[UPDATE] Sentinel - 03 April 06 - Drug Trials

Mother of Four Gains 'Whole New Life' in Drug Trials
By NATASHA VALLIERE
Jeanine Lowry-Barton may seem like a fairly ordinary person; the 53-year-old mother of four lives in an unremarkable house near Shiran Lane and has a modest business selling hand-crafted pottery. She is anything but typical, however: Eight years ago, she was diagnosed with Barrow-Feld Syndrome, which to all accounts progressed rapidly.

Her physician, Dr. Frida Jannsen, watched helplessly as Lowry-Barton progressed through the stages of the horrible disease; deceit, theft, and increasing incoherence. "It's terrible to see a patient like this, so young and with so much to live for, and there's nothing at all you can do to help," she said. "I estimate we were about three months away from having to check Jeanine into a facility for the rest of her life."

Lowry-Barton describes her terrible condition as a battle with another creature directing her impulses. "I call him the cheat," she said. "I couldn't really tell he was even there, though. It felt like it was all me, all things I wanted to do."

Then, in late 266, Jannsen received a request for candidates to participate in an experimental drug trial at Cognivia for patients suffering from Barrow-Feld. Lowry-Barton was one of the first patients enrolled in the program, and Cognivia came forward to announce its first success with the new drug, Veritana.

Cognivia spokesman Lawrence Kim said that Lowry-Barton's experience should give new hope to all sufferers of Barrow-Feld Syndrome. "Science has been searching for a way to help those afflicted with this stigmatised disease for decades," said Kim. "These people and their families have suffered enough, and a new day is dawning for all of them."

Cognivia sources report that the treatment is primarily for late-onset sufferers of Barrow-Feld Syndrome, and that success with sufferers under 40 has been extremely limited. "We hope to find an equivalent treatment for younger candidates, as well," said Kim. "Our research team is very hard at work."

Lowry-Barton said that the treatment she has undergone does not eliminate the urges she feels to engage in unethical behaviour, but that it's much easier for her to suppress those unwelcome desires. She can now differentiate between the things she herself chooses to do, and those that her disease is spurring her toward. "The cheat is not dead," she said, "but I know how to ignore him now. And I can consciously look at a decision and see it from someone else's point of view again."

The course of treatment hasn't been entirely without its problems, though, and among the side effects Lowry-Barton says she has suffered are headaches, bouts of nausea, vertigo, and hair loss. "I wouldn't trade it for anything, though," she said. "Just to know my family is looking at me again like a person, like they can trust me. I just can't describe how good that feels."

Release of Wave 3 Cards Confirmed
By KATE BREWSTER
Sentinel sources at the Academy have confirmed that the third wave of puzzle cards will be released on Earth on Thursday 6th of April. While the majority of packs will contain a mixture of cards from all three waves, there will also be a limited run of Wave 3-only packs. These limited packs will be available to pre-order on the 6th for delivery several weeks later, but how the players can do this remains a closely guarded secret. So far, both the Academy and Mind Candy have refused to officially comment on this news, stating that they will not be rushed into making any announcements on the basis of leaked information.

The release of Wave 3 cards will likely see a flurry of activity on the leaderboard, which last week saw the total number of players pass the 20,000 mark. Samara Jones, PCAG statistician, commented, "The last few weeks have already seen how the early release of just three Wave 3 cards has completely changed the shape of the board. It's impossible to predict what effect the release of the remaining 59 cards will have. With this wave containing ten cards each at the black and silver levels as opposed to only six, there are more opportunities to gain large numbers of points."

The release of virtual versions of Cards #056, Gravity, and #106 Rickety Old Bridge, has led to a large number of new sign-ups with Mind Candy. The Academy is planning on keeping these available to all registered players for the foreseeable future. Other upcoming promotions are rumoured to involve a Wave 4 card.

Tally remains the top player on the leaderboard with Gibbet and Ramazel in 2nd and 3rd place respectively. At the top of the US leaderboard are Hunting4Treasur, UKver2.0 and walther, all with 6944 points. The top players on the girls' and boys' leaderboards are Tally, Ramazel and jojojojo representing women; and Gibbet, number9dream and oliverkeers13 on behalf of men.

In other news, it is now possible for the players to create their own mini-leaderboards through their tracked players list, as these lists are now ordered by points. Players can subscribe to an RSS feed of the Perplexcity.com news page; UK, US, Boys' and Girls' leaderboards are now available; you can now search for other players from the leaderboard page; and the solved cards grid now displays the card's wave as well as its name and number when you hover over it.

Futures
By Madame Bianca, for the week of April 3
The Eagle (March 11 - April 10)
Don't be so dazzled by the sun in your eyes that you miss the gap in your path. It's a real long way down, honey, and there's no landing softly this time around.

The Spider (April 11 - May 10)
Always so busy, busy, busy with your planning and your scheming. You've been at this for how long, now? And how's it working for you? I know you're thinking 'so far, so good,' but you need to keep an eye out for the day when it's not true anymore.

The Wave (May 11 - June 10)
Stay far, far away from your boss this week. I suggest a course of arranging as many off-site meetings as possible and a few judicious messages about your poor health. Try to avoid direct conversation, though. It just won't go well for you.

The Archer (June 11 - July 10)
You need to loosen up a little, sunshine. Get yourself a kicky new key, maybe a day at the spa, and very definitely a night out on the Strip. The world won't end if you take some time out, you know.

The Half-filled Jug (July 11 - August 10)
Make sure to try on that shirt before you buy it on clearance. You'll find it's a bit too tight in the shoulders, and a shirt you can't really wear isn't a bargain at any price, now is it?

The Dragon (August 11 - September 10)
Look, everybody is tired of listening to you complain. Get yourself to a physician who can establish for once and for all that you're really in perfectly good health; you just like to whine.

The Three Balls (September 11 - October 10)
Bad decisions from a few years back come home to roost this week. It's interesting, isn't it, how clear it is in hindsight that you shouldn't have done those things? If you grit your teeth and weather it out, things will look up for you on Friday.

The Dice (October 11 - November 10)
That cutie you met last weekend really did lose your number, so don't feel awkward about making conversation when you meet again on Thursday night. That is, if you're fine with dating someone so careless with their information.

The Maze (November 11 - December 10)
One word for you this week: culture. Your horizons are ripe for broadening, so hit some museums, take in some plays, maybe even purchase a work of art for your home. I'd suggest a bit of literature, but really you need to get out more, muffin.

The Apple-Thief (December 11 - January 10)
A vast similitude interlocks all, all spheres, grown, ungrown, small, large, suns, moons, planets, all distances of place however wide, all distances of time, all inanimate forms, all souls, all living bodies though they be ever so different, or in different worlds.

The Hand (January 11 - February 10)
You will be haunted in the coming days with the spectre of improbability. Coincidence will be your constant companion. It really isn't fate trying to tell you anything, so just relax. Sometimes things don't happen for any particular reason at all.

The Baby (February 11 - March 10)
You know that great project you keep meaning to do, if only you had the time? Yeah, too late, pumpkin. You really need to learn to hop on these things right when you think of them. I'd say maybe next year, but we both know better, don't we?

And remember, you can't put an egg back in its shell.

Cognivia Drops on Report

Shares in Cognivia dropped 7% today on the release of the company's shareholder report. Analysts say that the pharamceutical giant has failed to show any true innovation lately, instead relying on incremental improvements to its existing products or new, niche drugs with very limited potential markets.

"pharamceutical" *grumble*

PS. Kick the Cheat! Razz hehe.

I think that this is utterly outrageous. Players grumbled last time that the packs were mixed, and Mind Candy said it was due to printers being difficult, and that they'd sort it. They knew this, and still released them mixed. People will have to pay more to complete their sets now. This means that there'll be a bigger ebay trade, and, from Mind Candy's point of view, more money. I really resent having to make a decision between spending more or waiting "several weeks" to be able to get my hands on the cards that I want. This shows that they were able to separate the waves, but chose not to, due to greed. I'm really not happy about this Evil or Very Mad

Or that they have now set up a better system.

The main packs are therefore aimed at newer players,
and the special packs are for veterans with the heads-up.

The "several weeks" is probably due to it being a separate printing run
and they don't know the scale of the demand.

To wait a couple of weeks to get what you want doesn't really
seem that unfair. we've already been waiting since Christmas.

The Apple Thief quote is from 'On the Beach at Night, Alone' by Walt Whitman (1819–1892)

See it here http://www.poetry-archive.com/w/on_the_beach_at_night_alone.html

There's so much talk of drugs testing recently, I can't help but think MAJOR CLUE, but don't have much idea how it all fits in... Cymbalisty, PCAG, Cognivia, Barrow Felds...... I need tea and a good think!

Hmm. From reading more closely, I don't think it's the packs that will be mixed. IIRC, when wave 2 was released and you ordered, say, 4 packs from Firebox, each pack would have either 6 wave 1 cards or 6 wave 2 ones. Hence, the Packs were mixed in the boxes they were sent from.

This time however it says
Quote:
"the majority of packs will contain a mixture of cards from all three waves"

Meaning, if i'm reading it correctly, that each pack you buy with have a selection of 6 cards from any of the 200 or so available, hence why the packs containing only wave 3 cards are so Special.

Idea Now just need to find one of the PC characters we know with headaches, vertigo, nausea and is loosing hair! Somebody over 40 who secretly suffers from Barrow-Feld Syndrome and stole the Cube on an impulse, or because they ran out of pills (maybe a participant of the trials, maybe a black market alternative)...hmmm...
'runs off to look for pictures of PC ppl with no hair...'

without deceit we would not be human -- how long could civilisation last if we spoke nothing but the truth? -- scary IMO

Sounds good for me, I go away on the 6th, I just hope it'll be done earlier rather than later. If not then I'm gonna be annoyed, anyone willing to pre-order me some if I pay them by paypal or send a cheque? (if I can't do it myself).

Heh, it'd probably be more interesting than Earth medicine.

Well, at least some sort of doctor contact in the great big 'over there' Smile Looks like this is all getting less geeky and more sciency/medical for a bit.

[spec] I'm growing more and more convinced that Cymballisty had some form of Barrow-Feld. Perhaps he was told that the drug he took (the one that killed him) was this new 'cure'? He'd happily knock it back, thinking it would mean he doesn't have to take ceretin any more, it turns out to be a great big dose of teh nasties and he becomes dead. Nice solution to our locked-room murder, isn't it? He *did* technically commit suicide, but he didn't know he was doing it. [/spec]

I like this idea. It would make sense in both areas. Why take it? Because he thought it would help. Anyone with a terminal illness would gladly take something to save their life(or so I assume). And no one would have to go into his apartment to kill him. He does it to himself without anyone having to go in there to do the dirty work.

I totally agree... If cymballisty had any idea he had Barrow-Feld I don't think he'd tell anyone. In my opinion he'd be worried he'd lose respect or even his job; he'd either get some dodgy drugs that he thought would help to cure it or take part in one of the drugs trials.

And I'm very much looking forward to these new cards! Very Happy

I agree with oliver about the mixing of cards, although I guess if they see an opportunity to make more cash they're going to take it...

Interesting about the wave 3 only packs:

Sounds like it won't be as simple as placing an order with Firebox... Maybe some kind of competition?

Very true there, Ducky. Rather than placing somebody (read: Miranda) at Cymbalisty's apartment, we just need to place the testing drug in their hands. Could it be possible that Miranda is/was a test subject for Cognivia?

Something to investigate once people gain access to the Cognivia site.

While we're on the subject, this new drug Cognivia's releasing, Veritana, sounds rather ominous. I know, here on Earth we're only beginning to scratch the surface with behavior-modifying drugs, and that PC pharmaceuticals would probably be more advanced than our own, but this is beyond managing highs and lows. This is personality modification. This is chemically induced docility. Perhaps I'm overreacting at this, and BFS is a serious condition in PC, but this is a true opiate of the masses.
