Rhygsveldt Nibbles at Levenay Empire with Local Flavours

Haute couture designer Raph Rhygsveldt of fashion house Flattery is seeing success with its bold new direction with apparel and accessories. Although Flattery is a boutique house compared to giant Isabella Levenay, analysts think the smaller house has taken as much as 4% of the larger fashion designer's market share over the past year. Flattery's secret: "We've been working harder to produce clothing that is art that you wear," said Rhygsveldt. "An important element has been taking the things we find around us and discovering how we can introduce that into what we produce."

As a result of Rhygsveldt's approach, Flattery's designs rely heavily on natural local materials, "to build a connection between the wearer and the world," Rhygsveldt said. "I send my people into the farther reaches of the city, and then we use what they find there."

For example, the tall, wide grasses from the plains just south of Catbite might be woven into a handbag or even crafted into a light vest; the blush that gives the gladstone its name might be polished into pebbles and used to make buttons or jewellery; the green-tipped feathers of the ducks that nest in the Quagendiep Wetlands have been used (albeit sparingly) as trim for anything from boots to blouses.

Jasmine Price, a buyer for Sahrbacher's, says the retailer is planning to double its selection of Flattery items over the next three months. "This idea of local touches is absolutely striking consumers in their sentimental spot right now," she said. "People are really responding to the idea of wearing items decorated with the same kinds of seashells as they found on the shore of Vastage Inlet as a child. ... It taps into nostalgia."

Isabella Levenay CEO Oscar Levenay sees no threat from Rhygsveldt and Flattery, however. "Sales go up, sales go down," he said. "We stick to pure lines and colours, and nevermind passing fads. Levenay is about looking timeless."

Still, Rhygsveldt has no plans to abandon his current vision anytime soon. Indeed, he has suggested his next step may be to use inspiration from local landmarks and architecture to suggest new directions for him. Does this mean there will be a hat shaped like the famous clock tower of Embertown? Rhygsveldt chuckled at the idea; "Probably not," he said.

Wave 3 Brings New Leaders, Redesign

Last Thursday saw the release of Wave 3 of the Academy's puzzle cards and the complete revamp of PerplexCity.com, the main site for introducing the people of Earth to our world. The Wave 3 release includes 62 cards, seven each of red to purple difficulty and ten each of black and silver. The cards are mainly available mixed together with cards from Waves 1 and 2, though a limited release of Wave 3-only packs has also been arranged. These packs will be produced at the end of the current print run, and so will not be available until the end of April. However, it is possible to pre-order the packs through a secret link that, so far, the Sentinel has been unable to discover.

The simultaneous redesign of PerplexCity.com was spearheaded by Mind Candy, the Academy's representatives on Earth. The changes to the site reportedly include the inclusion of a community page to help bring together the Cube-hunters on Earth, and an introduction to Perplex City. Mind Candy and the Academy hope that these changes will galvanise the people of Earth to join together in helping us locate the still-missing Receda Cube.

On the leaderboard, the release of Wave 3 has completely altered the ranking, with oliverkeers13 shooting to the top of the board with 8554 points and 178 solved cards, becoming the first player to be awarded a blue leitmark. Joining him at the top of the board in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th places respectively are: Mathematician, ManleyM, Ron53 and grizy. Nearly 22,000 players have now registered and over 267,000 cards have been solved, with 2,774 cards solved in the last day alone.

A number of players have made their reputations by being the first to solve a silver card in Wave 3. These solves include: Card #226, Instruction, solved by randomkevlar; Card #227, NAND, solved by angelbb; and Card #228, Primer, solved by omitchell.

Some players have also been the first to solve blacks in the new wave, a distinction only slightly less prestigious than being the first to solve a silver. These include: for Card #193, Three Thousand Words, solved by astro random; Card #195, Road Trip, solved by magicmancraig; Card #196, RGB, solved by RichardMcDowell; Card #197, Linguini Junction, solved by garath; Card #199, Three, solved by doublecross; Card #200, A Dream of Babel, solved by thalamus; and Card #201, Smoke and Mirrors, solved by alexdent.

Mind Candy has also issued several corrections to cards: Card #103, Sudoku, should read (1,E) Deadly Sins, (3,F) Atomic Number of Lithium, (8,I) Continents on Earth, (6,A) Groundhog Day; and both Cards #164, Weighs and Means, and #229, Ball Night contained mistakes within the main solution database which have now been rectified.

Futures for the week of April 10

The Eagle (March 11 - April 10)
You run a high risk of static shock this week. It might go better for you if you wore a different pair of shoes, but you should trust me when I say you can afford to take the electricity a whole lot more than the fashion hit.

The Spider (April 11 - May 10)
Fresh lemonade for you, duckie, it's your lucky beverage this week. Light and refreshing! Best accompanied with a nice savoury cheese-and-herbs pastry. This is the snack that will seal your good fortune for weeks to come.

The Wave (May 11 - June 10)
An embarrassing but highly itchy rash will leave you in a variety of comical predicaments in public situations in the days to come. Madame prescribes oatmeal baths and perhaps a healthy dose of hermitage.

The Archer (June 11 - July 10)
OK, honey, it's all done, you can drop the act now. Everybody knows you're not the sunshine baby you try to be, so go ahead and embrace your inner sarcastic wag. You may be surprised to find people like you better that way.

The Half-filled Jug (July 11 - August 10)
A burst of manic energy allows you to take off early nearly every day this week, but watch out that you aren't leaving a bad taste in the mouths of your colleagues. If your work seems too light, they can always arrange more, you know.

The Dragon (August 11 - September 10)
Funny how you've mellowed out with time. Some might even say you've gone soft. I'm not saying you need to go back to being an impulsive spitfire, though, I'm just commenting on how very complacent you've become.

The Three Balls (September 11 - October 10)
Looks like your personal gyroscope is a bit off this week, muffin. The good news: you won't do permanent harm to yourself or others. The bad: you're going to collect an impressive and extremely colourful array of scrapes and bruises.

The Dice (October 11 - November 10)
This is the week when that whole not-sleeping thing caches up with you. Do yourself a favour, pumpkin, and take Thursday off to sleep all day. You'll be back to your bad habits by the next day, of course, but at least you'll be rested for the weekend.

The Maze (November 11 - December 10)
That stormy relationship of yours finally blows itself out. I'm not sure if you can do better, button, but you can for sure do calmer, which just might be more important. You've got a long wait, though, since the stars won't be sending you even a bit of flirting for weeks yet.

The Apple-Thief (December 11 - January 10)
Passion you know not or anguish or punishment; feeling you lack, you are free -- free eternally, you have no homeland, for you there's no banishment.

The Hand (January 11 - February 10)
Please abandon your ambitious gardening plans for this spring. It won't go well, and who's going to think of all of those poor, innocent plants? What did they ever do to you to deserve such mistreatment? Have you no heart at all?

The Baby (February 11 - March 10)
Always up for a challenge? Think of five things you can do to make the city more fun and whimsical for everyone else this week, and then go do them. I know giving isn't so much your thing, but I promise just this once it'll be more than worth it.

And remember, one old friend is better than two new.

The Apple Thief quotation this week comes from the 1840 poem "Clouds", by Mikhail Yurevich Lermontov.

Quote:
Clouds in the skies above, heavenly wanderers,
Long strings of snowy pearls stretched over azure plains!
Exiles like I, you rush farther and farther on,
Leaving my dear North, go distances measureless.

What drives you southward? Is't envy that covertly
Prods you or malice whose arrows strike openly?
Destiny is it? A crime hanging over you?
Or friendship's honeyed but poisonous calumny?

No! O'er those barren wastes heedlessly journeying,
Passion you know not or anguish or punishment;
Feeling you lack, you are free - free eternally,
You have no homeland, for you there's no banishment.

Interestingly, although there are numerous blog posts on the 'story so far' pages on perplexcity.com, that the sentinel shouldnt really know about - violet's post about the wave 3 cards isn't on there - so they are kinda telling the truth about that. there is a link to quirkyacuity.com if they could be bothered to look, but hey...

it doesn't just seem to be a 'they havent got round to it yet' thing either, because violet's post entitled paternal affection, dated 2 days later, *is* on there, despite not being accredited or linked to her whatsoever.

hmmm...

rach =)

I'm looking forward to 'an impressive and extremely colourful array of scrapes and bruises' personally.

I think 'The Spider' is a better for you.

As long as I only suffer scrapes and bruises, and not loss of limbs or anything, I don't mind too much!

Freaky. I just gave up on my beloved boots and started wearing something else because the holes in the soles had grown beyond a joke...

Freaky . . . I was born November 4, and the fortune for The Dice is spot-on!

HAVE YOU BEEN BUGGING MY HOUSE, MIND CANDY?!

My Fortune seems to be unusually accurate as well, as a breakup with my girlfriend is almost certain to happen in the next week. Creepy...

What gardening plans? Setting up a meet for Cube Hunters in and around Belfast doesn't sound like gardening. Though no doubt Mum will be wanting me to help with the gardening this weekend.

Didn't notice that the 'Spider' is pretty much a personalised future Smile, thanks Chris.

So which part means "you will spend most of Wednesday's ward round horrendously hungover... by the way, that bike lock you lost last night is waiting for you here..."

*takes paracetamol and hopes that her blood alcamahol level will drop fairly soon.*
