I've gone along that line because :

1 I don't think an anagram of the countries is possible as there are too many ambiguous answers
2 New Caledonia has the highest reserve of nickel in the world
3 All the countries listed have connections with nickel reserves or production
4 Mother Tongue - Nickel can be used in body jewellery eg tongue rings
5 Go native - Von's Clue - Native Indians used nickel to make instruments and the leader of the Indians on old Us coins were made of nickel.

Oh well at least it was a different approach thanks for trying, I would try the others though just to make sure as I would have expected nickel reserve or reserves to be the answer instead of just nickel.

Thanks again

Another idea?

Moving on from the last idea, how about :-

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Cyclones or Hurricanes? A tongue is an expression used in cyclonic vocabulary, mother tongue could therefore be a cyclone as in a natural phenomena, and going along the native clue from Von, the word 'hurricane' originates from the name of the native Ameriindian storm god Huracan.

Worth a try? Still thinking outside the box !

i think the mineral idea is a good path. it most likely relates to the background image. maybe it is an extreme close up of the mineral/resource/thing in question?

How about
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
uranium ?

Most of the countries seem to have this too, again not sure about the link but I think it must be something to do with an element that each country possesses

I like where this is going - French Guyana seems to be big with the gold, for example, and Mauretania has oil - but as a Brit with Spanish ancestry, I'm not sure what my two countries could claim as their main resource. And what about the US and Russia, both so huge they have pretty much everything?

Nevertheless, I think this is a good route to take.

Most places also seem to have had a revolution or a civil war or both - but an awful lot of countries not on the card can also claim that (France most notably, on the revolution front at least, and maybe Bosnia for the civil war). Edit - now I think of it, someone mentioned revolutions etc earlier...

The problem with all minerals is the absence of Australia and Canada.

Almost all of the worlds minerals (and I believe ALL of the majors) can be found in significant quatities there.

It's a feature of their geology.

If you do want to pursue it - look for the smaller countries. I know New Caledonia has Phosphate (guano) - it was famous for it, and I believe they may have Base Metals too.

When I was working on politics as a theme (earlier), I looked at (but discarded without entering):

Revolution - France is missing
Constitution - The UK doesn't have one
Parliament - Australia/Canada does
Commonwealth - Some are members, some are not
Kyoto - US is in

You could look at things like treaties though - or maybe membership of the League of Nations etc.

And Iceland has the oldest of all.

While IIRC, Somalia currently has pretty much no functioning government at all. So if it is something politicial it would have to be about the breakdown or absence of government at some period in their history, or about civil war. But I'm not convinced the Dutch or Austrians ever had one of those. Nevertheless, I think I'll try Marianne and see if it works.

Edit: it didn't, of course.

Something I've noticed with many cards is that there is reference on the reverse of the card to the answer. Doing a quick google of some of the words on there led me somewhere interesting. For those of you, like me, that didn't know apolyton.net is a civilization (sid meier's game) discussion site. From what I can see not all of the countries in Civ are included on this card but it could be a route to look at. I'm sure that wars and domination have been discussed in some depth on this forum. I've been locked out at the moment
Also an Auger is a very heavy duty 'drill bit' sometimes used for oil drilling. But there's little or no oil connection between the nations listed.
I didn't really get anything of note for clegg lane or rambler tower.

I think that Civ may be the best lead, and seeing as everything else has been tried I thought that there's no harm in trying something different.

Thanks,

Mad

New Ideas

I've been working on the basis that this is a visual puzzle.
I've tried 2 approaches.

1.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Map Projections
Assume Von's 'go native' clue refers to the map projection.
The native projection is a globe.
I shaded in all the shown countries on a 3D globe, hoping some image or message would show, but no joy.
I'd like someone to try this on a transparent globe, if anyone has one ?

2.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Super-Continent
Hawaii excluded beacause it wasn't part of the original land mass, New Caledonia included because, unusually for that part of the world, it was ?
Tried transposing the shaded countries onto a map of Pangea from http://www-sst.unil.ch/research/plate_tecto/index_files/Pangea.gif
The result, shown here http://www.pbase.com/skaliwag/image/60286939, looked a bit like a face, in what I thought was Aboriginal style.
This would also fit with both Von's clue and the card title (look up the Aboriginal version of the creation of the Earth).
Tried 'aborigine' and 'aboriginal', but no luck.

Sanity is a delicate thing.
