Claire's confession
Category: story, 02:07 PM

I said: "What do you mean 'what our family did at Viendenbourg'? I don't understand."
Claire Castille sighed and looked down at her hands again.
She said, in a voice so low I could barely hear her: "What did he tell you?"

I shook my head, still puzzled.
She spoke again: "What did my father tell you?"

I think I understood then, before she even explained it to me properly. But my voice spoke, even while my brain raced to the conclusion of the story.

"He told me a great wrong had been done to your family, at Viendenbourg. That you were sacrificed to save the city. I saw him crying while looking through the evidence in the military archives, and that was because of what had been done to you. He told me that he wanted to achieve justice."

Claire looked at Allain, then back at me.
"We do," she said, "we do want to achieve justice. We need to find out the truth. But the family legend is not that we were sacrificed. We were complicit in what happened at Viendenbourg. Our family was destroyed, but we were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of others. I suppose," she took another swig from her mug of tea, "that he was crying because he knew that. Because of guilt. Which we still feel after all these generations. That's why we have to know what really went on there."

She took Allain's hand and held it between hers. She smiled at him.
"And that's why I told you to stay away from your grandfather. Because I couldn't bear him to know that someone is trying to do again at Viendenbourg what was done in the past. And what we think was done here, at Anjsbourg." She looked back at me. "I don't know for certain. All I have to go on are some fragments of information, some family legends, and some information I found at the Viendenbourg base. But I think we might find the answers here, in the ruins of Anjsbourg.

"And there's something else as well." She sighed again and smiled a strange, wistful kind of smile. "Allain, I can't go back to the city. If you want to go, I can't go back with you. Because someone's after me, and if he finds out where I am he'll come, and he'll find me, and he'll kill me." She smiled again. "This probably sounds crazy, like a paranoid woman gone mad from too much time by herself, but I'm afraid it's true. I worked on a job in 267 - an illegal job, I sometimes take them on to fund our Viendenbourg research - but this one went bad. The man who employed me has eliminated the two others who worked on the job with us and I'm certain he'd come after me if he could."

Allain, who had been silent all this time, his eyes half shut against the sun, suddenly stirred. He bit his bottom lip, ran his hand through his hair and said:
"Who? Who is it who's after you? We can find a way to stop him."

And Claire Castille smiled again and said:
"He's a shadow, a figment. You could never find him. I only ever knew him as V," she shook her head, "and that's no help at all."

What does she mean? Is V not human? That opens a lot of possibilities... Is he an AI? With a T3-like body that changes at will?

I think that might be a metaphor rather than saying V is just an actual shadow.

Great spec though Laughing

Sorry, I didn't explain myself well, I didn't mean he was an actual shadow. But her metaphors and the "You could never find him" point to someone who isn't real, or who doesn't live in the real world. Hence the AI idea. For all I know, it could also be someone currently on Earth who somehow has power within Perplex City, maybe through the key network.

The T3 reference was more about the murder of Monica and the fact that the police was unable to identify the blood of the murderer. So far we've thought it was V, but he would have needed a body for that. And you definitely couldn't find him if he could change his appearance. But it's very far-fetched, yeah.

Perhaps even "V" is a term to describe the person currently doing the job. Some sort of mind control by the real V, he uses a random individual, takes over their minds (Reynolds Ionisers somehow????) does the deed then releases control. No-one ever knows who really did it as the memories of the job are wiped from th host mind.

Yeah Ive been watching too many films and sci-fi too..... Rolling Eyes

Plus V is Cyrus Quinton. Though nobody really knows who that is. Should we inform Scarlet about who V is? Maybe Claire could use her computer powers to find something out.

That's only a spec though.

OOG-I would be suprised if V were a T3 figure, PPC is an alternate reality game rather than an alternative to reality game. The whole premise is that it has a grounding in reality. So flying monkeys children, aliens or bug eyed monsters are unlikely and disappointing if they did turn up...saying that an AI programme is possible, but a coherent 'game' story would need an eveeel character. Unless it's like 'I Robot'...which would be interesting, but I doubt it would happen.

An operative

Or - I remember in the original Aeon Flux animations when an operative died another one "awoke" bit like the Cylons in the new Battlestar - a collective mind.

Clones?

Oh the possibilities are endless.

We should try and get a photo of Cyrus from Hesh or somewhere - someone must have a picture of him - remember the suprise birthday party Alejo mentioned - people tend to carry cameras to these sort of things. maybe he slipped up once.....

reminds me of the shadow of the wind, the whole 'he's a shadow thing'. Surely C knows SOMETHING more about V.

Y'all watch too many movies! Laughing

Cyrus Quinton was V. Dunno how much proof you need, but having a taunting recording in his work files and completely disappearing from the PXC network are pretty strong indicators of the fact, I would think. Fits in with Claire's "shadow" comment, anyway. Smile

But yeah, I think asking Scarlett to ask Claire about Quinton's a great idea. She's not the most suggestable of contacts (blargh, scripted nonsense), but it can't hurt. Maybe get the girl to get a physical description of V from Claire? I was also thinking that we all might want to tell Scarlett that she's dealing with a Cube thief while we're mentioning Quinton. Maybe. Razz

Actually, if you ignore the sci-fi "inhabiting people's bodies" spec, locquest, it's quite an interesting idea - what if V isn't a name, so much as a "title" for the person who's currently working in that position. You know how in the MI5 the boss is always called "M"? (Think James Bond here, people.)

So Cyrus could simply be the current V. There might have been others. Indeed, there might be a new one now! Oh, the possibilities... (fischer price.)

Yeah thats what I also thought with the 'M', just the sci-fi aspect sounded alot more fun. Very Happy

However either way this does bring us to another problem. How many "V's" are there? Is this going a lot bigger than 3P to keep a secret like that?

Well, holy poop stick. we've been lied to!

wait, aren't we always lied to?

*sigh* and they're supposedly the good guys?

EDIT: ... It's kinda weird at the end there. No-one actually knows who V is, right? so why does no-one describe him, why does no-one have a picture of quinton? i don't thing that they're the same people...

Also, It took her a week to tell us that? omg, that is the lamest week ever...
