We have the following information...

The Picture is dated twice, accredited to both 1980 and 2003.

Alvar Hanso was last seen in 2002.

NO record whatsoever exists of him after 2002.

Therefore...
A) The photo is from 1980, and is the last available photo of Alvar, who died/vanished that year. Since then someone has been impersonating him. The impersonator mysteriously vanished in 2002. The Hanso Foundation has avoided Impersonator being photographed to avoid investigators realising he is not the real Alvar.

B) Alvar changed his name, and is actually Mittlewerk. He travelled under the name of Alvar Hanso, because it was on his passport. He hasn't left the country since 2002, and thus Alvar Hanso hasn't been 'seen' since 2002.

C) Alvar never existed, and is the creation of the Dharma group as a figurehead. They were unable to produce a meaningful reason and cover-up for his existance, and 'retired' the character. The person playing the part of Alvar retired in 2002, disappearing into Madrid to avoid being traced.

D) Alvar experimented on himself in 1980. The photograph is the last available so that they can cover-up the fact he hasn't aged since then. If he was providing weapons in world war two (lets say he was 20 at the time) he would be 106 this year, and most likely dead...

I suppose that last comment might prove interesting to people that overlooked the fact he was in world war two, and still active.. TODAY, according to the website.

Obes. Twisted Evil

or;

E) Joop is really Alvar Laughing

But just to make a brief comment: it seems more than a coincidence that the episode with the orientation video was shown in the UK a day after the clue about the Alvar photograph was mentioned.

Saw the advert again, too Very Happy

I'd say he's probably been topped by Mittelwork or something Very Happy

[trout]If you on the page for the Electromagnetic Research Initiative, there's a photo of Arora Borealus from October 28, 2001...the Alvar Hanso photo on the site is also dated October 28, but 2003...coincidence?[/trout]

Edited...god, i'd hate to reference something that pertains to this thread/idea that appeares in another thread.

...most likely dead, unless he had access to life extension technology. Which is, after all, what his Foundation deals in. Average orangutan life expectancy is 35 years in the wild. If Joop's tripled that, what would applying the same techniques to a human subject do?

Theoretically, Alvar Hanso could live to be 240 or more. He's probably dead of unnatural causes, IMO-- but if not, living some insane amount of years wouldn't be out of the question, given the technology level the Foundation seems to possess.

Edited to add: Wait a sec. Assuming current game date is sometime after the Oceanic 815 crash, that means Joop was born in 1901 at the latest, and would've been dead under normal circumstances by 1936. Alvar and the boys have been working on this life-extension thing since before World War II, if that's the case, and had something that worked prior to 1936. The 1930s were not exactly a hotbed of genetic engineering advances in our world, at least. What the heck?

My bad, doing math at 11pm at night is not good, I took the 20 off of 1940 twice for some reason.

Anyway, if he was between 20-35 during WWII, (lets pick, 1943 as a year), then he'd be born between...

1908 - 1923

Which would make him between the ages of 83 - 98 this year. Now, it's possible he's still alive and active and benefitting from the Life Extension Project.. but keeping the Joop fact in mind too...

It's likely that Alvar is older than 98... possibly.

RANDOM BRAIN TURD
Guest

Alvar is John Lockes dad

i know this might be totally random, already discussed or you just dont care or possibly completely stupid.

But i did notice that johns dad in the flash backs (episode 3 - series 2) looks a bit like the grainy picture of alvar hanso also i dont think his name is ever mentioned, might be a possible reason for being "missing" (because he was ill with kidney/having surgery) and the place john pulls up at looks pretty posh/rich which i guess alvar hanso is.

however theres a few problems with this idea as that wouldnt explain the old picture and i dont no for sure whether it fits into the time line as i dont know how old the flash backs are

P.S this might be aload of crap but hey thought i would just say it Razz

Or you could go down the whole 'Life Extension Project' as an offshoot from the nazi Arian race ideal. Which could mean Dr. Mittlewerk could've been around during the war and assumed the identity of a Danish munitions manufacturer when the fall of the German reich took place to avoid any number of war crimes or human rights atrocities.

That'd make "Mittlewerk" a really really old guy, who looked much much younger than he really is, and he would have to somehow orchestrate some sort of charade periodically to replace the company boss, Alver (himself), with a younger identity (Himself) to carry on running his enterprises/experiments.

We could be looking for an even older war-time identity.

Actually, strike all this, im rambling off into supposition and speculation that is probably rubbish.

Sorry...with 892 different interconnecting threads, it's next to impossible to keep track of them all, keep them seperate, and never refer to one another...unless of course you don't have anything better to do.

That's what the Search button is for. We all know that it is difficult to keep track of everything that's going on. But if we don't take the time to make sure what we are posting is new, the boards will be clogged with repeat information.

My rule of thumb is: If it seems really obvious, assume that someone else has already posted it until you can verify that it hasn't.

Going along with hanso being involved in world war 2, for those that follow the show you may have noticed in the past season MC Gainey's character using a german luger pistol and also one of the characters (i forget who) finds a pocket knife which is reported to have been used during world war 2 also. Could the island experiment possibly have been going on since then I wonder.

You know, I was thinking along those lines myself Very Happy Very Happy Or else why would they have specifically mentioned the time the weapons were from?

(info from Season 2, episode 7)
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
This was Ana Lucia; IIRC, she found the knife on the body of one of the Others who seiged the Tailies' camp during the first couple of weeks

Sincere apologies for the non-spoilerage - I was under the impression that this had already aired everywhere? Could someone kindly tell us which is the most recently aired episode in the UK?

Please Please PLEASE ..

For future reference, can you put spoilers in the spoiler tags?

People may not want to see character names, weapons, and the storylines concerning the tail-end of the plane until they can see it on the TV.
