Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I always felt it would be a solitaire on the letters with the outside ones removed and the keyword being like a cryptic crossword solution to the entropy quote. It was just always the numerous other coincidences that pulled me in other directions and ultimately made me drop really working on it.

The fact the keyword isn't just a single word is the tricksy part. Before it felt so futile trying multiple decode methods on every idea, not even knowing if any of them even had a chance of yielding the correct answer, but now knowing that with the right phrase I'll actually get the right result, I'll have to try nutting it out.

Course, I never really was any good with cryptic crosswords....

Indeed. There's a lot going on in this puzzle. Even with all the red herrings removed you still have this riddle to solve. It makes me wonder why all the extra stuff was added (disappearing text especially). For me, I think they should have either made the riddle more accessible or left out the heat sensitive bits. Perhaps the rest of the confusion was just us trying too hard (see signature).

...
solve

i solved it thanks to uk ver 2.0's hints. he had speculated what part of the 'if entropy wins...' pass phrase was relevant
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
but really all of the phrase is relevant to the solve within a poem it alludes to.

Congrats wonko! Yeah me too. Well the phrase and the question. But not the actual answer. Gotta do some story research. The clues have gotten so thick on the ground over at perplexorum as of today, it was hard NOT to figure it out.

Now that I know the answer, I think I see what made this so much harder than was intended. The sticking point was, obviously, getting the keyphrase; everything else about the card was guessed ages ago. The only way to get the keyphrase was by interpreting the phrase "outward looks should leave you cold". The big problem is that we didn't know that this was the clue. The designer clearly wanted to draw our attention to those six words, but instead wound up drawing our attention to the nine-word sentence starting with "If entropy wins...", greatly confusing matters.

To see what I mean, just look at the page for Shuffled on the Perplex City Wiki, http://perplexcitywiki.com/wiki/Shuffled. Nowhere does it treat of the phrase "outward looks should leave you cold" as a unit. The phrase appears appears four times on that page, and all four times, it's preceded by "If entropy wins". It just didn't occur to us that the phrases were separable. It probably didn't occur to the designer that we would see it this way.

Had the designers of the card just omitted the words "if entropy wins", I personally think it would have been a better puzzle.

... whoa.

Shuffled got solved?

After more than a hundred pages of build-up, I would have expected a litte more buzz about this ... but I guess that makes the solve an even more impressive display of persistence.

Congratulations, UKver2.0!

On Perplexorum, there are lots of hints as to the answer, amounting
to "Look at this work by that author, etc."

Sorry, I have never seen a hint as to how one could arrive at the
solution -- that is, giving a path from the puzzle as stated
originally to the answer. Maybe that will come later.

Joe

Is there anywhere that still has a shuffled decoder? I have tried all the links but they seem to be removed.

jimtouu - you might want to PM the various folks who posted about their decoders - most likely aren't watching the forums any more, but a PM may get their attention.
