[UPDATE] Sentinel - 20 Mar 06 - Earth Edition, Mazy Court

Earth Edition Celebrates First Anniversary
Opinion/Editorial

One year ago tomorrow, the Perplex City Sentinel launched the External Edition of our trail-blazing newspaper. Since that time, we have served as an invaluable line of communication between Earth and Perplex City, bringing our high standards for accuracy and insightfulness to an ever-expanding border. Through our efforts, the two worlds are reaching a degree of understanding and appreciation that we believe would be unprecedented, even if these historic events had some near analogue in history.

The Earth Edition was conceived as a part of Academy Master Sente Kiteway's then-mysterious plan to solicit Earth's aid in seeking out and retrieving the Receda Cube. Though we agreed to fill this role per Kiteway's request, we were very strict regarding our need for editorial independence and integrity. Indeed, the Sentinel's adherence to honesty caused some significant problems in the early months of the Sentinel.

Our staff were unafraid to report on the growing public sentiment that the Academy had no real plan for recovering the Cube, which caused significant strain in the relationship between ourselves and the Academy and Centre for Reality Research. We also reported in those early days on controversy internal to the city, most notably the Northside Preserve development plan and its corresponding uproar (a debate that rages through today). When the Sentinel was stricken with a personnel issue that ultimately resulted in the publisher being terminated, we felt it more important to deliver the ugly truth than paint a pretty face on our own actions.

We felt it crucial to prove even from the beginning that we were no patsy of the Academy's, even when we were working side by side; nor of the government's; and that we are unafraid to examine even ourselves in a critical light. The Sentinel is a proud and historied enterprise, and we do not bend in the face of adversity. Our noble goal is to shed the light of truth everyplace that it would be least welcome.

Those early storms have been gracefully weathered, and the Sentinel has maintained its legendarily high standards even for our cousins on Earth all the while. We continue to strive to bring the Earth both news relevant to the Cube and the hunt therefore, but also a taste of the city itself. Our reporting has covered crime, politics, sports, and art; and the link to Earth has enabled us to bring the phenomenally popular View from Earth column to both editions of the paper, a small move that has resulted in a broader and deeper understanding between our civilisations.

We look back on the past year and feel tremendous pride in this achievement. We hope our readers also feel they have been a part of something greater than themselves. And even as we pause to reflect on the past year and all that it has held, we look ever forward to the years to come. There will always be new stories to write, new opinions to explore, and new truths that must be sought and brought to the eyes of the public.

"We're very excited about the changes we have planned," said Mazy Wave representative Janice Cornfellow.

FUTURES

Quote:
The Eagle (March 11 - April 10)
Love what you've been doing with yourself lately. Looks like this birthday is the one where you get a little extra confidence. Looks like you're going to start figuring out what Madame has known for years: being young is so overrated, isn't it?

The Spider (April 11 - May 10)
Your authority problems could make life hard for you this week. Try to swallow that pride of yours and just do what you have to do. You can stand up as an individual against the man another day, when it's a little more important.

The Wave (May 11 - June 10)
Get out into the countryside sometime soon, doll; you need the fresh air and exercise. I promise it's good for the spirit. Sometimes it helps to get away from your problems to get a new perspective; and sometimes nothing is as bad as you'd thought.

The Archer (June 11 - July 10)
A string of surprises takes your carefully scheduled week and tosses it right out the window. Things may still work out, but my goodness, pumpkin, you need to learn to be more flexible.

The Half-filled Jug (July 11 - August 10)
You are the star of the show, honey, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. It's up to you to make sure the show is the one you want to be in, mind you -- the stars don't control everything.

The Dragon (August 11 - September 10)
Just cut out the snark, sweet pea, nobody wants to hear it.

The Three Balls (September 11 - October 10)
You think you need a change, but trust me, that's the last thing you need right now. If you must seek variety, try to keep it small. Put a different condiment on your burger or something. Just don't do anything dramatic like cutting your hair, 'k?

The Dice (October 11 - November 10)
Thursday will be a day you've dreamed about. You know, the dream where everyone knows what's going on except you? There's just one crucial piece of information you're missing, though, and once you figure out what that is, you'll be fine.

The Maze (November 11 - December 10)
Last week's flirtatious look on the subway grows into a bit of small talk about the weather mid-week. Press your luck, hot stuff, and try for a cup of coffee by Friday. What have you got to lose?

The Apple-Thief (December 11 - January 10)
Let us, then, be up and doing, with a heart for any fate; still achieving, still pursuing, learn to labour and to wait.

The Hand (January 11 - February 10)
Keep your key close at hand this week. Sometime in the next few days you're going to stumble on an amazing holiday sale, and you'll of course want to tell all of your friends. Buy an extra one for me, too, muffin.

The Baby (February 11 - March 10)
Things are looking up for you this week! No, I mean really, look up. This will not be a good week for you, in terms of things falling on your head. I also advise against opening very full cabinets.

And remember, memory can be longer than life.

I'm sure some people here remember Receda's Revenge, don't you? Opening full cabinets is dangerous, especially when wearing a sock puppet in your hand, Laughing.

You have to admit that sock puppets come in somewhat handy when trying to get across bridges guarded by trolls though...

What does that mean? Does it mean it hasnt all gone smoothly this time round, or that in the past when they have been chatting to Earth, or another planet, it ended badly? Maybe linked to the History, or even war?

Just Spec tho, and ive probably just mis-intepreted the line

No, I think they're saying (in a slightly clumsy sort of way) "It's going so well that, even if something like this had happened before (which it hasn't), it would still be loads better."
