Our office copy has arrived. It looks fabulous - the art is fantastic. I am an idiot for not putting it on pre-order. *Runs off to Amazon*

My local Borders had them in stock. Picked one up for the wife today. She's finished reading the book already. Not sure how it's going to work for puzzle interaction but.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

She said she read the entire book and the mystery was solved by the end. She wasn't sure if she was supposed to be going to the web pages and stuff as she read, or when she got to the end. The book itself wasn't very clear.

That means, if we pick it for our nieces for xmas for example, they may not even realize there is an interaction portion of the book.

I'm hoping that when she checks out some of the web pages and phones numbers and links a different mystery will unfold for her.

I got the book today! I don't quite know where to start, though. There's a load of "clues" shrink wrapped inside the front cover. Some lead to websites and some are phone numbers.

In the text, Cathy doodles "google this website" and points to a name in her journal entry. At first glance, it appears these are just to add to the reading experience. I'm hoping it will lead to more than just "interactive reading."

For example:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
A deep feeling of unease began to creep over me. "Emma, listen. A few days ago Victor took me to this crazy place called the Musee Mechanique, down on Pier 45. We stayed there until they closed up, and then Victor gave me a ride home.

(Doodle says to "google-->website (!!!)" and points Musee Mechanique.

googling places in the book

So, I wonder how many of these websites are real places (isn't 42 in the bay area) and how many will lead to stuff set up by Sean & Jordan as being "in game"?

Re: googling places in the book

Well, 42 is in the Bay Area, as is the museum mentioned above. It wouldn't suprise me if a majority of the places mentioned are real. Personally, I think that's amazingly neat.

OMG! PLACE PLACEMENT! Wink Sorry. Couldn't resist.

Egads... Usually they have been pretty good about getting pre-sale items out quickly.. but in this case you would have been better off buying it locally!

Ah, and they had it on the shelves nearby (in somewhere I could find it), I'd be all over it.

*sighs* Stoopid lack of Teleportation Delivery...

SPOILER WARNING! Don't read unless you've read the book!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

So I figured I may as well spoilerise this whole post....

The first thing I did upon getting the book home was to spread out the contents across my bed and have a look at each thing in turn. Having read none of the story, it was a little hard to make sense of them, but nonetheless I was able to appreciate the awesome writing and beatiful pictures.

The one thing, however, that I immediately noticed (and expected to be explained in the story) was the fact that the same name cropped up on three items - that of David Parkinson. He was the County Clerk who signed Victors birth certficiate, he was the doctor who signed Cathys fathers death certificate, and Victor also had an appointment to call him at 9.30am on January 28th.

This raises the question of who he was, and what relationship he had to Victor, to his condition, and to the research he was carrying out.

There is also another very curious thing on the death certificate for Michael Vickers - that the year of the death has been scrubbed out. You can just about make out in the "Date of Local Registry" field that it was 2000-and-something. Why on earth would this be? Is Cathy's dad not really dead? Is/was he involved in some way with the research Victor and Intrepid were doing? There's nothing in the story (at least that I picked up!) that would suggest they had any connection at all.

Also, the Eight Ancestors translate to the Eight Immortals, found in Taoism. Check out this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eight_Immortals - some of names are the same. Maybe the inclusion of the FdEx airway bill was to encourage people to find out more about this.

Anyhow, I really ought to get back to work. Have to pass the book and contents onto someone else to read over the weekend - gutted!

Following Fi's example, I'm spoilering this whole post too, although it has mostly to do with a curiosity found in the evidence packet.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
First off, I didn't even notice the whole David Parkinson thing, so I'll have to think on all of that for a while. But great job finding it!

Right now, I'm a bit curious about James & Johnny Chan's mother. If you read the newspaper article, dated 1906, it says this (emphasis mine):

"Many a Nevadan of a certain age first learned his ABCs in the makeshift mining camp schools run by Johnny's firey Scottish mother, "School-marm" Sarah Stewart. After her shocking and untimely death, Johnny, though barely twelve years old, shouldered the burden of raising his siblings."

However, if you read Frances' letter to James, dated 1907, it sounds a lot like their mother is still alive.

"Mother, of course, is devastated not to be asked to the service. With understandable prejudice, she blames this on the wiles of scheming Penelope.... With a mother's fondness...she worries this saloon singer will break your heart."

Does the mother share James' condition? Did Frances track her down after learning about James? Or was it just very sloppy reporting on the part of the newspaper?

----

One other small question: Thanks to the FedEx bill and a little Googling, I now know why Cathy was warned about not giving out her birthday. But how did the Old Man know to warn her? And does it make a difference now that Tsao knows?

edit: And it's not FedEx it's FDex - I really need to learn to read a little more closely because otherwise I miss the really cool stuff.

Aha!

Just got mine. Interesting stuff. I'm half tempted to leave the "evidence" in the sealed packet on the inside cover until I'm done reading.

143 pages? This should be a pleasant afternoon...Smile
