that I've missed a couple YEARS of interesting stuff. I found a link to the assault on 13th labour website, and I just thought I'd say that im currently running the client Wink I have a huge interest in cryptography so this card was cool to see and I'm glad I can help, if only a bit. Very Happy

Welcome nightswatch. It's great to hear your enthusiasm. This card is proving to be a tough one to crack, we need all the help we can get. Every unit processed is valuable Wink. In some ways I'm jealous that you've only just found Perplexcity because you now have so many superb puzzles and challenges awaiting you.

Enjoy

Sorry, me again. Is there a problem? I don't seem to have been able to get any work units since 13:30 UTC today.

To quote my ISP:

Dear valued e-wire customer,

We are currently experiencing a problem with all connections to the Internet. This is being caused by an attack from outside the e-wire network to a number of our customers. We are currently working to resolve this issue and will endevour to have services restored as soon as possible.

All appears to be back to normal this morning

New Client

The 1.4.0 Client is ready for open use now. There will be a more formal posting (and proper links) on the 13th Labour site soon, but for those wanting to get ahead of the game a patch is available at:

http://www.e-wire.net.au/~eb_oakla/pxc/13labour_1_4_0_patch.zip

Simply extract the contents over your 13th Labour directory and away you go.

For now this client is locked into running Phase 2 of the search - later clients will allow shifting to any of the phases if required.

Enjoy

v1.4.0 is great Chimera245 thanks.

I believe that our best chance of narrowing in on the answer is to focus on the phase II units that have no punctuation in the work unit part (the first 4 characters). Is there any chance of changing the server to hand those out first? Every work unit I've looked at recently has a punctuation character in the first 4 characters.

Cheers,
Mark

Wow, the new client absolutely flies! The old one took about 3 minutes per WU to process on my PC, this one takes just over a minute! Excellent work chimera245.

I also noticed the overall processed units displayed has shrunk to what must be the Phase II units. Is the total Phase II units the figure just over 5 million?

OKay, I'm pretty new to Perplex City (getting through the cards, though of course v short on silvers). I do have this card and I want to help solve it by running The Client but I am the wrong sort of geek to understand what I need to do. I know I need to download the client but then what?

(I did read most of this thread about a week ago, but do trout me if this has been covered).

Hi MrsE

I am not sure what you mean by the wrong sort of geek Laughing If you are totally technophobic this might not help, but have you tried the Thirteenth Labour website, and more specifically http://www.13thlabour.tk/HTML/download.htm#install which is the installation guide?

1.4.0 patch

With the old client, the first thing it did was pick up the WU it was working on when I shut it down and (I assume) report the results for the last 10. The new version didn't do that. I hope that doesn't mean my last 10 WUs fell through the cracks.

The new shorter WUs are going to cause me a certain amount of heartburn. I have a dial-up connection (primitive, I know, but the best I can do in my roo-ral area), and I have to set a kitchen timer to know when to reconnect for a new batch of WUs. 45 minutes wasn't too bad, but every 15 minutes is going to be a pain. Even worse, it sounds like the type of WU may change according to what needs to be done. I need a way to predict how long it will take. Any suggestions?

The WU's from the 1.3.2 client have been recycled - fear not.

The 1.4.0 client gets a fresh set of WU's when it first starts up.

There are just over 20 million Phase II units in total.

I am working on a new Stats Web Service so that we can get the Stats pages up and running again - that should be inplace by the end of the week.

Right, sorry if this has been mentioned already (I am *almost* a complete technophobe, and discovered PerplexCity about 4 days ago...)

On the Assault on 13th Labour website it says that 102.48% of work units have been sorted - so why is there no answer still??!!

Am I reading this too literally?
