being silver i think theres more to this than meets the eye....there is the picture (stained glass?) but also the letters/code on the edges.

i think this is gonna be fun!

Also chains, tulips (???) a lake during the evening and a stained glass window.

I was thinking the same but didn't think you could get red lilies. I'm not sure they are tulips though.

For some reason, I see this picture and think "Monet"... no idea why, it's just a hunch.

from what i can see on the card catalog, i'd say the flowers were orchids, although i could be wrong.
can't say i recognise the picture straight off, although i knew this would happen as it is *really* hard to research a picture if you dont know any information about it.

rach =)

There arent many different symbol types present, but they are matched in sets of two, so could be a code. I count 19 unique pairs, probably enough to be an alphabetic code, maybe a clue/sentence?

I'm leaning toward the flowers being Calla Lillies.

Most of the letter pairs begin with 'A' or 'B', and only a couple begin with 'U' or 'H', at a quick glance. Could *2* alphabets come into play for deciphering?

Since I can't find them anywhere else, I thought you might like a transcript of the letters around the window frame. Starting from the left side of the bottom 'ledge', going anticlockwise:

pz pu pe pu bz bz pb pp pz pp bb bb pa pr pb pr ha
uz ba uz ba bz ba bz bb ha ur bp ur bp br bp bu bp ha az uz bb bp
bz bz bu uu bp br bu bp bz uz bb bp bz bz bu uu bp br bu bz bz

tbh, I'm not sure whether the character I've written as p is a p, but I don't know what else it could be. I thought it was an a to start with, but then the other letters were clearly a's.

Ooh, shiny.

I agree that the flowers look like calla lilies. The frame looks like one I've seen of whalebones. The actual picture is the style of the Tiffany windows in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. R Grant? Duncan Grant was in the Bloomsbury group. R Grant makes me think of Russel Grant (British astrologer) or Richard E Grant who was in a TV series called the Home Farm Twins about Helen and Hannah. Feels like I'm going off tangent.

I'm 99% sure that they are Calla lillies - Zantedeschia aethiopica, also known as lily of the Nile.

EDIT: Maybe revise that percentage down a few points (the leaves aren't exactly right), but I haven't found anything closer. Callas are also known as arum lillies.

Here is an example of a Tiffany window with calla lillies. I also cecked out possible biblical scenes (Moses - the Nile - etc.) - L.C. Tiffany did loads of stained glass for churches but I haven't found anything yet with Moses as a baby. Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris also did religious scenes in stained glass.

It's possible. Monet didn't do anything quite like this, but on a basic level this is just a picture of water & lilies.[/u]

I could well be wrong but various webpages seem to imply that the red calla lily hybrid is fairly new. Don't know if anyone could clarify this because if it is true it may help to date the artist in question.

Well, I haven't found a starting date on a red Z. aethiopica, but have a look at this. Z. rehmannii is naturally colored, was widely used in hybridizing, was first described in 1883 and has leaves much like the ones on the card. Datewise, I reckon we're OK with Tiffany (1848-1933). Burne-Jones (1833-1898) and Morris (1834-1896) look iffy.

P.S. Yay! Centurion!
