I took the hint to be the text:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"if you are bright enough"

as that was close by to the puzzle Very Happy

Has anyone gotten an email yet? Or a treat in the mail? I've submitted my guesses as well, but I'm curious to see if there have been any results.

I think that this puzzle should be a lot easier than we are making it out to be. "AHINTISCLOSEBY" is definitly NOT the answer, nor is elephant/lightbulb. Near the bottom of the body of text, it says, "If you are bright enough to find the puzzle on this page, solve it, and go to www.cognivia.com/testing, enter your details and we'll be in touch." This is telling us that we have to FIND the puzzle, and then solve it. I highly doubt that the puzzle is a visual objective. (ie. shading in parts of the brain)

Perplex City is a game that requires a lot of online research in order to solve the puzzles. Keeping this in mind, a quick google search for "ceretin" results with this page, http://wiki.incognitus.net/ppc/index.php/Ceretin

One of the sentences from this page reads, "Acts to stimulate the brain, particularly the hypothalamus, frontal lobes and the hippocampus." Perhaps these areas of the brain will correspond to the brain on the puzzle page.

I also took a long look at the text. The phrase, "If you're bright enough..." seemed to pop out at me. My attempts to see something while holding the page up to the light broght me no closer to a solution. I also took a look at the reflection seen under the words, "Expand your mind". The reflection of "your" appears to read "look". This looks pretty concrete to me, but the reflections of expand and mind yield no results.

Everbody here needs to keep an open mind and keep at this thing. I'm determined to solve this puzzle because my inability to solve it has really gotten under my skin. It's unfortunate that this game is only available in the U.K. and the U.S., because if it were up here in Canada, I would jump on this. thusly, if I find the answer, you can be sure I'll post the answer up here.

COME ON GUYS! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! Very Happy Wink

I also noticed that the reflection appears to read "look." It could be my imagination, but the shadow/reflection of "mind" looks to me almost like "wind." Of course, this is obvious, I suppose, since an upside-down M is a W. I dunno.

But armed with this information, I looked at the clouds a little closer, and I thought I saw
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
a face hidden in the clouds at the top of the ad, about a third of the way across from the left, directly above the red pill on the right. Like some face with a crazy afro around it, or something.

Consequently, I began to think of that, coupled with the lightbulb (?) in the brain if you treat it like a maze, and the word "bright." I came up with a line of thought following
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"bright ideas," and thought that many of Earth's most famous thinkers have been described as having their "heads in the clouds." Which is exactly what I think I found hidden in the picture.

So I submitted the words
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"head in the clouds."
I don't think that this is likely to be the answer, but really, who knows?

heh, alright, I'm going to give a hint to my answer (mainly because I'm surprised no one else has mentioned it yet):

...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
it's mathematical. and yes, their hint is quite close by.

As much as I'd like to believe it's a mathematical thing, I don't quite see how on Earth you can connect the hint of "AHINTISCLOSEBY" to anything math related on either page.

I see card numbers, the fact there are 256 cards, the mention of the $200,000, the page number, and a few small things like "Two events, the third power, and four-hour live text adventure."

None of these things look like solid clues towards anything, not to mention the whole "AHINTISCLOSEBY" looks more of a reference to the ad on the next page itself, more than something pushing towards an actual solution. The article is about the game, people interested will notice the bold type. The bold type will make people look toward the ad and realize it's an actual puzzle, as opposed to skipping it and dismissing it like most other ads in the magazine. Most people would read the article first I would think. (Although the ad DID catch my eye first.)

I just don't see how you could've gotten something mathematical out of all of this, as there's no solid connection to it.

Also on a side note, I do too see that face in the clouds...
It may just be pure coincidence, but it bears an odd resemblance to one of two things.

1) A black guy with sunglasses and a strangely shaped afro.
2) Albert Einstein (Which is a little more fitting.)

But as I said, that may not be intentional.

Ok, so i've been looking over this for awhile, I can't really get a final answer i'm too confident with.

I have seen that a lot of people think "a hint is close by" is directly related to cognivia or the clue itself. I think, since it was never explicitly mentioned that the advertisement to the right of the article was fake, that it was CGW's not-so-subtle way of telling everybody who wasn't familiar with perplexcity "HEY! LOOK AT THE NEXT PAGE! WEREN'T WE JUST TALKING ABOUT FAKE ADS?" Just thought I'd add my two cents on that, since some seem to think it might have something to do with the clue.

Other than all that, I doubt it's that deformed-nose dachshund of an elephant, so the best answer seems like light bulb to me. i'll keep looking though.

So what's the general rule for sending e-mails to in-game addresses? If you get an auto-reply it's a real address and if you get nothing - it's nothing? I wonder because on the Cognivia Testing page it makes a comment about contacting the testing department. There's no e-mail addy and nothing on their contact page says "testing department" or whatever. I tried sending an inquiry to testingSPLATcogniviaDOTcom, but didn't get the auto-reply. Does that mean they aren't monitoring it? I sent one to blablublableySPLATcogniviaDOTcom to see if it would bounce and it did. Anybody else try anything?

My inquiry was just to ask how things were going with the CGW advert (if they got any correct answers etc.). Maybe somebody that knows what tact is could try to see what's going on over there?

I'm pretty convinced the answer is
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
lightbulb
as there's so much pointing to it, but don't listen to me, i was stupid enough to put my proper age which is five years older than they are looking for!! Rolling Eyes
