What the heck did he say, though?? Wink

And finally, Shunyata's response:

Shogen asked "Why does the enlightened man not stand on his feet and
explain himself?" He also said, "It is not necessary for speech to come
from the tongue."

And the answer is ....

If the feet of enlightenment moved, the great ocean would overflow;
If that head bowed, it would look down upon the heavens.
Such a body has no place to rest....

Dang! I get a response from shunyata and find that I am not the only one...
Oh well, here it is for everyone to look over. He seems to be big into mysticism

to me

Zen is like a man hanging by his teeth in a tree over a precipice. His
hands grasp no branch, his feet rest on no limb, and under the tree
another man asks him, 'Why did Bodhidharma come to China from the West?'
If the man in the tree does not answer, he misses the question, and if he
answers, he falls and loses his life. Now what shall he do?

EDIT: It seems that I was too quick to post. I googled what shunyata told me and found a page with buddhist writings here:http://klein.zen.ru/english/Mumonkan.htm
so I responded with the 'response': "(In such a predicament) though your eloquence flows like a river, it is all to no avail. Even if you can explain all of the Buddhist sutras, that also is useless. If you can rightly answer the question, you walk the road of killing the living and reviving the dead. But if you cannot answer, you should wait for ages and ask Maitreya, the future Buddha."

From your link -

"Those who have entered the gate are no family treasures"

From Kevin's response about his parents -

"How cruel are the parents who riches only prize. No parents of mine,
those people."

Has Kevin entered the gate?

Kokushi called Oshin three times. His tongue fell to the ground (from talking too much). Oshin answered three times and revealed his harmony with the Tao. Echu, getting old and lonely, attempted even to hold the cow's head down to feed on the grass. Oshin did not trouble to show his Zen, for his satisfied stomach had no desire to eat. When the nation is prosperous, everyone is too proud (to eat plain food), now just say who offended which one?

When prison canga is iron and has no hole,
(Echu's) followers have neither peace nor rest.
When you intend to uphold the teaching of Zen,
You must climb a mountain of swords with bare feet.

*racks brain for any zen references*

Uhh...what is the sound of one hand clapping?

..cla?

Hmmm...sent Shunyata and short e-mail.

Wondered if sucking up to him could me an actual reply...but he'll probably have some witty zen comeback

Now that I think about it, that would be great around campus

>Haha, freak!

>But what is a freak but one who comprehends more said the Zen master

Iono...

NO reply from burke either...

what other names do we have?

When this gets large enough to need a refernce Thread:

The Cyphers: mysterious group. There is a debate about what type of beings they are. Current speculation is "not human."

Kevin: male. cypher # 75. webmaster for the Cyphers, most recent to be a cypher. e-mail kevinSPLATstudiocypher.com

Shunyata: male. cypher #??. Called "Boss's Pet" by Kevin. Has responded to e-mails with Zen Koans. Has tattoos. e-mail: shunyataSPLATstudiocypher.com

Burke: female. Cypher #??. Supports Kevin's point of view. e-mail (no response yet, possibly burkeSPLATstudiocypher.com)

Whoa. He used that term? I know you guys didn't pay attention to what I said about Kevin Smith the first time, but seriously... One Hand Clapping is a weekly column on his entertainment website. http://www.moviepoopshoot.com/onehand/index.html . Look for yourself.

I think I'm gonna shoot these guys an email with View Askew references just for fun.

Will: Male. Not a Cypher, will be handling the webmasterSPLATstudiocypher.com. Knows nothing and should be told nothing.

Lane: ?

huh? Who used what term...I was just trying to think of the most zen-like thing I could say....

Isn't that one of the dialogues between the student and the master

Student says something and master responds "what is the sound of one hand clapping"

I figure it's either cla or a vague whooshing noise

Smile

wait....who's kevin smith?

...and Lane?

did I miss a page or something?

A very yong boy wants to go get a Koan from the master and is refused for a while. Eventually they allow the child to go see the master the way the adult students do.
The Master gives the boy "what is the sound of one hand clapping?" as his meditation ... the child keeps coming back with different things ... what he can hold in his hand, the sounds he hears from other things... eventually after many answers and such he finally realizes the answer is ... nothing.

I tried emailing Shunyata and got an email bounce back, so I emailed webmaster@ telling them I got a bounce and got this:

Quote:

Hi, Adam.

Thanks for letting me know. Our hosting provider had some routing
problems that affected our website and email. Everything should be fixed
now, so please let me know if it happens again.

Thanks!
-- Will

So Will has officially taken over the webmaster position while Kevin is 'in the field'

Resent my email to Shunyata, haven't heard back yet, will post my email and response if I get one.
