[SPEC] Miranda & Her Role in Cymbalisty's Death

I just made this thread so we don't have so many disparate comments among the many update threads today.

Discuss away! Who is Miranda really? Why and how did she kill Cymbalisty, if Kurt is correct? And yes, we all know she's been suspicious forever, so consider that one done Wink

and of course: where is she now??

well, I'll just start and say that I suspect she hasn't fled the city, and that she may, in fact, turn up Saturday at the Polygon Marathon.

Cymbalisty mysteriously acquired his new source of Ceretin the Tuesday before he died - when did the switch/mixing occur? What should our timeline be?

I believe Miranda was working for the 3rd power, and was specifically tasked with working at the library (to keep an eye on Violet) and to get close with Kurt (she probably couldn't believe her luck when they started dating) - as her superiors knew they were on to them. When she reported back about the Granier diary, she i believe she was ordered to do whatever it takes to stop Violet from reading the last page, and it is common knowledge that Cymbalisty was reliant on ceretin, a good way to make it look like suicide, esp if she could get her hands on some ceretin 6... After slipping him the new tablets, she goes away with Kurt to divert attention from her, I will bet anything that weekend away was her idea. More Red Herrings placed when she gave Violet a fake copy of the last page of the diary. And when she realised she was close to being rumbled today - she ran!

well thats my thoughts anyway

and damn i'm about to go out till 10pm so i'll miss all the excitement Confused

I'm still wondering about the other librarian Jason. I've always thought that both of them were really suspicious -- and now that Miranda has been discovered, I wonder what her possible co-conspirator might be up to right now. Do we have any way of keeping tabs on him? Maybe through Violet?

The Ceretin suicide angle really doesn't wash even under the most scant scrutiny - prior to the unreleased and experimental Ceretin 6 (the side-effects and dangers of which only became apparent to us through some fairly intensive - and underhand - investigation), there were 'failsafes' within the drug that made it impossible to get more than a headache from overdosing. This must be why the police pinned the blame on some sort of black market Ceretin, which presumably woudn't have this 'failsafe'. Cymbalisty had no reason to know about this, and even if he did, it's a relatively odd means of suicide - overdosing on exotic experimental cognitive function boosters when one presumes that there are far more readily available methods and chemicals to hand.

Presuming that this (ie taking the C6) was what killed Cymbalisty, then whoever administered it to him (or gave it to him without warning him of the danger?) must have known that it would prove fatal, ergo must have been privy to Cognivia's inside information regarding the lack of overdose protection (which I presume was far from being common knowledge, if in the public domain at all), and been privy to it before the testing so that the sample could be stolen by HG to either (a) synthesise it or (b) give it straight to Cymbalisty. This is of course presuming that there was no other way for a sample of the C6 to have been stolen or lost from Cognivia.

However, the suicide note on Cymbalisty's key proves that there must have been someone else present at his death, as even if he had been slipped the drug quietly, or taken it himself oblivious of the dangers, then he would obviously not have written a note prior to shuffling off this mortal coil.

So, that places at least one person with him on or just after his time of death, and Kurt has said in plain language that Miranda killed him. So, she seems to be the one who may have given him the C6, and her disappearance suggests that this was done intentionally. One presumes again that the lack of struggle or otherwise suspicious circumstance in Cymbalisty's flat points to it only being Miranda (who he knew) at the scene.

Why might she have knowingly poisoned him? Well, that seems fairly clear - to prevent him making an accurate translation of the last page of the Granier diary, and by making it look like suicide and providing what one also presumes is a fake page translation, covering her tracks. But why would she not want the page translated? What does it reveal about (a) Granier and his recently-conceived baby (someone's ancestor, perhaps?), (b) the nature of the war, (c) the Third Power and (d) the nature of the Cube itself? And why is any or all of that information so sensitive that it would require Cymbalisty being murdered in what is, frankly, a distinctly over-complicated manner?
