the idea of folding the paper is speculation, but it seems more likely to yield an answer than regarding the picture as a maze. i cannot seem to fold it into anything coherent, as yet, but that doesn't mean this is a dead end. the answer might be down this road, and i just can't see it. hence the post.

i'm not saying this is correct, but it's a stab in another direction. all the previous explanations from this thread don't seem viable.

at all.

Clearly you didn't read the part about the elephant.

many more ideas.

well. yes, i did witness that example of brilliance. however, now, i've inspired the creation of the cabb-phant, apparently.

that's progress. =P

edit: on a serious note, i've tried to fold the page so that the two pills become one (this can be achieved a couple ways), thinking them an aid in discovering something in the brain, but to no avail.

another oddity is the clouds at the bottom of the advertisement. they're upside down: the shadows are always on the bottom of clouds, away from the sun. if you turn the page upside down, the reflection of "expand your mind" stands out... except that it's backwards. hold this paper upside down in front of a mirror aaannnddd...

you still get nothing.

in fact, all i really see is an image that resembles a small intestine more than a brain. and i can see a lot of phallic symbols in that brain/stomach (pick your favorite).

edit again: on that note, talking about phallic symbols on the brain... if you fold the paper so that the subtitle "Want to think faster, smarter, longer?" instead says "Want to think faster, longer?" (two qualities that apply), the headline now says "EXPAND YO MIND". and below the subtitle, it says "Now yo..."

maybe it has something to do with ebonics/african slang.

just maybe. yo.

did anyone think that it could be the actual area of the brain that is highlighted?

I'm thinking temporal lobe, maybe?

puzzle CGW solved?

hi, first post here so be easy if something's wrong with it, ok?

did anyone actually solve this thing? I just found this puzzle in my copy of CGW yesterday and have been folding and shading this poor piece of paper ever since. I finally gave in and checked the boards here. I really see an elephanty thing in it so that's what i put in.

but just for my own curiosity, what is the real answer??

I entered a few parts of the mesencephalon that are in that general area along with some common groupings, but the encircled area doesn't match up very cleanly with anything I am aware of/ could find. I hadn't thought of the temporal, but I guess I was taking it as a cross-section with the medulla, pons, peduncle, etc. showing. Hmm...

No one actually knows yet what the confirmed answer is. Everyone is waiting for emails to come through, but none have yet.

Must say that from my medicy viewpoint, I wasn't convinced that the topology looked like a real brain at all. I went with the
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
lightbulb/eureka
theory.

But I'll put on my glasses for a second check.

I went a slightly different way with the
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
lightbulb
idea. Probably in a wrong direction, but I still like the idea, at least.

First Google search for "Expand Your Mind" brought up this page:
http://www.expandyourmind.com

A site talking about logic problems, puzzles, and "expanding your mind." Hasn't been updated according to the front page in a while, though.

In the introduction, they talk about inventors who were able to "strive past the illusion of the obvious."

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
So, running with that, and how we have a "light bulb" in the maze, I submitted "Edison" as my answer (since that's the inventor most often thought of when thinking of the device), although it's possible that they were looking for Swan or Woodward.

Hey

How's it goin' guys, I'm new to the board, but was very intrigued by this puzzle I found in my copy of CGW today...

I too assumed the answer to be "AHINTISCLOSEBY" simply due to the obviousness of it, however I wasn't entirely sure.

To me, the obvious answer seems like an obvious choice (Excuse the oxymoron there.) due to the fact that they want people to get hooked into this game, and by doing so with such an easy puzzle, it will grab more than just the hardcore people.

On the other hand, the end of the article mentions "Fake ads in magazines" - Clearly what we have here, a fake ad for a fake drug. Now throw on the fact that it says in the whole article "AHINTISCLOSEBY" that leads us to believe that the Ceretin/Cognivia ad is merely a hint, and that AHINTISCLOSEBY is not the actual answer itself, but is what's pointing us to the fact that the page next to it is itself a puzzle.

The brain looks like the most obvious thing to look at there, what with it being fairly central on the page, and the page being fairly plain with the brain itself being the most intricate and complex puzzle there... But what if that's there merely to throw you off? What if it's to make you OVER think and try TOO hard?

Maybe the solution lies within the text, or the clouds. Maybe the solution IS "AHINTISCLOSEBY"... Either way, if there was a 100% solution, it would be undeniable, which leads me to believe that neither Elephant nor Lightbulb would be correct. They're too vague. I could make the shape of a lightbulb out of the picture of someone's small intestine, but that doesn't mean that they're the reincarnation of Edison, you get me? Razz

Edit: Although, looking back on the lightbulb idea, it's not actually a bad one... The vague shape of a lightbulb IS there, and the fact the ad says "If you're bright enough to solve the puzzle on this page." but it's still kinda vague...
