So a long range transporter. Nice!

Well, it's feasable, with a large enough energy source and the right calculations. Now, The cube being a large enough energy source and the academy housing the most briliant minds ever...

that's what we're discussing, and some possible way to send people...

Speculating on portals:

The clean area in Gillit Road is for one. (Clean like Cymbalisty's room! Razz)
It must not let anything else though, especially on a microscopic level, than what is being sent (ionized?). (Bah, another book pops in to my head - Connie Willis' Doomsday book, where spatiotemporal portals are constructed to prevent one from bringing anything back in time that would affect the timeline and lose the present day - like pathogens. But that's in a contained planet. If matter must be ionized to be transferred across spacetime, then sterility of environment surely must be a prerequisite, yes?)

I remember when I first joined the Unforums that Cassandra mentioned something about a dig somewhere where they had uncovered an ancient monument. Wild spec floated around after about UFO landing pads, matter transporters etc. I wonder if this is linked? Typically I cant find the relevant discussion or Sentinel article though!

This is starting to sound like my cosomolgy course last year! Your probably right, but then from a science POV nobody really knows how to do this in real life so it could require anything!

If Perplex City is in the same physical universe as we are, I'd suggest quantum entanglement, "spooky action at a distance." Normally it only works on a couple atoms, but the cube could have some special properties. Maybe it's a sort of solid, stable Bose-Einstein condensate? That might work. If that's the case, though, it's unlikely that the same technique could transmit people. Of course, if they live in a close-but-not-quite universe, physics-wise, anything goes.

For some reason im reminded of phillips pullmans book, the amber spyglass. In one chapter it says that the the many worlds have sot of "crashed" and "entangled" themseleves into eachother. Maybe thats whats happned with earth and perplex city.(while im thinking, to people who havent read this book, the book is set in many diffrent worlds)

Also, don't forget that Hesket Zeller and his entire lab disappeared while working on the Cube.

Quote:
To this day nobody is certain what experiment Zeller was performing; it is known only that he, his lab and equipment, and all of his records were vaporised in a cloud of steam that left no residual heat or noxious gases.

Maybe he was transported, as opposed to vaporized...

I've always thought of the timeline as being Y shaped...ie, we shared the same path, then it split off (possibly because of the discovery of the Cube/the Granier experiment?).

Great book series, btw; I highly recommend it. ;D

Whoops, feeling a bit under the weather today and just wasn't thinking straight. Wink

In response to locqust, here's what Kurt said about Reyolds Ionizers:

Quote:
All I can conclude is that a Reynolds Ioniser is some sort of classified military item, and that it would be a very good idea to stop poking around in such things.

That's what attracted the militar trace, which turned out to be from Claire Castille...maybe it'd be wise to ask her more about it?
