Anyone got the piet interpreter working on XP?
If so can you do a "dummies" guide.
Cheers

I can't do you a "dummy's guide" but download and install the latest version of cygwin from http://www.cygwin.com. (about 60Mb of disk) - then run cygwin.bat from the installation directory, there should be a desktop icon to do this by now. You should get a command window with a dollar prompt.

From here, type mount to find out where in the filesystem your copy of piet might be. For example /cygdrive/c. Some commands such as dir and cd have the same syntax as they would have in Windows/MSDOS.

When you get to the directory with npiet.exe in it, you have to remember that this will not necessarily be in your path, so type
./npiet<return> to get the command options.

Hope this helps.

I've tweeked the colours on donxkey main image to match those used by the npiet interpreter. It gives the result that baf posted earlier.

From the cygwin bash shell change to the directory containing npiet.exe and main.png, and use the following command:
./npiet.exe -t main.png
If you also use the -tpic switch it produces a debug trace picture

I emailed dangermouse, partly in case he could help, partly cos i'd liked his website and had visited a friend in the same area, and partly cos I thought he'd be interested. He had noticed the upsurge in views, and was delighted to find out why. However the bad news is that he wouldn't have got any further than us with the card. He liked the game but has the good sense not to get sucked in.

Cheers Austin,

Got cygwin running but when I run npiet it displays this error message
*** pro magic mismatch detected.

Any help is much appreciated.

Interesting. I go away for 2 days and we make impressive progress! One of the first things I noticed was that the black squares don't actually serve to control the flow of the program.

I just realized something. The main program doesn't actually terminate. I didn't notice this before because I ran the program by hand the first time (the better to see what it was doing), and I just kind of assumed that the program halted when it reached the knob in the center, just like all the example programs. But now that I've got npiet working on my machine, I see that it keeps running, repeatedly asking for input. Now that I see this, it's easily explained. The knob isn't quite right to terminate the program. There's one side where the farthest extreme isn't bordered by black: the left side, where you come in.

I don't think this is significant. More likely, the person who devised this program made the same mistake that I did and thought that the program stopped in the knob. I say this because after exiting the knob, it starts behaving completely out-of-character, running into black bits and needing the CC register to choose its path and asking for input. But I note it here in case I'm wrong.

just an idea to persue, not got me anywhere yet, but in case it's worth considering ...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

If we are to sum the reds, we need to know how to interpret them. so, do the mini mosaics, numbered 1 to 9 show us combinations of reds that give us those values (reds change for every number) - work out the rules, apply to main mosaic = answer?

Just wondering if anyone has tried Vons hint line. If so what did he have to say? (would do it myself but need to top up the proverbial)

I guess we could be well beyond this hint but hey it could shed a brighter light on the card...... maybe to some kind of order...

JJ The hint line still isn't working for this card for me. The boys at PerplexCity are busy working on it (or at least they were on the 20th when they last emailed me!)

JayJay, and anyone else who has been checking the colours of the small numbered squares, I am having a little difficulty matching up the colours in 1_to_9_tiles.png with the colour palette. Particularly cyan and its light and dark shades don't seem to match exactly.

Please could someone confirm whether the 1 tile is

Code:
 C  Y                          Y DC
LC  Y     W  W       DC LC LC  Y LC
LC  Y        W                DY LC
LC DY        W    LM LM LM    LY DC
 C  Y        W       DM       DY LC
LC DY     W  W  W    DM       DM DC
LC  Y                DM DG  G DG DY
LC  Y LB  B LB  B LB  B LB LB LB LB
LC DR  R DR  R DR  R  R  R  R DR  R

and whether the 9 tile is
Code:
DC  Y                          Y  C
LC  Y LC LC DC     W  W  W    DY LC
DC  Y              W     W     Y LC
LC LY    LM LM LM  W  W  W     Y  C
LC DY       DM           W    DY LC
LC DY       DM     W  W  W     Y  C
DC DY       DM                DY LC
LC DY DB LB DB LB DB LB LB DB LB  C
LC LR DR LR DR LR DR DR DR LR DR DR

thanks!

Doublecross great work

I've rechecked mine and agree with your colour break down of tiles 1 and 9. This is the kind of thing I was lookin for to get these colours 100%. Cyan magenta and blue are very tricky colours to tell appart and your work has helped alot.

Any chance of posting tiles 2-8 in that text format? So that I can triple check mine and repost a upto date image. (hopefully with brass knobs on!)

Cheers

Justin

Thanks JayJay, but having a yet closer look and trying to 'run' the tile 1 / tile 9 combo, I've changed my mind about some squares on the right side of the 1 and the left side and bottom of the 9.

I now think the 1 tile is

Code:
 C  Y                          Y DC
LC  Y     W  W       DC LC LC  Y  C
LC  Y        W                DY  C
LC DY        W    LM LM LM    LY DC
 C  Y        W       DM       DY  C
LC DY     W  W  W    DM        M DC
LC  Y                DM  G LG DG DY
LC  Y LB  B LB  B LB  B LB LB LB LB
LC DR  R DR  R DR  R  R  R  R DR  R

and the 9 tile is
Code:
DC  Y                          Y  C
 C  Y  C  C DC     W  W  W    DY LC
DC  Y              W     W     Y LC
 C LY    LM LM LM  W  W  W     Y  C
C DY       DM           W    DY LC
 C DY       DM     W  W  W     Y  C
DC DY       DM                DY LC
 C DY  B LB  B LB  B LB LB  B LB  C
C LR DR LR DR LR DR DR DR LR DR DR

I'm reluctant to go blind looking at the other seven little tiles as I think the 1 and 9 are the only ones worth looking at.

I disagree with baf that running the 1 and 9 tiles doesn't do anything.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I get the program to loop the tile quite neatly twice and although it goes a little wrong at the last corner, it consistently pushes and pops a series of values. Although pops are technically discards, the sequence of 26 pops gives 14143212312312141121321214. I feel there is one short step left to convert this to words (or letters) but I'm b******d if I can find what it is.

Some questions.

and that a big image should be constructed with these tiless in. When we have such an image then we should run the program to see what we get.

This is not a guess. It runs far too smoothly for coincidence. The program visits every single colored segment, neatly avoiding all of the black parts and the numbers.

A colour block may be any shape and may have "holes" of other colours inside it, which are not considered part of the block.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Finally, my point:
Looking at the main grid and then at the number grids, it almost appears that there are adjancent color blocks within some of the number grids. Baf, I just wanted you to clarify that is does indeed avoid the number grids.

The second question for baf is, did you come up with the same color grid for the numbers as JayJay, again, if so it still avoids the number grids?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

What about the following words in the columns and rows of 1 and 9 (the sum of the "regular" reds):
One Direction Nine
--------------------
messenger N their
race S where
lest E those
echo W apple

Strong work on this one guys.
