[Unsolved?] #244 - Silver - [Star Set] - Syzygy Cube

The text says
"Can you solve this cube so that each face spells out six words (three horizontally, three vertically)?"

And the rest is pretty self explanatory, if you are not able to read the letters from the scan, I'll be happy to transcribe them...

i've got these letters as a transcription,

(top left face l-r)
NET
RZA
AED
(top right face l-r)
PAB
PYO
NBT
(lower face top right - bottom left)
NOW
AYE
LED
(upper face bottom left-top right)
BAA
AYE
SEE
(bottom left face l-r)
WES
ESE
TDS
(bottom right face l-r)
TAP
OGE
TUK

although since the key to solving the rubiks cube seems to be in matching up the orientation of the letters, this may not be much help! so bear in mind the N's could be Z's (although on the top left face the N in NET looks different to the Z in RZA, which would be a very stumpy N) and the M's could be W's (damn stupid font, i chose W cos i dont think Ms should have diagonal 'bookend' lines, but thats just me, some fonts do do Ms that way) and i suppose the U could be a C but itd be a very funny shaped one if it was

i also tweaked the contrast on the bottom left face cos i couldnt see the letters properly on the scan, still not great but hope it helps

there's a list of 3 letter words here
and just in case thats not exhaustive, another one here but we can rule out any words containing the letters F, H, I, J, Q, V or X cos as far as i can see, we dont have any on our cube.

rach =)

Okay, so what if you think laterally back to the time when you had a Rubik's Cube as a kid and you turned one of the faces part-way around and pried off the corner piece, causing all of the rest of the pieces to come apart. I know you did this--whether it was because you wanted to figure out how it worked or because you were stuck and wanted to just take it apart and put it back together with the correct colors, I'm sure you did it.

Anyway, what if we did something like that with this cube? If I remember correctly, there are a couple of ways to [randomly] reassemble the [color] cube that made it impossible to solve. Likewise, there may be multiple ways to reassemble a torn-apart cube, only one of which is "real," but the orientation of the letters should help that situation quite a lot.

So, I guess I should try to find 27 sugar cubes and a marker. Wink

It gives you an excuse to dig out your old rubiks cube, and scribble on it!

Processes of elimination

Right, taking each side...

1/ It's not a Z, it's an N. I know this because my dictionary doesn't have any three letter words where the middle one is Z. Correct me if I'm wrong.

2/ Because of the "Y" sides, I speculate that words can be repeated on the cube. (There are less than six words in my dictionary that would fit)

3/ All this speculation ignores letter orientation as I'm not sure how that works (or at least can't manipulate it in my head!)

4/ In order to make the words below, we've got the selection of start/end letters as follows. I might do an exhaustive search to see what combinations are possible here..?

AAAAAA
EEEEEEEEEE
OOO
U
B
D
P
R

So...
Quote:

Grid:

XXX
XNX
XXX

The possible words that can go in are:

AND
END
ONE

Quote:

Three of these:

XXX
XYX
XXX

aye
bye
dye
eye
rye

Quote:

XXX
XSX
XXX

asp

It has to be:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

XXX
ASP
XXX

the 'P' can't be the last letter for the other centre letters.

Anyway , hopefully that's a start.

I'm trying that method now, old rubik's cube, letters pasted on, pieces everwhere Smile ,, i knew my old cube would come in handy one day. Very Happy

I think i've got it:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

BUS
ASP
TEA

SET
AGE
WON

SAD
ANO
POT

MAP
AYE
NET

ARK
DYE
DEN

EEL
BYE
BET

I used spugmeistress's list of 3 letter words, except for ANO,
which i got from dictionary.com :

ano
Ani \A"ni\or Ano \A"no\, n. [Native name.] (Zo["o]l.) A black bird of tropical America,
the West Indies and Florida (Crotophaga ani), allied to the cuckoos,
and remarkable for communistic nesting.

Has anybody else tried this yet ???

RIP one rubiks cube. Laughing Laughing

Step was working with a Rubik's cube last night - but that looks good! Though having 'ano' twice goes against my puzzle instincts.

Though, I'm curious as to how these answers are going to all be entered into the leaderboard thing or what have you...

Aye twice too (had to be, there are only 5 possibilities for the middle Y and 6 places).

Sure, but I suspect the riemann answer will be harder to explain again Wink

THe background of the card looks odd, is it a magic eye maybe?

Wow! That was (maybe) solved much faster than I'd imagined.

Not sure if this helps now, but if any of you programmers want to check that answer you might be able to modify this code to help.

http://freshmeat.net/projects/rubiks/

I have no programming skills whatsoever, so I'm not sure how hard it'd be, but I figured I'd throw it out there for you guys.
