Dont you just love tangents
Laughing

I dont mean to offend, but I really think we need to explain our answers.

Fair enough that people have been working hard trying to find a solution, but by showing how you came about with it may really help in new thought processes, and prompt someone to find the key to this damn card.

I cant honestly fathom how some of the recent solutions have been worked out, and dont really want to read pages and pages of wrong answers.

Enough ranting - carry on!

Going back to the elemental theme has anyone tried

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
gold or gold reserve(s)

Interestingly Canada does not hold a reserve of it but the other countries do, as do many others not mentioned.

I am really struggling to believe that only these countries on the map have something in common, I'm sure the connection must be something else but I'm lost on what it could be and why only these countries are shown.

Hope someone solves it soon, it's difficulty is in the fact that it can't be brute forced or solved with computers like Shuffled or The Thirteenth Labour so it's going to take an inspired guess to solve it !

I've just found an article about

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
vanishing languages and language extinction

Maybe this could be related to these countries in some way ?

I like all these left field ideas and so often the solution has been something other than the line we were following. Despite that I've still a feeling it's an anagram. I've looked repeatedly at the names of countries in english and their official language. Also capitals cos you get the vital w. I've also got a feeling that the answer could be the name of a country in its own language. There are a few arab countries which come near to 29 letters, and j's are popular. I haven't tried mother teresa's home language cos I can't come up with an explanation other than the simple one. My open university spanish course has reached the chapter on languages so a lot about euskera, but also the wonderfully named bable, which is the language of asturias. Sorry if I should have spoilerised any of this, but I didn't think it was worth it.

I am inclinde to feel that this is either:

a) an anagram; or
b) like Earth's Destiny - where the obvious part of the card (the countries) actually have nothing to do with the answer

If however it IS relate to the countries, it is probably easier to consider the countries in pairs, rather than as a whole, i.e. if there IS a relevant factor, it is:

In the US but not Canada; or
In Spain but not Portugal; or
In Brazil but not Argentina; or
Not in South Asia at all

etc.

My only other suggestion besides the way-out there "Romulan" is speaking in tounges, or "glossolalia".

Chimera,
That sounds like part of a riddle to me! For example "In Alaska, but not in Hawaii", meaning there is an A, L, S or K in the answer, but there is *no* H, W or I... Hmmm Confused

**edit**
Oops! Strike the A in Alaska because there's one in Hawaii... So, out of that pair, we'd have L, S and K to work with so far.

**more editing**
In the United States but not Canada = U N ITE D ST A TES
In Spain but not Portugal = S PA IN
In Brazil but not Argentina = B RA Z I L

I'd probably try those the other way round, since Portugal colonized Brazil and Argentina was colonized by Spain - I reckon that makes the links stronger and the pairs more obvious.

Which would give B,Z&I in one case and S&P in the other.

Could it be a simple odd one out question whether looking at the reserves or languages or anything else - maybe the answer is the name of 1 of the countries that shouldn't be on the card, or another way to look at it is is there a country that should be on this card but isn't, but I think the former would be easier......besides between us 29 or 30 guesses depending on your take on it should be easily manageable to prove either way.

Just need it to unlock now.

There's a deal of lateral thinking going on here! I was enthusiastic about colonisation until I saw France, Italy, Portugal etc were missing. I am still trying to link in early languages but I am beggining to think that it's the wrong way to go.
Von's clue is confusing me, too.
I have found one intruiging reference to 'Geographic tongue' or
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Glossitis

but it's not that either.
Anagrams are proving difficult because of the J or Js and K.
I wondered about rainfall and female politicians and feldspar and foreign translations of 'mother' and 'tongue' but to no avail.
Sorry, a load of negatives here but it's all part of the elimination process.

If you go back a couple of pages, you could have saved your attempts. Wink

While playing with the anagrams again, I can come up with the words The Embassy Language (with a few letters left) so tried
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
diplomacy

but to no avail.

::double sigh::

From Von's hint, I thought the emphasis might be on the word native. From the dictionary definition 6. (of chemical elements, esp. metals) found naturally in the elemental form; not chemically combined as in an ore.

Tried Salt & sodium chloride. Both wrong

This may have been mantioned already, but I thought I'd mention it too as it was one of my first thoughts. Have all these countries been invaded(Discounting by the Nazis and Roman Empire)? Also do they have royal families and share any ancestors... i.e Tsar Nicholas was Queen Vic's nephew etc.

Failing that, this is interesting... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_list_of_Non-Self-Governing_Territories
