I won't spoilerize it, since it isn't correct, but I can confirm that ABORIGINES has also been tried. The lack of that pesky 'S' has been our downfall in the past, so I had to try it! Razz

Bit of wild thinking...tried...
Morgan's Madagascan sphinx moth
!
The moth predicted by Darwin necessary to get pollen from the comet orchid in Madagascar, many years later discovered, proving him right. It apparently has the longest proboscis (yes I realise that commony means a nose, but is also the name of a feeding tube in insects which seems to be widely called a 'tongue' in butterflies and moths) for body length. Pun on mother?...moth(er)?...mother of a tongue? Couldn't see any relation to the choice of countries unless some wild anagram was there somewhere!
Anyway
Nope!
This card is real odd. If not an anagram (and that looks doubtful (but not ruled out) for the various reasons already mentioned) I just cant see any connection that doesnt include missing countries.

If you hold the card so that you can read the writing the right way up (i.e.portrait orientation) it is possible to make out a skull like formation in the background design. The eye sockets are right at the top under the Y of CITY and the M of Mother, the top of the head is cut off by the title bar and the skull is turned slightly to the right with the mouth just above Laos.

I think I am getting desperate!

I have tried ana and ama without success as well as pre-nostratic.

Is mad caesar onto something with his Apolyton/Clegg clue from the back of the card? There is an awful lot of stuff about Apolyton on the web.

Holding the card and looking for the skull the top of (or East) or Russia looks like a storm troopers helmet! Very Happy

Otherwise still no inspiration!

Ok, coming from someone who is aboriginal, no, aboriginal is not a language, the aboriginal people of australia are like the tribes of africa. Each tribe has a different language and we all have different name for our tribes. The name aboriginal is just to catoregise us all, just like calling every caucasian white even though everyone comes from most countries...

Anyway, that was my pc version, just call us black fellas.

My 2p

1. I don't think it's an anagram, too many letters, too many combinations, I guess you could make up almost any answer from the possible letters you end up with.

2. I don't think the answer is that old, indeed if the the fact that Hawaii isn't there yet Alaska is, and it's not a miss-print, then the date of the answer is 1959.

3. I can't see how it's languages as the borders are a bit sharp, languages seem to flow around with no regard for who's next door.

Apart from that, I haven't got a clue.

It seems that people are happy that the UK is a country?!

Im happy to suggest that Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and England are to be classed as seperate countries.

Ok, it may be the only cluster of countries that border each other, but I have no reason to think why they should be classed as UK and Ireland.

This will also give a few more countries and languages to look into.

Have you tried swear words in different languages?

Dont expect them to be right, but may help ease some frustration!

The UK is just one country first because it is, and secondly because the card does not have any lines separating England, Wales and Scotland.

I don't think we are overthinking this card - there have been over 1000 wrong answers submitted but nobody's solved it yet. I'm glad that it appears that you actually have to solve the card to get the right answer rather than being able to guess it a la Broadside.

I agree that it the solution probably isn't an anagram, but still hold out hope that it involves a logical ordering of the countries.

I wouldn't read too much into the missing off of Hawaii - Eritrea only came into existence in 1993, for example. There are a few islands missing. Equatorial Guinea has its capital on an island but that is missing (it is only one of two countries that is mainly on the mainland but the capital is on an island - can you name the other?).
