[NEWS] Wave 3 release Confirmed - 6th April Well, under some considerable pressure from certain circles (read: the crazies in IRC chat) I contacted MindCandy via their handy-dandy telephamajig and basically asked about the And So it Begins event and whether or not that signified the full release of Wave three or was some advance special/shop privalige/crazy hallucination. Well the guy on the other end was happy enough to confirm to me that:
As of April 6th, Wave 3 should be available everywhere
And yes that quite probably includes Firebox etc. So Hooray for all that then!
EDIT: Phoned back to ask about the distributions, whether wave 3 would be available seperately etc... They said they couldn't comment yet but that there'd be an announcement soon enough. And no Ollie, I will not dress up as a Pizza Delivery Guy, sneak into MCHQ and find out the sekrit details like that. I've told you before, it's a ridiculous plan. (Though the pizzas you sent were great)

I had a brief (but friendly) exchange of emails with Firebox today in which they made with the wide-eyed innocence and said they wouldn't hear from Mind Candy until the actual day. The strongest they'd say was "fingers crossed" some time this week.
The phrase "the Mind Candy guys keep their cards very close to their chests (literally)" was used.
Without brat-sampson doing a Paxman on them, I would have suspected the 6th was a limited release and people like Firebox were having to wait until Friday. But "available everywhere" sounds pretty unambiguous...

Clarification, in response to an email I sent them:
Quote:
Each pack will contain a mixture of cards from the 194 wave 1, 2 and 3 cards.
The limited run of Wave 3 only packs will contain only wave 3 cards.
So if you only want wave 3, you'll probably need to wait.

I just noticed these for sale on Deck Boosters:
Perplex City Card Pack Wave 3
Perplex City Card Packs Wave 3 - 4 Packs
Perplex City Card Packs Wave 3 - 12 Packs
All are expected to be in stock on April 5th.
Seems too good to be true, based on what we've been hearing.
Anyone local want to call them?

Hmm, that sounds unlikely. I think I'll be waiting for Firebox.

I just did - they're waiting to hear whether the packs are wave 3 or wave 1/2/3 themselves from their wholesalers and will ring me when they know.
From what they said about getting a lot in stock, I strongly suspect it's the mixed packs.
They're aiming to send out as fast as they can within the rules
Sounded nice people. I think Firebox may have just lost my business.
Edit: yup, mixed packs.

I like the way that the release date matches the week that my student loan comes in...

Sounds like fate to me. I can feel it in my spec.

As a minority voice, I'm quite pleased they are making waves 1 and 2 available still. Bear in mind, there's an awful lot of us americans who don't have such sweeping access to many many cards, and so as buyability improves here, it would be nice if older cards would still be available to newer players. I fFinally hooked one of my older fFriends just yesterday, in fFact. And I was like "Boy did you get in at the right time!"
Naturally I realize not everyone is so thrilled. I know. I get it. you gotta buy how many more packs to get how many of the same cards? gah! I understand. I'm saying, tho, try and see the good side fFrom our perspective as well.
Ok, resume your ranting

So, I think all the suppliers I've spoken to have either confirmed that the packs will be mixed, or haven't been able to confirm either way. None of them have been able to say whether they will be mixed per pack in the box or by cards within the pack.
That being likely the case, I was wondering what people who had most/all of the cards were planning to do? An even distribution would mean that even buying 3 full boxes (£240) would be unlikely to net all the wave 3 cards. Is anyone planning to 'bite the bullet' and shell out for a box even if 2/3 of the cards you'll already have?

Speaking personally? No.
Scott: I can entirely see the potential benefits for newer players, and the US market, and some other groups of players. I think that in general, the response hasn't been particularly rant-y. Now, I can't definitely answer why this is the case - that the people who will be most aggrieved at this turn of events (aka "the players who have thus far spent the most money on collecting the cards") are not complaining.
Maybe they are suffering from the shock of being handed a virtual repeat performance, despite previous assurances, of the Wave 2 release, which also penalised the people who had gotten involved earlier and had already collected Wave 1 in it's entirety.
Perhaps they are waiting for the big announcement on release day with regards to

- emphasis mine. Once this opportunity to pre-order packs, for delivery "several weeks later" has been explained, perhaps then there will be more "ranting" - from the limited information that has been given in that Sentinel release, we know that these supplies will be (follow up questions are simply my own wish-list):-
A - Limited. Does this mean that if you don't get your "Wave 3 only" order in on the 6th then you don't get one? How is limited is "limited"? First 100 packs? First 1000? Being limited also means that people will need to pay out a larger amount up front in order to take advantage of this offer, rather than being able to spread the cost by buying a few packs a week, etc.
B - Pre-order. After waiting patiently (in most cases) since November, lets face it, "pre-order" isn't a phrase that anyone wants to hear.
C - Several weeks later. Personally, a confirmed date would be rather...um..."nicer".
We'll see...
Jamie

Excluding inflation of the silvers, I'd bet it's cost-effective to buy all your cards on eBay. The stack of duplicates that all of us must have is worth something, even if reds go for $0.25 or less. It does take the fun out of opening a package though. I'd bet individual Wave 3 cards show up really fast.
I'm waiting for the Wave 3 only packs, and hope that MC helps out the dedicated players by allowing us to purchase these sooner rather than later.

Indeed! I only ordered Wave 2 cards once--during the free packs deal through Firebox. Even that way, I didn't get a whole lot of Wave 2 packs and had a lot of gaps in my collection. But I bought the remainder of Wave 2 as singles on eBay for less than $20 (obviously excluding silvers!). I didn't get as many cards for that $20 as I would have if I'd ordered more packs...but I did get the cards I wanted rather than another big stack of Wave 1 reds and oranges that I just can't get rid of.
Honestly, opening a pack is only fun if you get something new out of it. Finding even more copies of Ishihara and Twisty Little Passages is not fun.

I think there is an element of Mind Candy shooting themselves in the foot here. I'm sure many people will resort to ebay to but their wave 3 cards, thus making profits for some pretty dreadful people who charge £2.00 postage for a card that weighs the same as a postcard (for example). I personally dont mind buying some extra wave 1 and 2 since i have given away just about all my duplicates anyway. Plus trading is fun too.
