I'm interested in doing the whole Wakeful Agent thing, but can't do Paypal (no credit card/checking account).

Anyone know if they take other forms of payment?

I don't see any other options, but they've got a contact address, ask them maybe?

Guess I'll post the email for completeness.

Quote:
The Cypher's first case is right around the corner! To celebrate, we are offering a special preregistration price of $5.99 for everyone who wants to participate in our premiere multi-player novel. Hurry, this offer won't last long!

Preregistrants receive all the benefits of Wakeful Agent status but at a reduced price! You can preregister now at http://www.studiocypher.com/studio/join.

The first Wakeful Agent exclusive content will debut on the website May 1st, with more to follow in the coming weeks.

However, there is new content to experience right now! Kevin has expanded the Cyphers training sessions. The new training section explains how computers encode messages as well as ways to discover secrets that may be hidden inside web pages. We suggest you check out the training sessions even if you aren't new to multi-player novels, as Kevin has placed some important Cypher history in the solutions!

Enjoy!

Well, I emailed them yesterday, explaining the situation, and here's the response I got:

right ok, I'm guessing I'm missing something here but that's nothing new.

You guys pay $6 to sign up for the first case. I don't

What extra priveliges do you have over me? Can I not participate in the puzzle at all? Can I only watch what is happening but not help out?

I'm all a bit confused, Does anybody know?

Cheers
Forg

We'll find out in a few days, but $6 for the introductory story seems like a pretty fair price for a sampler... if I don't like it, that $6 isn't going to break me.

I think it was Forgery who once said:

The exact details of the relationship between Wakeful Agents and Other Agents isn't totally clear, but there's some info about it in the IRC chat
http://www.studiocypher.com/studio/chat.html.

My reading is that Wakeful (paying) agents are the only ones who may receive physical objects and interact with the Cyphers (in-game characters). But Agents can still work on puzzles and access at least some of the information at the Cyphers www site.

So you'd need to be a paying player to receive a secret decoder ring from Lane, or to talk with him on the phone, but you'd still be able to pitch in on solving puzzles, etc. via the forums.

I'm glad to hear that they're working on alternate forms of payment. It might be fun to be able to give an episode as a gift, for example. Maybe I'd provide StudioCypher with the recipient's email address, and they'd send them the welcome message, gather her/his contact info, etc.. I'm also a little concerned about security. The sad fact is, once money is involved, they (Studio Cypher) have to start worrying about legal issues, refunds, implied contracts and warranties, privacy, etc..

I typed this out before, but my computer decided to fag up on me. I'll try to remember the right points...

What was implied by the premium content that Wakeful Agents recieve is that their "cases" are in actuality real ARGs that have no connection to them on the outside. Someone can stumble upon one of them and play it, never hearing of what Cypher is. What you get as a member is this overlaying story which connects these seemingly unrelated games into a huge storyline over the months. Along the way, you of course get those physical objects and interactions with Cypher characters, but it's still more about that story. An interactive novel.

At least that's what it seemed like to me. It sounds totally cool to me. I don't think I've ever cared this much about an ARG before. Err... not that it's been a real long time or anything, but I got into this stuff around the time of Our Colony, and nothing has really caught my interest. Perplex City is all UK, and I got left behind in Last Call Poker because I was away for a couple weeks. All the indie projects (City of Domes, some journal based games) fell apart.

This one, assuming enough people help them finance, could turn out to be really good. Just gotta wait three more days for it to start. Very Happy

Tune in next time when I tell part 2 of my life story. >_>

GMTA.

I sent them a note this morning asking about the possibility of setting up a means to purchase 'gift' subscriptions. I'd like to be able to give them as prizes in the MUD game I play. Unfortunately, I can't figure out a way to do that right now except have the recipient make a new account at SC, provide me with the ID and password, then me pop over, log onto that account and then make the payment. Of course, then the giftee would have to go back and change his/her password.

Rather cumbersome.

Okay, update on the payment thing:

Will from Studio Cypher wrote:

Thanks for your interest in The Cyphers!

We are now set up to take checks and money orders (made out to Studio
Cypher, LLC) at:
PO Box 312
Clear Creek, IN
47426

We haven't yet integrated this with the site, so you'll have to reference
your user ID and whether or not you want physical items on the check.
Alternatively, you can include a printout of your order confirmation page
with the check.

Enjoy!

Really? Well, back when I was following things, everyone in England had gotten those cards, and I was realizing that I wouldn't get anything in the states... so I just dropped it.

Gift subscriptions are coming, too

That's a very good idea, Synch!

We'll set up a way to gift subscriptions after the Wakeful Agent content
is up (so sometime next week).

Enjoy!

They are certainly responsive to player needs and suggestions. That has to be a good sign.

regards

(edit: They also changed the email addy on my account at my request, even though you cannot do it on the website. Very helpful, very responsive.)
