[UPDATE] Scarlett's Story: Going Home. March 31st

Quote:
I'm on my way home. It feels wonderful, like the air is singing. I've put down the roof of the little car and I can taste spring in the air. I've only come 60 miles or so since I left this morning, but just the idea of home is filling me with happiness. The city! My own house! My bed! My friends! I feel like I can hardly remember the city anymore, or who I was when I was in the city. It's been a long journey.

But it'll be a shorter journey coming home. Claire Castille, who's made several forays in the surrounding area, has given me directions which should cut a lot of time off my travels. And since I won't have to keep stopping to examine strange rock formations, collect soil samples or look for clues of which way to go next, I should be home in about two weeks. Home. Every time I write it, it makes me happy.

I've mailed my friends and family to tell them that my time at the Tanraga nature reserve is coming to an end, and that I'll be back soon. They're so excited to see me, too! Even Brede sent me a note back saying that he's looking forward to seeing me. I am so looking forward to picking up with my normal life again. A part of me just wants to forget that any of this ever happened, just wants to go back to being Scarlett again.

But I know that's not going to be possible. With what I know about the city now, I won't be able to look at anything in the same way again. I've been trying to think of what I'll do when I get back, after I've seen my friends and had my favourite sundae at Whipsmart, of course. I'm not sure who I can tell about what's happened to me, or if I can tell anyone. Maybe Brede? I'm not sure. I was thinking maybe Kurt would be a good person to talk to - but after all the illegal things I've done, I don't know if he'd have any sympathy. Besides, he has a new girlfriend now (he sent me a picture - she's cute) so maybe he doesn't hang out with Violet so much anymore. And Violet? I don't know. I know I can't talk to my father, not after what I found out at Viendenbourg, so maybe I can't trust her, either. I'll have a lot to think about over my next few days of travelling.

It's going to be weird being so alone over this journey. But at the same time, I'm looking forward to it, too. It's been quite difficult to keep my suspicions about Claire to myself all this time, and to ask questions without seeming too curious. Still, this morning as we were packing up my stuff into the car, I managed to put your questions to her, at least as far as I could - she and Allain have already made it pretty clear to me that the family legends are for them alone. Like you suggested, I started off by talking about her father, asking her whether she wanted me to let him know they were safe. She smiled and said that "wouldn't be necessary," that she's found her own way to do that.

I knelt down to check the car's tyres.
"And what about 'V'?" I said. "After everything you've said, I'm worried he'll come after me."

She looked down at me, then carried on tightening the bindings on my trunk as she spoke.
"I can't deny that's a possibility," she said. "You should be careful. Don't tell anyone my name. Don't tell anyone you met me. Don't tell anyone where you've been."

"But what if he does come to find me?" I said. "What should I do? Can you tell me anything about him? What he looks like? What does 'V' stand for?"

She stood away from the car, hands on her hips and surveyed her work. She breathed out slowly.
"Yes," she said, "I suppose you need to know. At least what I know. I only met him three times. He's in his mid-30s, with dark hair. He looks like a thousand other guys you might meet. As for the name, 'V'. Once I heard someone else - someone who's dead now - call him 'Vadik'. Like the shadow-wizard in the story. It's appropriate for him. And as for what you should do if you ever meet him: run. Just run."

"And how," I tried to sound like a naive child, like I couldn't restrain my curiosity, "how did he come to be after you? What did you do?"

Her face clouded at that.
"You don't need to know. It's enough to tell you that I was involved in a robbery, that I wrote some code for him which enabled him to subvert one of the most advanced security systems in the world. But the robbery went wrong. We never got our hands on the target."

"What happened?" I said. I opened my eyes very wide, raised my voice a little higher in the register.

She shook her head. "Someone else was there. I don't know who and I don't know why. But to do what they did, they must have been a better programmer than me. That's not a large group."
She thinned her lips and wouldn't say any more.

I hope that's helpful to you. To be honest, I felt chills just asking about this V, or Vadik. I know you need this information, but I'm hoping that's the end of my involvement with this end of the investigation. Right now, I'm just looking forward to getting home.

*strokes chin*

Just as I thought. Heh.

Ah, Scarlett. I hope you make it home. You may not realize it, but this is exactly the wrong type of entry to write. You should have waited until after your safe arrival.

Hmmmm....a great programmer....>contemplating while rubbing chin<
I am loathe to suggest it but isn't Kurt the programmer extraordinaire...but then again Sente is the security guru..but that doesn't necessarily mean a great programmer.

Kurt as a suspect doesn't seem to fit in with what he has been doing for us however....

Maybe we play to his ego and ask about who, besides himself of course, is the greatest programmer in all of PXC?

**edited because I type slowly and just read Cassandra's post**
Ha..it seems this thread is all about chin stroking - which sounds a wee bit obscene

Oooo, i dunno, classic double agent. And by helping us, he'd be an inside man, he would know what direction our investigation was taking. And prehaps direct us away if we get too close. Wink

could it be the 3P hired someone else? so people would think their attempt failed and someone else did it.

EDIT: or they did get it and claire is lying

Maybe we need to get Scarlett, Violet and Kurt together to compare notes - after all they've all been doing illegal things for us (hmm - I can't think why the Perplexians are worried that we Earthlings are having a corruptive influence on their society Wink ).
I suppose it depends on which side of the debate you're on: Is it Good Kurt Very Happy (all-round nice guy/geek object-of-desire/Violet's future husband) or Bad Kurt Twisted Evil (sinister 'better programmer')?

Well, we do know, suspiciously enough, this:

Quote:
"Did you know that....Sente Kiteway, though he is embarrassed to admit it now, once took the top prize in the Academy first-years' prank tournament? He won it by cracking the Academy's security system and setting it to sound the alarm every time the Master or a Senior Fellow even so much as passed close to a Gatehouse!"

Or Fran Mendling. Ah, the possibilities...

I'm not rejecting the idea for now that V could be the original Vadik, either. I suppose I'm hoping in some way that he's an embodiment of one of the early Castilles, perhaps even Salvant in a new form Wink Or even Gyvann. Wish we knew more about the super-advanced AI they had then...

Okay so i have been living a lot on shuffled but one of my current theroies about this card it that the Djinn was created to counter act a possibly worse threat / another threat - one thing about shuffled that has really got to me is the email from Garnet which states that if we can solve the message he will explain all - and that Mr kiteways involvement - am I way off the mark here?

Guin: Your not way off mark at all, despite all the crap spec which has been going round here recently, yours has some sense and sustinance.

I have no doubt that the Djinn worm was this particular prank. And if not, thats TWO major security stunts that Sente has pulled. Perhaps we should ask Scarlett if she knows anything about it. Like, if he won an prize for it, there will probably be some kind of trophy. She may give us a little information that will help with "Shuffled" and with the story line.

i'm sure we'd be able to tell her some stuff that would make kurt have a little more sympathy for her illegal activities. although what has she actually done thats been illegal?

hmmmm, is this because she has found out some things about him that she didn't like, or because she doesn't want him to find out what she knows?

so who did? who has the cube now? if V has it (which we only have vague circumstantial evidence to suggest he does) then how did he get it if the 4 robbers he set up didn't get it? did he use them as a distraction?

again, if its not a large group then we should be able to track down a few suspects, but we also need motives. the 3p and the recons are the only ones we've suspected so far, but do they have expert programmers in their ranks?

rach =)

I could be wrong, but wasn't V one of the four robbers? I was under the impression that it was Monica Grand (K), V, Bernardo Holyoke(Q) and Claire Castille(C).

To me, this suggests that V himself might have been a dupe of some superior who set up all four of them. Maybe there was some other team that stole the Cube just before V and company came into the picture, and the four of them are just a diversion meant to send us all down the wrong path?

I'm not saying V doesn't have it, just that it seems unlikely since it was already gone by the time he arrived with the others to steal it. His bosses at 3P probably know more about it than he does, no?

I could only assume that their efforts helped whoever stole the Cube. By killing that guard, they possibly let the other group in, in front of them. While Claire was working on the security system that had already been hacked, they might have stolen the cube and gotten out.

[spec]I think Caine did it. I think he wants to turn the Cube into a guitar and wail on it Very Happy[/spec]

I emailed Scarlett, telling her that perhaps she should consider talking to Kurt a little more seriously, as he might have more sympathy for her, illegal activity and all, than she might think.

All I got was the auto-respond, though...
