[UPDATE] Video Competition Is Up

http://www.perplexcity.com/community/competitions/video/index.qbuild

LIGHTS! CAMERA! ETCETERA!

We know that you're a creative bunch, and we know that you like a challenge - and we also know you like fabulous prizes. Knowing all this, there was only one logical conclusion: we had to launch the inaugural Perplex City Video Competition.

Your task is to create a video illustrating the joys of Perplex City. It could be an advert. It could be a video diary. It could be a Ukrainian animation using potatoes and straw. All we ask is that it's 30-90 seconds long and suitable for family viewing.

Oh, and you've got four weeks to produce it, starting from Thursday 27 April 2006.

The competing videos will be uploaded to youtube.com, where the public vote will begin. The video with the most 'views' after two weeks will win the aforementioned fabulous prizes.

What's so fabulous? Well, the most popular video will earn an archive set of the latest versions of Waves 1, 2 & 3, hot off the press from our latest print run. On top of that, we'll throw in some signed, framed goodies from the Mind Candy vaults.

Runners-up (and entries Mind Candy thinks are terrific) will also be showered with trinkets, at Mind Candy's discretion. The top ten videos will be awarded bonus Perplex Points.
HOW IT WORKS

You'll need to complete your video by Thursday 25 May. We'll then publish instructions of exactly how to upload and tag your entry at youtube.com. You can upload your video after this date, but it may reduce your chances of winning.

Youtube.com accepts most digital video formats, including .AVI, .MOV and .MPG.

If you like, you can team up with other players. Whether you submit an entry on your own or with others, you'll need to include your perplexcity.com 'screen name(s)' within the video itself, probably in the credits at the end.

The videos will then be rated and watched by the public for two weeks. (Feel free to run your own promotional campaign to drum up interest.) The film with the most 'views' at 5pm BST on Thursday 8 June will be declared the ubervideo, king of all digital films, and winner of the top prize as described above.

The second- and third-highest rated videos (and entries Mind Candy thinks are terrific) will be eligible for runners-up prizes, at the discretion of Mind Candy.

The prize-winning videos will be hosted at perplexcity.com for the amusement of all.
COMING SOON...

Some examples of what we think might make good videos, plus some of our favourite ad campaigns from months and years past.
LEGAL BITS

To enter, you need to be a registered player at perplexcity.com. That means you also have to be over 13 years old. And you'd better make sure that your contact details for your account are accurate, in case we want to send you prizes. Your details are protected by the Mind Candy privacy policy.

By submitting your video to this competition, you are granting Mind Candy a royalty-free license to publish the video worldwide in any format, in perpetuity.

You need to make sure that you own the copyright on all the footage and music used in your video - so no stealing stuff. If you do use existing audio or video material, make sure it's free from copyright. Imitating other people's work is generally okay, though.

Mind Candy's decision on any matter relating to this competition is final.

If you have any questions, check out the youtube.com help pages or email videocompetitionSPLATperplexcity.com.

YAY! I'm totally excited about this one. However, the disclaimer info (while standard and expected) does make me wonder... Are there plans for eventual TV commercials? Smile

I think it just covers them for any eventually,
when they publish your movie on their site (or wherever)
you can't sue them for copyright infringment or charge them for usage.

Thanks for your email!

> * To what extent can Mind Candy copyrighted materials be featured in the
> videos?

Watch this space. We're getting a page of material ready for you all.

> * Can a person submit more than one entry?

Yes, but bear in mind that the grand prize is for the video receiving the most
views.

> * Is there an advantage to finishing early?

There is no advantage to having your video finished early - we'll release
instructions for all the videos to be uploaded to YouTube on the same day and
will count views during the same two week period for all entries.

Best regards,

The Perplex City Video Competition
Sounds like we will need to keep a close watch on the competition page. Smile
