Earth Anthology Sells Well Despite Cool Critical Reception
By FOSTER LIDDELL

Tales from Earth, the anthology of fiction written by Cube hunters for a Perplexian audience, has sold nearly a hundred thousand copies to date, putting it solidly at the top of the best-seller charts for the last several weeks. Seaside Press has called this a "victory for interworld relations," and has put a giant marketing push behind the book, calling it "Earth's personal message to us."

The book seems to have perfectly caught the same wave of enthusiasm for all things related to Earth that has brought unparalleled success to such diverse projects as the Earthworks retail chain and the Earth-based cuisine available from restaurants from Mexi's Place to Conundra. "Earth is hot right now," said publishing analyst Lawrence Fenne-Seaford. "Seaside's genius here is that they worked to bring in original content rather than merely redistributing works available on Earth already."

Reviews of the book among the wider literary crowd have been mixed, however, even veering to hostile in some instances. One review in the City Literary Review called the offerings in the book "varied in tone and, frankly, in quality." Critics have nearly unanimously frowned upon the uneven tone of the book and suggested that the nominal editor, Violet Kiteway, did little if anything in the way of quality control or editorial oversight.

Some have even suggested that Seaside Press has descended into mere sensationalism by publishing Tales from Earth, though given the book's impressive sales numbers, it is difficult to argue against the tactic. Fenne-Seaford suggested that the book's sales speak for themselves, regardless of any determination of artistic merit.

Seaside editor Ellen Moriyama scoffed at the angry reception by the literary community. "We're providing a voice to people on Earth who have something to say to Perplex City," she said. "The cultural elitists in our city are trying to make some kind of example of this book, trying to tear it down as an example of everything that's wrong with Earth, but we feel absolutely the opposite. ... Real people on Earth poured real time and energy and love into these stories, and it's ridiculous to criticise this heartfelt offering on the grounds that it doesn't adequately respect the traditional literary conventions and traditions of our own culture."

As Seaside Press has no direct method of paying the authors for their work, they have set up a scholarship for students at the Academy who plan to specialise in Earthology. The scholarships will be awarded by a panel of fellows in the Academy's Social Sciences department.

Ramazel Overtakes Top Spot Alone
By KATE BREWSTER

The leaderboard made way today for the late-breaking ascension of Ramazel of France, who has overtaken the top spot on the board, now occupying it alone with 7000 points and 129 solves. She was a member of The Cube ReCoventry Team, which finished in fourth place at the London PCAG event.

Despite this small flurry of activity on the leaderboard, things have begun to settle down again. Last week's top players, oliverkeers13, Coxtin and number9dream remain in joint second place (knocked down by Ramazel from shared first last week) with MikeyJ alone in fifth. It is widely anticipated that members of the other winning PCAG teams may begin rising to the top as the next several weeks unfold.

The total number of registered players, currently standing at just under over 17,700 continues to grow at an increasing pace with over 200 players signing up in the last two days alone. The total numbers of cards solved has surpassed 220,000, and well over 5000 cards have been solved in the last week alone. A scant third of all solve attempts in the past month were incorrect.

The top-scoring new players of the week were Team_Lebowski who accrued 1835 points off of 69 solves, and browncoats who picked up 1808 points off 45 solves. Only time will tell if they will soar up the board like a leaf on the wind or if they'll simply abide in the mid-ranks. Top new players of the month are moominpapa, logogriph and gunhead who racked up 6375, 5936 and 4836 points, respectively.

PCAG statistician Samara Jones predicted, "We're unlikely to see any additional major changes on the leaderboard until the third wave of cards comes out in late March or early April." Contrary to Jones' statement, however, there are rumours in the Academy that Mind Candy have arranged for several more card promotions where players will be able to obtain certain cards, and their points, for free. So far, no firm details on when, where or even if these promotions will be happening has been disclosed.

Newguard Ruins Need Repairs

The Perplex City Historical Society announced today that the famous Newguard Ruins have been damaged by both flooding last spring and severe weather this winter, and are embarking on a multi-year restoration project to preserve the structures in optimal condition. Study should begin over the summer, with volunteers beginning some temporary buttressing in areas that were the hardest hit. (Full text)

Futures
By Madame Bianca, for the week of March 13

The Eagle (March 11 - April 10)
Feel moved by the spirit of poetry? Go ahead, write it down. Get all of that emotion on paper. You'll feel the better for it, promise. Just don't, you know, show it to anyone where you're done, 'k?

The Spider (April 11 - May 10)
I see you looking at that really adorable new key. Don't do it, though. What you're forgetting is the break-in period, and you don't have the energy to deal with change right now. Or you won't after Wednesday, anyhow.

The Wave (May 11 - June 10)
Go out on a limb and throw an office barbeque. The weather will be fine and the flowers are already flirting at Polygon. Besides, offering free food and drink was never a bad career move.

The Archer (June 11 - July 10)
I love you, but sometimes I wonder why. You need to stop concentrating so hard on the big picture and take a look at the little things you've been missing, like meeting your friends for a drink and some gossip. They miss you, doll.

The Half-filled Jug (July 11 - August 10)
Put together a big party for the Builder's Celebration this year. You may not have it planned, but I am telling you this will be a big year for home improvement for you. Costly infrastructural improvements, at that.

The Dragon (August 11 - September 10)
Everyone but you will be out sick pretty much the whole week. Think you're lucky you missed the bug? That's because you haven't figured out yet who will be getting all of the work done single-handedly.

The Three Balls (September 11 - October 10)
You're letting your brains get positively mossy, sweet pea. Step one: get outdoors and get some blood pumping through that old grey matter. Step two: find a PCAG qualifier and give it your best shot. Use it or lose it, button.

The Dice (October 11 - November 10)
Spring is warming up your blood, but don't let it make you hot-tempered. Find something peaceable to do for a few days, until you get used to being thawed out again.

The Maze (November 11 - December 10)
You will be plagued by a foul taste in your mouth for several days. There will be no helping it, so don't even try. At least nobody else can tell, right?

The Apple-Thief (December 11 - January 10)
When love entered my world, it first flew in my heart, then wandered about place to place; perched in my brain, inside my head, asking tears from my eyes, and got blood instead.

The Hand (January 11 - February 10)
This is it! Beginning the moment you read this, you will have a whole new lease on life. Breathe in deeply and feel some gratitude; it's not every day the stars grant you a fresh start, pumpkin.

The Baby (February 11 - March 10)
Be easy on your friends and acquaintances this week, darling. You can be on the demanding side, and frankly, nothing you want is that important right now, so give it a rest.

And remember, the blackest clouds don't always rain.

Of course! I knew it instantly! The Apple-Thief is a poem by Nahapet Quchak and Armenian given to fruity verse such as...

Quote:

YOUR BOSOM

Your bosom is a white church,
your breasts, lamps and candles.
Let me be the sexton in charge
of lighting the chapel.

Presumptuous boy, don't you dare
speak about chapels.
You're just the type who'd go off
Without lighting a single candle.

And on the topic of our own literary efforts, alas the Tom Paulins and Bonnie Greers don't like it, but the trash-reading masses do, they're all glued to it on the tube; it's bigger than the Da Vinci Code...and less coherent. A success!

Do you think that we are allowed to suggest people to sit on the panel - Violet as editor should be a shoe in, and she would ensure that people with the, er, "right attitude" were getting in!!!!

Hi, I'm Ramazel. I'm very happy to be finally at the top of the leaderboard (with a bit of help from the Unfiction forums for the most difficult cards... Didn't have a chance with Elucidate!). I'm sure it won't last though, as other winners of the Earth events will catch up, not to mention the coming Wave 3 cards (can't wait!).

I've posted a bit on the forums, in particular got involved in the solve of Ciphers of History. Now currently trawling through the 40+ pages of Shuffled to see if I can make any sense of it.

I'm also following the hunt for the cube with interest, but haven't contributed much yet (and I should have been trouted at least once Embarassed but thankfully people just ignored me).

Oh, and I am really French, though based in the UK. Any puzzle in French, send it to me... Wink

Not yet, sorry... I was in the CRT: middle-aged woman, red jacket, short curly hair, glasses. I don't think anybody took my picture. To be honest, I didn't know anybody before the event, and, being a bit shy, I don't know that many now either. You might have seen me at the pub after the London Eye, trying to make sense of the Morse code with NickF and a few other people whose names I didn't catch (sorry...).

Nope, I was sitting at the low table by the door. I only stayed for an hour anyway, I had to catch a train back home.
