[Puzzle] #156 - Blue - Going Dotty (Wave 4)

I'm unsure if I should even be doing this (even if it is only a couple of days before the release date). I don't want to be moaned at for this, so if you think it is not the 'done thing' please let me know and I will remove the topic or post straight away.

This Wave 4 card is now clearly visible on the Firebox page, hence me starting a topic on it. http://www.firebox.com/pic/p1082b.jpg

The card is in the Blue Pixel set and consists of 5 groups of coloured dots, three reading across the card and two reading vertically. In order, they are red, yellow, and black across; purple and blue down.
Any thoughts?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It looks like a puzzle in braille to me at first glance, but I'm not very knowledgeable in Braille so may well be wrong. It could also be similar to the W3 card "Noise" where you have to superimpose the different image parts

It looks to me that if the card was on its side, or upside down the dots would read something. i.e. The left most yellow dot cluster kinda looks like a upside down 'h'

Ha, I was wondering if/when someone would make this. Well, long as it's up and the card's fairly clearly visible...

I don't think it's Braille, though it looks very similar. There are some discrepancies, for example one out-of-line dot in the third row of the red dots, and a few clump-y bits that wouldn't work in Braille. I also can't seem to find anything that's either just top-right dot or that upside-down L shape (found right at the beginning of the red set) in Braille.

Yup, Agent Lex is right. I noticed the discrepancies mostly in the yellow section, the dots are clumped closer together and not in a straight pattern.

I was doing more research on this last night, and the red dots (the clearest and most likely to be braille) don't make any sense reading them normally in braille. [note - braille experts might want to give it a go themselves!!!]

Overlapping the coloured sections could be the key here, or maybe we are looking at another obscure programming language? Mind you it is only a blue card...

Might just be several magic eye pictures layered on top of each other.

My guess is - stack all the dots one on top of the other, letting the colors blend. The dots will then make a picture.

They say great minds think alike. I did just that with the 3 lots we can see enough of (red, orange and blue) at 50% opacity, and got this. Looks like it's starting to form something...

I rotated the blue dots to the right, as you'd normally rotate a card that's printed in landscape. The perspective of the card photo means they might not all line up quite right.

Do you suppose that it might have to do with the dots that overlap? Or perhaps only those that don't?

I can't wait to get this card and try some things out... Smile

I got my wave 4 cards this morning, including this one.

Turn the card on its side and reading across the face in UV ink is:

RUBIESDIAMONDSEMERALD
STOPAZAMETHYSTSSAPPHI
RESRUBIESDIAMONDS
EMER
ALDSTOPAZAMETHYSTSSAP
PHIRESRUBIESDIAMONDS
E
MERALDSTOPAZAMETHYSTS
SAPPHIRESRUBIESDIAMON
DS
EMERALDSTOPAZAMETHY
STSSAPPHIRESRUBIESDIA
MONDS
EMERALDSTOPAZAME
THYSTSSAPPHIRESRUBIES

Not sure what it means, but seems to relate to text on card 30 (End of the Line) which is a quote from Gyvann and is superfluous to the puzzle on that card:

"Precious are the stones my children, precious that which is dug from the earth. Precious are the rubies, the diamonds, the emeralds and the topaz. I held fast to the amethysts. They mingled them with sapphires, so I threw them both from me. Only one choice remained and from then nothing was right. My children I did not despair, as you must not despair. A quadruped appeared before me, its middle leg held proudly forward. I turned my back to it and strode forward. But after only 20 ammot the light was upon me. Precious, my children, is the light."

i took all 3 pictures, and what was visibal with the other 2 colors on the card's side, and tried to put them together, but with no advail, i didn't have the programe you do agent lex. mind giving that a go. i tried to stick all 5 pics together, as a .gif, and again no luck. >>ran them as a string together, and i see "people" or "perplex" then again, i didn't have the bigger picture, just the small firebox one.

Well they are all birth stones. Repeated in different orders. Only six of them though, rather than all twelve. They also are not the most precious, so it's not related to that (opal is the most precious, diamond second and pearls third).

Ruby - July
Diamond - April
Emerald - May
Topaz - November
Amethyst - February
Sapphire - September

This might be a rotten trail but it's the first thing that sparked to mind when I read this post. I don't actually have the card yet, myself. Probably has nothing to do with anything, but Garnet (as in Garnet Reed, puzzle scribe, CRT member, and junior fellow of cryptography for PXC Academy) is a January birthstone. Probably just a red herring tho.

Haven't thought about possible meaning for the on-and-off bolding yet...

Everything except EMERALDS and AMETHYSTS is definitely in a bolder font...curiously Gyvann's quote separates sapphires and amethysts from the other gems.

Oh, and in the top-right corner of the card reading upwards are the numbers:

2-111221111112-4 reading upwards
2-2232-4 reading downwards

I haven't had time to study them in detail but I've found these types of numbers appear on 13 wave 4 cards so far - definitely seems to be another meta-puzzle.
