So, wait. Has anyone actually figured this one out yet? (By which I mean, has anyone got the correct solution by any means other than guessing.)

I like this one better:

"There is no way of dealing with the Frenchman but to knock him down - to be civil to them is to be laughed at."

let me tell you a secret..

to summarise,

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
you're looking for a word, Nelson/trafalgar related, you won't find it in the book, you don't need to translate the flags At least one of the early listings was really helpful, (as is the card title) and the word itself has been mentioned on one of the early listings..

come on, you know you can do it!

I have a possible clue. It's been pointed out that the red-and-white-quartered flag on the right mast is in the wrong orientation, and that orientation is important in these codes. A mistake on the part of the puzzle scribe? Maybe not. From a description of the Popham code at http://www.atlasgeo.net/fotw/flags/xf~psf.html :

'For instance, the word "England" was represented by hoisting the flags 2-5-3, while the word "Man" is illustrated with an 4(inverted)-7-1 signal (an error in Wilson, as the flag should not be inverted).'

The 4 flag mentioned here is the red-and-white quartered one. So, I suspect that this error stems from the use of "Wilson" (by which is meant the book Flags at Sea by Timothy Wilson) as a source. Perhaps there is more in this book that will be useful in deciphering the flags.

I'm with ya, baf - I still have a few idea to work on. Damned if I'll just let this go "unsolved" even though the answer has be found.

OMG, this card has been kicking me for the past few weeks. I can't believe how easy it was. The clue stating that you won't find it in the books is what finally made it click for me. After that, it made sense that you don't have to interpret the flags, but a substitution is the answer. Smile

Cryptic clues from ego-maniacal first ten solvers aside, can we please just get somebody to post a spoiler'd solution to the gorram thing? Here, I've looked it over, and believe the answer to be
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
confides.

If that's right, somebody post confirmation that the aforementioned word is right. If it isn't right, please post the correct answer. Joke's a lot funnier when everybody gets it.
