[UPDATE] Path of Least Time - 6th May 2006

Kurt's okay, everyone Very Happy

Concussed

It's going to have to be a short post today, I'm afraid. I'm sitting in the Observation ward of Phuah Hospital, with an incredible headache and burns over my back. My ankle is badly sprained, and I'm pretty certain that this is the worst 48 hours I've ever lived through.

I don't remember much about what happened yesterday. I recall heading to Miranda's apartment to look for clues - and that's about it. Apparently I was concussed when her apartment block exploded, and I was found lying on the ground outside. The Sentinel's saying that the explosion was caused by a gas leak, but I don't believe in coincidences any more - it happened because I was there. It seems like the only reason I got out alive is because my key detected the rising gas levels and alerted me.

There are dozens of ways Miranda could've rigged the explosion; maybe she had a movement sensor, or a switch linked to the door, or a heat sensor. I doubt we'll ever find out though, what with the building being a pile of rubble now. When Violet told me that at least three people died and a family are in intensive care, I could only laugh - I don't think anything Miranda does now could surprise me.

Violet's just left the ward now. She came to the hospital as soon as she heard I'd been in the explosion, and luckily spotted the note I'd retrieved from the apartment. Like I said, I can't remember how I found it or why I realised it was important, but with your help, she figured out it was Miranda's drop box and managed to get to it first.

The stuff that was in the drop box - another key, first aid kit, clothes, lots of money, etc - would've been valuable to her and we must have slowed her down by taking it. But not enough. When I woke up an hour ago, I had a message waiting for me on my key, saying that Miranda had been reported to Missing Persons by a boat hire company out in Portside Docks. She hired out a small pleasure cruiser early this morning, and it was only after she left that they recognised her from police reports.

Luckily the cruiser is perfectly visible from the air and the Coast Guard are heading out to pick her up. It'll take a little while, but she isn't going anywhere. I'm looking forward to talking to her again...

I thought Kurt was a goner this time. He's been far too easy to contact and does everything we want too readily. I though MC would make it harder by taking him out of action and making us find a new gopher. Maybe they still will by keeping him in hospital for a time but, though I'm no doctor, i would have thought that a sprained ankle was hardly that debilitating.

What would we do without Kurt - imagine trying to get Tippy to do something for us. Now Von might be a better bet...

Does anyone think any of the CRT will buy it, or will they always miraculously survive all that the 3P throw at them?

i know, but we need him to, we want to find out her motives, who is she working for, is she 3p or is she part of the group that beat V etc to the cube.

As Kurt and Violet are the only people who know about her involvement with Cymbalisty's death, they are the only people that can get answers from her - the police just think she's a missing person.

#it's harsh that Anna doesn't know. We started all this so we could help her find out the truth behind her friend's death, and now we know, she hasn't been told, but Violet and Kurt know. Poor Anna. (Though I can see that if she knew she would go to the police, and Kurt would go to jail... Confused)

Well, he was an unwitting accessory; and considering the lengths went into her capture, I suppose a plea bargain would give him a drastically short sentence, and parole would be very easy to get. Anything to be sure that she's under lock and key.

They wouldn't be at all happy Kurt went all "vigilante justice" on the department, and they'd still hit him hard, but he never really committed a violent crime, so it's really all up in the air.

Up to Kurt, really.

In my opinion I don't think Kurt will get the chance to talk to miranda... Whoever it is who has hired her or is above her will want her dead ASAP before she can get caught and tell anyone any information...

Or maybe thats me being a bit morbid Wink

Maybe she'll sail into the (until now unmentioned) Perplex Triangle, and it'll make her and the boat suddenly disappear Laughing

I would certainly be surprised if the 3P let her be captured that easily. Looking at how easily they can abstract people here on Earth I am betting they would find it evern easier in PXC

Sorry, but providing an unwitting alibi for someone isn't the most illegal thing ever. Kurt's not exactly an accessory so much as someone else who was fooled by her. They don't throw you in jail for being a victim. Also, "I want to talk to miranda again" isn't exactly in the friendly spirit.

*nods* Exactly. And even his attempts to find her afterwards, should they find out about them, could simply be put down to 'where has my girlfriend go, and why has she been lying to me' dramatics.

I agree Miranda won't survive long -- or she simply won't be accessible to us.

As for losing our gopher... well, there's other methods of doing that than dying. The next focus of the story may take him out of the picture, or he may, once he's a better, simply not want to help out any more because of the danger/guilt over Miranda-related happenings.

heh, don't assume anything.

for instance, I emailed Anna as soon as Kurt posted his first suspicious message about Miranda (and asking her not to get the police involved, but perhaps her husband could help again), and I emailed her again yesterday telling her that I thought Kurt may have been in the exploded building, possibly with Violet, and that she should find out if everyone's okay.

So, yeah. We don't know who knows what here, if anything.

Oh, and I also emailed Scarlett on the off chance that she had seen Miranda or a picture/file of her before in Viendenbourg. Though I didn't say why.

I think the first thing not to assume is that she's actually on that boat... She's smart and resourceful, and clearly has contingency plans in place, if not the backing of an entire organisation of some sort.

My bets are (and I would actually go so far as to put some real Lecks on this) that she was never on that cruise, and has sold us all a dummy and vanished again while everyone thinks she's in the bag...

She wasn't on the boat...

She wasn't in the boat. Coast Guard rendezvoused with the cruiser earlier today, and there was no-one inside; she'd set it on automatic pilot. Violet was here when the news came in, and I think even she was surprised by the stream of swearing that I made. I'm having a hard time dealing with the fact that Miranda is constantly outsmarting me. I feel terrible about lying to everyone, and while I appreciate your support, I don't deserve it.

They're treating my burns here in the hospital, but they say should be able to go home next week. There was some talk about arranging a psychologist to visit me in case I get any post-traumatic stress, but I told them to get lost - I'm too busy for that. Obviously I still have my key, and I've been working hard on creating a new system for tracking Miranda down. The notifications I get from Missing Persons are useful, but they're clearly not going to be enough to pinpoint her location, especially given that she'll be on the lookout. To find her, I'm going to have to do something much trickier - I'm going to have to do a global search for her. Not in the physical sense, but as in 'all available information sources'.

The global search is going to look everywhere for patterns that match Miranda; it'll look at key transactions, passenger lists, city noise-monitoring microphones, surveillance cameras in public places. When it finds them, it'll plot their location as accurately as it can. All of this is going to require a huge amount of computing power, and because I don't want to draw too much attention to what I'm doing, I'm going to just use my own resources. Consequently, it won't return results very often and they won't all be that useful, because she won't be using her name and she's probably changed her appearance.

I can't say that this will succeed, but I need to be doing something. Everything seems to be completely out of control, and I've got to get a grip on it. I can't handle much more of this.

Not surprisingly it wasn't as easy as her being on the boat - I think Kurt is underestimating Miranda....!
